For those of you in UK/Europe -- I have to think that Dreamhack/IEM would have to be loads of fun too. Or HomeStory Cup. If I could arrange a reason to travel for work to Germany near a Homestory Cup, I'd just move into the Irish Bar there. Of course, it'd be hard to bring my son (but you never know when one might find a way). jEcho -- I'm glad the cheese wasn't off-putting. Even if he'd managed to steal game 1, we knew there was very little chance of getting past a player of your caliber. We watched your progress the rest of the way and were rooting for you to get deep in the tourney. You did well and hope to see you do even better next one. As for getting parents and older people in general involved, it's not exactly easy, but think about the good reputation Chess has as a game. There is really not much reason at all that you'd prefer your kids playing Chess to Starcraft. They both teach you to compete, to focus, to study. Chess requires longer sustained attention, but Starcraft requires speed and multi-tasking. Maybe next time I can set aside a few minutes to blog, I'll write up some of the brain training issues that have been in recent research and some of the obvious pros and cons of videogames compared to sports and other extracurriculars. I think I'm pretty lucky that my son and I share this interest -- although as a heads up to the other parents out there, it's really disconcerting when they're suddenly *way* better than you (that'll make you feel old, trust me). But I do periodically have to reassure my wife about it, so I'm pretty familiar with the standard non-gamer concerns, too.

Thanks for the story! Love seeing some pros commenting too. Showing that they're just as human as you and me. Keep on fighting, both you and your son and all the players. And btw, players, if you're coming to Dreamhack, expect some autograph-signing. :3
