Pro gamers, like you, playing with passion are one way the 'stigma' associated with gaming changes. I try to do my own small part by talking to the other parents to see who else games -- and I'll tell you it's already shifting. I run into lots of parents who want to tell me about their gaming. Even though it's usually things like Plants vs Zombies, if they like playing anything, they are very curious when I tell them about esports and Starcraft. I'm sure the pro gamers realize this, but this is a major reason why issues of language and really bad manner are a big deal. You can argue all day about how bad a specific word or epithet is, but if that kind of language is being thrown around, you are going to have real trouble getting parents to get involved with their kids' gaming. But it would be easy for anybody to be a supportive parent at MLG, I think. The fans and players are excited, enthusiastic but also polite -- and there is a lot of camaraderie. Thank you for this amazing blog post and enlightening point of view of eSports. I never thought about the bm/language issue from the perspective of adults who aren't familiar with competitive gaming but are interested like parents other than yourself. | ||
