I remember reading a thread where someone found a book they were searching for: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=315614
I have a similar problem where I'm searching for a book on military history. I remember reading this book about 15(!) years ago in my local library. One day, the book just went missing! I can't remember the author or the title, but I do have some sketchy details about it:
- I think the book was focused on commanders, with each chapter a very detailed account of a particular battle that the commander was famous for. I'm also quite sure that it was only 1 battle per commander.
- It was a big book, with each page A4 size. This link: http://www.eastonpressbooks.com/leather/product.asp?code=1210 looks fairly close but I'm quite sure the cover was different (but it could be a different cover but same book). If you have/read the book in the link, who is the author? I'm also quite sure that this book by Anthony Livesey is not what I'm searching for: http://www.amazon.com/Great-commanders-battles-Anthony-Livesey/dp/0025734105 (I think I've read this already).
- There is a book by Grant, which I've checked out and it's not it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Commanders-R-G-Grant/dp/140533696X
- I remember Napolean was there, and his was the Battle of Austerlitz. Very sure about this.
- I remember there was a WWII (or maybe WWI) battle, and it was described as being "cannae-like". Quite sure about this.
- I think Federick the Great was there and the battle was Leuthen, but I could be confused about that one.
- I think Washington was there but this one I'm not sure.
- I think Robert Lee & Jackson was there and it was the Battle of Chancellorsville, but this I'm not sure.
Anyone with any clues? Have you read something like what I've described before? I've been searching this for many many years!!

I think this might possibly be what you are looking for.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-War-Andrew-Roberts/dp/1847245161/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1331267027&sr=1-1
Here is the cover of the amazon.com verison
I have a similar book titled "The Art of War Great Commanders of the Modern World 17th-20th Centuries" edited by Andrew Roberts. I believe these two are the same books, just different editions.
My book (not the amazon one since I'm not sure about that) has Frederick The Great, Napolean, Lee, Jackson, Patton, MacArthur, and many others. So that MIGHT be what you are looking for.

Sounds like every book about military history ever written. Can you be more specific? All books on military history have the same formula you just described (this coming from a history major).

Yeah, wish I can be more specific - but it was 15 years ago and everything is very sketchy...

It's not the first book since the one I'm looking for covers commanders throughout history.
I have the latter book already
Quite a good read - however, for me personally, I prefer even more detailed accounts of the battle - for instance, if it was reduced to about 30 battles but with a corresponding increase in detail, I would've been much more pleased.
I'm currently reading something similar - can't remember the title/author since it's at home, and so far it's been a great read - unfortunately, it too isn't the book I'm after.
