So while loitering at my buddy's house the other day the subject of turned to irrational fears... only to find that what gives me the chills is completely different from his.
See, I'm a wuss and a coward when it comes to the......more gruesome parts of dead animals. Gimme a live dog and I'll pet him. Give me a dead dog and I'd do anything up and including drinking a glass of fish oil to avoid handling him. Same goes for rodents, birds, cats, etc. Basically anything with fur, feathers, claws or teeth I can't stand to handle when dead...bonus terror if they're also in any way mutilated or decayed. brrr.
Now, the first thing my friend thinks when he sees a dead animal is whether he could cook and eat it...However he has gets really really nervous around (living) bugs. Case in point: we did a though experiment in which we imagined ourselves locked in a room with a dead decaying corpse that's infested with maggots. If we could take one of the two out of the room, which would it be?
I'd definitely remove the corpse. Then I'd just squish the maggots and I wouldn't even be that bad off. He claims he'd rather stay in the room WITH a FUCKING CORPSE than have a load of maggots left in the room with him. He claims the squirming and crawling of bugs incites terror in him in large numbers.
Both of us are certain that our particular phobia is in fact the "natural" irrational fear, and the other guy's just weird. So we made a bet: $10 to the guy who has the more common phobia.
So, I ask you dear TeamLiquiders:
You sit down a the dinner table and I set a large covered serving platter in front of you. I then lift the cover to your great dismay. Which case would make YOU jump up and and leave the room in shivers? (you don't have to consume it)
Poll: Which one?A bowl of squirming crawling cockroaches (47) 71% I don't feel too bothered by either one (13) 20% A large roasted pig's head, grinning at you (6) 9% 66 total votes Your vote: Which one? (Vote): A large roasted pig's head, grinning at you (Vote): A bowl of squirming crawling cockroaches (Vote): I don't feel too bothered by either one

His is by far more common.

I'd remove the cockroaches no doubt, and I think most people will agree. I'm fine with dead animals.
+ Show Spoiler +I go on 4chan once in a while (rarely!) because I'm stupid, and I'm largely fine with gore although I definitely don't click on it. However there was this gif of a dog getting bashed to death with a shovel and it creeped me out so much. I just had to tell somebody =(

Cockroaches > Pig Head > Maggots for me.
Cockroaches are just TOO yuk.
|
I draw the line at the world's largest centipede. The damn thing is about as long as my arm.
|
I don't get how the roasted pig's head would scare you... that isn't really unusual food.
I'm guessing you're fine with scales though, since you didn't mention them in the OP. So, given that, you'd be fine if they opened it up and there were fish there?
|
What about those who are afraid of all of it? I'm creeped out by most 'icky' things.
My option would be both but that doesn't exist.
|
This poll is completely biased.
|
I feel like I see giant roasted pork heads every day whenever I walk into Chinatown ...
|
I didn't see the option for possums, live or dead.
|
any insect that can crawl over the same insect and squirm crosses my line x.x
|
Looks all edible to me. Some people just can't be pleased.

I've never seen a cockroach (thanks god) But as long as i have a jacket i just curl my self up into a ball and ignore the crawlers as long as they don't bite or pinch i aint got no problem.
|
maggots would have to gtfo I cant stand all these tiny little bugs. I can live with some dead animal
|
What a strange thread.
I would probably remove the corpse. Depending on how long I'm in the room for, it could decay a lot. Maggots smell better than dead people.
|
Remove the corpse. When you understand an insect and any irrational associated fears that come with it, you'll get over it when you're around them for a while.

Well, the examples are kinda weird, I find creepy crawlies more disgusting than corpses for sure, but obviously a decaying corpse is also disgusting. You seem to be mostly bothered by the fact that its just dead regardless of decomposition. (although part of why I find decomposition disgusting is the inevitable creepy crawlies).
If i had to choose between corpse or maggots, I'd choose the corpse unless it was going to decay/ spread disease/ smell, in which case id choose maggots but only because my l know the maggots pose less of a threat. That doesn't mean I don't find them less repulsive though.
For the example to vote on though it's weird caus you say it's a roasted pigs head, that's not even like decaying corpse / gross it's pretty much food, I wouldn't eat it but it wouldn't bother me. Bowl of live coackroaches though I'd probably run out of the room. I don't mind it when the bugs are big or slow like mass tarantulas or fighting beetles wouldn't bother me, but mass small quick insects creep me out. How do you eat meat if you find flesh of dead stuff gross? Or are you a vegetarian? Looks like you owe your friend 10 bucks ftw .
|
i voted for the cockroaches....BUT huge caveat: i'm chinese, and we tend to eat weird stuff anyways. pigs head? meh, if it's roasted nicely i'll eat that too.
edit: if it weren't roasted though, but bloody and dripping and stinky, then i might reconsider...but a roasted head is, well, food
