I'm a journalism student from Illinois State University who started playing Starcraft 2 over the summer, and for some reason, unlike any other game, I just never stopped. I've been slowly following the SC2 scene since then, beginning with Day[9]'s videos to become better before watching streams and tournaments. Now I'm reading Wellplayed.tv, ESFi World, and CSN in addition to watching State of the Game and other news programs and podcasts. After about 6 months of playing and watching, I realized I could use my degree to do something in the ever-growing e-sports and SC2 community.
So, here's the deal. As a journalism major and reporter for my school's news paper, The Daily Vidette, I intend to use my knowledge of AP and my writing skill to run a blog that is essentially an AP news wire for Starcraft 2 e-sports. I give full rights for people to reuse and republish these stories on their own websites as long as I am given credit because I would like to use this blog as a means of creating a portfolio of stories after I graduate this coming December (Graduation sadly means termination at the Daily Vidette). Feel free to use them as stepping stones to better articles as well. Treat it like the AP wire.
I normally do news work talking to city officials and professors on campus, so this will be a different challenge for me as I haven't done sports as much. You can check out some of my work at the Daily Vidette by searching my last name. My hope is to at one point be able to interview the players, coaches and casters about their matches and attribute their quotes in the articles as a reporter would. Additionally, as I'm writing my articles, please leave constructive feedback as the most important part of any newspaper, blog, etc. is the audience, and I want to cater to you!
In any case, MLG Providence is this weekend, and although I'm not going to the event, I plan on doing some reporting from home to start producing some articles. I'll likely be writing some previews in addition to match recaps and out-comes. If any pros or coaches are interested in my press coverage please pm me so I can contact you to make these stories better. This blog will most definitely contain spoilers in content and title as it is necessary for the news cycle to be open and as immediate as possible.
I'm only one man who has two jobs, so don't expect the world from me just yet because of time constraints. Enjoy Providence and IPL Qualifiers this weekend. I'll do my best to cover as much of them as possible.
<3 you all
