This band is amazing. They recently released their second album, which prompted me to write this blog. Some background info: the band consists of three members in Tosin Abasi (lead guitar), Javier Reyes (rhythm guitar), and Navene Koperweis (drums). Abasi puts together most of the music, actually the record company originally wanted him to do a completely solo album. The man is a musical genius in my opinion, his arrangements are so beautiful and heavy.
Their music is purely instrumental, which is a huge plus in my opinion, because the complexity of the music would be utterly diminished if someone tried to sing over it. I wish there were more metal bands that focused heavily on melody and fired the singer, because this combination is just perfect.
Now, on to the songs. I have to tell you right now to BUY THESE ALBUMS if you like them, because they are totally worth it and if you're going to buy music it might as well be from an up-and-coming band. But if you don't want to buy it, every song they've made is on youtube, and they're all worth listening to at least once.
First album was self titled, released in 2009, and I spent weeks listening to it over and over again while writing science papers for my senior year of college. Frankly, listening to this album these days reminds me of computational fluid dynamics. But it's still soooo good.
Tempting Time - Song 1 Album 1, generally the first song people hear.

CAFO - their single from this album. They have a sick music video for it, but there's an HD video for better sound quality that I'll link instead.

On Impulse - Somewhat lighter than those two, but still amazingly complex. These songs are really difficult to describe, but this song definitely hints at how the sound will evolve on the next album.

Inamorata - The last song I'll link from this album is probably my favorite. Go listen to the rest of the album after this, again it's all on youtube and it will melt your face.

Second album is called Weightless and it was released just two weeks ago! Overall it's not as heavy as AAL was, which disappointed me somewhat at first, but after listening to it a half dozen times I'm starting to like it even more than the first album. Also, I'm going to link every song from it, because I'm convinced if you hear them all you'll realize that you have to buy the album just for the better sound quality.

Somnarium - This one really fucking stands out to me. Amazing.

Earth Deptarture - Probably the heaviest song on the album and another mind blowing success.

Isolated Incidents - This song was released on youtube officially in September, and for fans it was the first song we heard from this album.

Do Not Go Gently - The joke on youtube is "Go Djently".

New Eden - I wish this song was three minutes longer.

Cylindrical Sea

Espera - This specifically sets the tone for the next song, watch in sequence on youtube.

To Lead You to An Overwhelming Question - LOVE the breakdown at 2:20. Climax of the album perhaps? Note: the uploader failed and there's a minute of silence at the end of this video that shouldn't be there.

Weightless - Title track that, of course, lives up to and surpasses its name.

David - I hope everyone listened to all the songs and made it to this one, but you just scrolled down to the end, definitely listen to this. It's unlike any of the previous songs and it's just incredible... I don't think I've ever heard a more emotional instrumental song.

Well I hope you liked it. This music is the shit, no doubt about it. I'll leave off with what to look for in the future.
Abasi and Reyes recently formed a "supergroup" band with Suicidal Tendancies drummer Eric Moore and ex-The Mars Volta wind instrumentalist Adrian Terrazas called T.R.A.M. (first initial of each member's last name). They haven't released anything yet officially but there is an unmastered version of the song Endeavor on youtube, along with a number of live performances. I can't wait for them to release their music, it's going to be epic.
Here's Endeavor by T.R.A.M. (unfinished)
