I was quite good too. I beat the campaign countless times, and probably played every decent UMS out there. I can assure you that nobody can amass as many kills as I do in Sunken Defense 2006. And I don't use that newbie carrier secret hack, either! My micro in bound games was unmatchable as well. Go ahead and mess with the latency, i'm invincible son! Melee games though? Naaahh. Such an outdated mode. Nobody uses it anymore. Why would I want to use a 6 dmg marine when I can get one that deals a million in DBZ All Saga? And there's no point in waiting for units to pop, Zergling Blood provides them to me right away.
On July 28th, I bought SC2 with great hopes. A full new campaign to beat, and millions of shiny customs! Can't wait to pwn those noobs at Spine Crawler Defense 2010!
I took me about two weeks to beat the campaign on brutal. I also messed around with the custom games, but I was disappointed with them. They did not feel as ''customy'' as the broodwar ones. The charm was not there... One thing leading to another, I ended up wondering about 1v1, and playing my five placement matches. Platinum league, baby!
Then after a week, down to gold (shouldn't have switched to zerg after the placement!)
That's when it kicked in. The drive to melee. I wanted my shiny eagle back, damn it! I searched for ways to improve my zerg play, and inevitably found TL. After some hardcore browsing, my perception of the starcraft games got kicked in the face. I rapidly learned about the competitive scene, the koreans, the bonjwas, the foreigners, IdrA rage...
Where the hell was I this whole time? How did I miss all of this!?
So it is with a bit of sadness and a lot of nostalgia that I reinstalled BW. After the 13 seconds installation, my hands mechanically logged me on the multiplayer, but something was different. I was lucky enough to find a 1:1 with obs on Fighting Spirit in the 6 available hosted games, so I joined in. The game started and that's when I realised I was a complete stranger to this game that I thought I knew inside and out. In fact, I did not even know the most basic things about it.
Oh, hey! A forge FE! They do that in SC2 too!
Man, those hydras are strong. What can the toss even do to th- OUCH! Storm is sooo good!
It is indeed weird to be able to get this ''new'' feeling (you know, that feeling when you first play a game?) a second time with Broodwar. And I can't say I dislike it at all.
Well, time to head back to US East and get destroyed by newbies!
