havnt seen a thread about this contest yet, i think its a pretty big deal for the modding scene

The Blizzard community has a long history of creating amazing games using our engines and tools. StarCraft II is no exception, and we’re constantly blown away by the quality of games that players create.
Now that the Arcade is free, we think this is a great time to encourage the creation of awesome games. We’re sending out the call: wow us with the most amazing Arcade games ever made using the StarCraft II Map Editor and Art Tools, and we’ll award over fifteen thousand dollars and other amazing perks to the winning entries. If you’ve always wanted to create your own game, this contest is for you!
The contest duration will be four months, ending on May 31, 2014. After a thorough review, we’ll pick the semi-finalists from the pool of entries and ask the community to help us decide on the winners. That’s right, the players themselves will narrow it down to the final five from which we will select first, second, and third place winners.

Edit

Additional prizes have been announced

+ Show Spoiler +

When we first announced the Rock the Cabinet contest, we knew we’d get some amazing submissions, but we were not prepared. We're overwhelmed by the diversity and quality of the games we're seeing during our Arcade Night play-tests. As we’ve been sharing these entries around the office the excitement surrounding the contest has multiplied. Some of our creative teams have been so impressed they’ve offered their time to create new art and sound assets.

In addition to the official prizes, we are thrilled to announce these new Rock on! Bonus Arcade Assets:

Grand Prize

Art created by the StarCraft II art team including:
A custom loading screen
A unique game icon for the Arcade browse screen
A custom made portrait players will be able to unlock
Audio created by the Blizzard sound team including:
An original theme song
An ambient track designed for your game
Second & Third Place

Art created by the StarCraft II art team including:
A unique game icon for the Arcade browse screen
A custom made portrait players will be able to unlock
An ambient track designed for your game and composed by our Sound Department
Fourth & Fifth Place

A unique game icon for the Arcade browse screen

Developers take heed -- these new assets are awaiting you at the finish line, so push hard! Polish up those games and deliver the best product you can. You have until May 31, 2014 to get your submission in. You can view the official rules here: http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/community/contests/sc2-arcade/rules.html

Good luck!

Or you could just learn AS3 or even JS with something like Phaser, take your gameplay idea to the web + mobile free market and make pretty much guaranteed 7k (= 1st prize) for those 4 months (including learning from scratch).

Lol that's ridiculous. If they want to boost the modding community of the game they should update their tutorials and creat new ones. When you don't know anything about mapping the Sc2 map editor is scarier than counter strike's source SDK...

Blizzard should spend their money on tutorials and detailed descriptions of every element of the World Edit.

Shouldn't we be rather happy that they are actually throwing money at the modding community? I mean originally they didn't even want to let community maps on ladder and there was no arcade to begin with. Plus we never saw that "map market" they talked about at some blizzcon and everything made in sc2 belongs to blizzard so imho this is pretty cool of them to do given all the shit we currently have to take from them. I doubt there will be many completely new games as I feel like 4 months is fairly little time to create something entirely new.

Or people could stop doing game-related things and get a full-time job, maybe two, and make more than 7k (= 1st prize) for those for months, right?

I guess this is why gameheart released a ctf game today?
Game is looking great.

The arcade still needs a lot of improvement though, there is almost no way for the new games to be successful because it's too hard to build a playerbase

It's a shame I never see more than 2 open games whenever I check the Arcade on SEA. And even when I try to join them the lobby has moved on.

Blizzard really pushing the Arcade i like this move WIth the influx of people downloading Battle.net in order to play hearthstone i hope we will see SC2 player number rise a little.

There is huge difference between developing a web/mobile game and a mod for SC2...

Yeah! That sounds just great! I'll just enjoy my full time job for two more months so I can afford it - wait, am I losing the point of the argumentation?
