A new Color Blind Mode has been added and can be enabled in the Gameplay options menu. When enabled, the following changes take effect: - Alternate colors are used to show the build grid when “Display Build Grid” is enabled.
- Alternate colors are used to designate player colors when playing in teams.
- Placement grid textures indicating unbuildable locations have been updated to display an “X” rather than changing from green to red.
- Minimap terrain is darkened to provide more visual contrast between units and terrain.
Well, I think, streamers and players should start use this mode which was introduced in latest patch 2.0.10. What the differences are? On the screenshot you can clearly see new colors in team games - blue/cyan/orange instead old green/yellow/red, also new building grid and darker minimap. Also this mode was the Blizzard answer to Stronger Team Color mod. As you may notice, Blue versus Orange feels more contrast than Green versus Red, in some cases. So yes, this may be really a good answer from Blizzard to STC mod. Lets use it!
I'm not a color-blind player, but I think, blue versus orange feels more contrast and readable than green vs red on some maps, including night ones.
In short word, instead green and red colors you now may have blue and orange ones! Plus new and better building grid. How to turn it on * click to enlarge *
- instead green/yellow/red scheme you will have blue/cyan/orange color scheme. Player colors scheme still can be toggled to player's color (i.e. Red vs Blue in 1v1 Ladder). Aesthetically Blue Terrans and Blue Protosses looking a bit better, than green ones. Also blue Zergs are nice too and feel more fresh than green Swarm.
- circle around selected units/buildings now matches player's color. It means that circles now are same color as player's color.
- A bit darker minimap, means that it's easier to spot drops, and other targets. Well, black minimap is still the best variant for spotting small red/orange squares on big maps.
- Brighter minerals/neutral objects on the minimap. Instead light-blue they are white now.
- X'es in unbuildable blocks. But the building will be always red. Also buildable area now is bright-white, when unbuildable area is covered by black blocks

In the 1v1 ladder you may have only 3 colors - blue (enemy red), red (enemy blue), green (enemy red). In all cases your army is green on the minimap.

I think, always blue Protoss and always blue Terran looks a lot more cool, than always green. Blue Terrans are Raynor's Raiders from campaign, and Protoss blue color was always their default color. Just compare such a small but nice difference. Zergs looks better in green mode just because it's their second color after purple, even in the campaign

I doubt caster streamers will do this, because the placement overlay doesn't matter, team colours don't matter. The only thing it would impact is the minimap, which they hardly look at anyway.

As a colorblind person who's been struggling with blizzard's red/green colorscheme for a long time now. I can say they did extremely well with their colorblind mode. I was very scared at first that they'd mess this up but it seems they nailed it and used the perfect colorscheme. I can now easily work out which units are mine and which are my opponent's in mirrors. Perhaps my favorite thing about the colorblind mode tough, is the minimap. Its super easy to spot enemy dots moving around on it now where as before it was very easy to miss unless I was paying very close attention to it. all in all extremely happy with this addition.

I am NOT colorblind, so my question: do this solve the problem to people with blue/green and other colors or only red/green?

As I said in 1st post, Color Blind mode changes green/yellow/red scheme into blue/cyan/orange. Also it makes build grid brigther and darker minimap. Thats all it changes
P.S. I'm not color blind too, just love blue color more than green.

I think the general idea is that only red/green colorblind people had problems with the red/green colour scheme. Between the two options, everyone should be catered to...aside from people with total monochromatic vision.

Another general idea is that blue/orange feels more contrast than green/red for non-color blind players. Isn't it?

I remember pitching this in one of the WoL response emails. Their response was: "Good idea, we'll get to it when we can." HotS was announced and still no sign of it, so just gave up hope. During the HotS beta I was pretty vehement in emails and on the private forum they set up about getting this done, glad to see it finally came to fruition.

Incidentally, I'd like to know exactly what form my colourblindness has. I was diagnosed as a pretty young kid but would like to see a proper breakdown, without having to pay my optician for a full test

Blizzard do things like that and don't get called on it enough because it's a niche issue. I mean they removed compatibility with the game working on pre-Mac OSX 10.6 with their big WoL update, but copped little flak for that.

Well, it seems that it's a bit hard for Blizzards to add such a small features like this one or replay scrolling

It's most frustrating because the functionality was already there, but hey fuck third-party mods that improve the game right?

Well, on other side, people can abuse game modding. Remember things like giant transparent silhouette instead small one for observer? So they decided to fix everything under "Resource checking alltime" option which was added with Streaming system

I'm colorblind and the new minimap is going to be SOOOOOOOOOO much better.

I'm not sure how other types of colorblindness will be helped but I imagine there will be very few people without a good option now. But it'd be nice if blizzard just let you set the colors you want for ally/enemy.

This is pretty awesome for me, I can actually differentiate units on the minimap now.
That said, it blows my mind that,
1) This took so long.
2) They give us a 'color blind' mode rather than just giving us drop down lists to pick whatever colors we like for everything.

I really hope they're actually taking note of people who are continually posting about this. It's probably one of their biggest mistakes thus far in SC2. They literally destroyed server side unit modifications because they wanted to change things themselves... then never followed up with it. (People with STC on only affected their own units and the mod had no impact on the game whatsoever)
I would use this mode but I can't stand the blue/cyan D: Sorry~
edit I somehow missed this:

Okay, do you really think this stuff was incredibly prevalent or do you let your emotions rule the past? There was one thread on TL with all mods for visuals and none of those affected game play negatively/tampered competitive gameplay - purely aesthetics. Now sure, people COULD change things like cloak units borders and such but that was nothing less than "cheating", however the amount of people who went through this process were very minimal. But again, we're not saying that mpq editing should be allowed...
The people who are arguing for STC are attempting to convey the fact that it was a better viewer experience for many, and on top of that, a better player experience. It only affected those who opted to use it. So, when the options were already there, and Blizzard claims on more than one occasion that they support it, why would they destroy the functionality and then leave us hanging for nearly 2 years now? It's absurd for you to equate the two above statements when what we're asking for is them to make good on what they originally said. You should keep in mind, as the poster above me has, that simply being able to choose how colors show up helps everyone, and in a fair way. There is literally no reason against it. The functionality is already in the game. The only thing needed is a simple interface with color schemes or a color wheel and selections of what would go where or how "strong" it would appear. If GameHeart can do it I'm sure Blizzard wouldn't have that hard of a time...

that artwork is so funny. love it.
as for the color blind thing, i say why not. it doesnt appear to hurt the non-color blind people, and it helps out others. i would like to see it demonstrated first to judge for sure though.
