I dunno if I'm living in the stone ages, I know most people run on higher resolutions or with widescreen...
But the new design for the site makes it too wide. The right sidebar is off the screen entirely, meaning I have to either scroll left and right to use the site properly or zoom out making everything tiny and hard to read. Basically, this sucks.
For various reasons I like this resolution best with the hardware I'm using and I know I can't be alone. My understanding is that the site needed to be wider to accommodate a new form of ad banner - but because TL's design has always been pretty cluttered with two sidebars it just doesn't work for me.
I dunno if there's a solution for this but I figured I'd give the feedback.

You're correct that you're living in the stone age, but it eats enough of 1920x1080 to not be side scrolling that I'm inclined to agree that the width is a bit too hefty. I don't really have room to have much open besides a web browser now. I could run two or three displays, but I'm not really inclined to rearrange my desk just to fit my web browser.

Netbook users must be sol right now.
I'm on a 1280x1024 at work and while it fits if I full screen, the longer I use this the more and more clumbsy it feels. Having posts with a width of over 900 makes reading feel akward too.
I completely understand why TL wanted to go to the larger banner, but stretching out the whole site just to fit it in the same place makes no sense to me at all. Why not just put the ad banner below the toolbar and above the main/side bar windows? I would much rather scroll an extra 50 pixles than have this format.

I agree, moving the banner ad to be above the sidebars instead of between them probably would have been a much better option.

new layout looks great at work and at home, 1024 x 768 is now what 640 x 480 used to be in windows xp..... a lot of people use widescreens nowadays

maybe a "low res" option (less width) for people having this kind of issues could help

As much as it sucks to say this; we did research by looking at other websites, thought about the future of monitors, and analyzed our own stats to see whether we should go ahead with this. Based on the fact that under 3% on TL uses a resolution of 1024x768, and likely less in the future, we decided to do this.
It really sucks for the users that got hurt by this but I also hope that there is some understanding. This was a really big thing for us and I hope you guys still keep supporting us.

We still you Naz.
I have to scroll right to see everything, but at least the main thread is completely in screen. The only thing I am missing is stuff that doesn't change so it isn't that bad.

Would it be somehow possible to render the mobile version of the site for users with small resolutions? Many smartphones these days have resolutions comparable to 1024x768 (albeit widescreen) so I feel some sort of compromise could be reached that way.

It would be nice to be able to reach the mobile site through some sort of URL - m.teamliquid.net doesn't do it, and you can only turn it on or off on the phone (presumably through browser magic you could force it...)

sorry for this but 1024x768 MAD MAN, you must be a baller running voodoo2's in SLI!
Abet to say that most people are above that ie that 3% and further most modern web browsers support zooming in and out which you can use to scale it to fit better. I really like the increase in width i often found all that white space annoying as it becomes half the screen at resolutions of 1920 and up.
edit: does tl has a mobile version? i changed my user-agent string to be an iphone essentially and didn't bring up a redirect to mobile site, i would check but i don't surf the web with my cellphone i use it as a cellphone and work phone is for work.

While I'm using 1900x1200 monitors, the TL web site is now too wide for my convenience. The important thing you may have missed in your research is that a lot of users don't want the browser to occupy the whole screen space. EVERY other web site I visit requires less width than TL, I'm constantly adjusting the width of the browser window when switching from and to TL. If you wanted to expand the ad banner, why didn't you make it use the whole width of the page instead of squeezing it in-between the two sidebars?

Im so spoiled, I think damn i cant fit two threads side by side anymore, time to buy a bigger monitor. and some people cant even fit one

I am accessing TL on a widescreen at the moment, but it is connected to my netbook, which I will later carry around and use without the external monitor. I probably spend 90% of my time on TL from at home, but that doesn't mean your site should look ridiculous anywhere else.
It's unprofessional.
Your "research" is just rationalization for an inaccessible design. You can write CSS to accommodate widescreen, low-res, and mobile devices: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-mediaqueries/
So no, there is no understanding. Do your homework and fix your site.

Those mobile high resolutions are also high DPI, so you cannot go solely on a pixel measure. Fortunately, it is possible with CSS to ignore pixel measurements in most places.

I got the same "issue", but I fixed it by using "zoom out" in my browser (only for this URL). Maybe this will help others

I think the maximum amount of letters that can go on each row now are too many after you changed your design(may have been before, but now it's more noticeable). It makes it tiresome to read and are not very fun to look at. I took a row and i got about 130 letters (including space). It's recommended to have a row consisting of 55-65 letters, but you can go over a bit, but when you reach 75-80 it's time to make do something about it. I'm taking a course in typography at the moment and that's what my book says. Well this is rules for printed text and the rules for screen-text might be different but i think it would be a good idea to lower the amount of letters that can fit on a row, as that will/should improve the reading experience on the site/forums.

TL forever.
However that does not mean that there should not be an alternate layout available for users of netbooks and mobile devices. I think you could arrange the site so that the large google ad banner still appears at the top while the site is still small enough to fit a 1024 wide display. Might not look as pretty, but I think netbook users would be pretty happy non-the-less.
I'm not going to argue that TL has to support every legacy medium in the book (I want an HTML only 16-bit color compatible site please ) but I think there are enough netbook and mobile users to facilitate looking at this. If nothing else, think of all the site views that you are loosing (and thus ad monies) if TL members start using their netbooks to actually take notes in class instead of view TL...
