(not sure if it is bw forum or this one) Hello.
In vods i watch, protoss player always manage to keep his goons away from opponent units, but still in range to shoot.
Is it pure micro (i.e he moves his goons perfectly and always click on the enemy he wants to shoot at) or is there a state in which to put your goons so that they shoot as soon as a unit is in their range? (i tried to press A and click behind enemy, but my goons then come closer to my enemy).
Thx in advance.

ur technique is actually correct as far as i know =P

cool micro. I duno how they do it though. Does anyone know how far dragoon range are with and without sight upgrade. Don't give me the measurements in matrices because I don't know how much one is. Tell me in units like 3 goons, or some other medium size starcraft unit.

Get somewhat close to the enemy and wait for them to come, that way goons will attack from as far as possible.
If you dont expect them to come, get close to them and the goons will see the enemies and attack from far away, I think.

Use hold instead of attack -_ -;

Thx for the answers.
I'll do as you say, FrozenArbiter.
Cheers.

Actually, another thing you can do is, as you're microing back, attack command behind your goons. That way they don't move into the fire of the enemy units. In general, FA is right, hold position is best.

yeah, attack move behind youre goons, they will run back until something comes in range, you then quickly give a normal move command, the goons fire one shot, move out of range again, you a+move again behind them,...

Ahah another thing to try tonight.
Thx

FA, I thought patrol has the fastest reaction time?? Might be wrong though...

hold can also get them bugged, so you have to take time to press ssssss to move them when it might be too late
|
I prefer stop, hold can be very dangerous.

move and target individually whenever you see a progamer's goon walk forward before shooting at a target moving towards it, you know he missed

attack move in the direction you want to move. if ur goons are within range theyll immediately fire at the guys. then quickly right click to resume moving in that direction. this is the same way u can move towards with melee to surround or block. hold position and patrol are better except they make goons freeze bug a lolt. also targetting will cause goons to pause and often get frozen bug unfortunately :/ so if u target u are not going to hit and run so fast but sometimes its still worth it to target obviously

either move and target or move and hold depending on how important targeting is and how accurate you are.

totally agree. does anyone know why goons freeze up and shit? its sucha pain in the ass to ALWAYS micro goons cause they freeze so much.
i've been noticing that single unit (goon) micro messes up my atck totally. now i just use attack and patrol. anyone got suggestions on how to adjust to freezing goons? especially vs rines .. ex: 1 goon vs 3 rines.

Your probably clicking your goons too far ahead.. keep them still close.. this is something i practiced in micro maps.. (i.e. 1 goon vs 2 zealots)
|
if the goons get stuck i find the best way o unstick them is sleect, press holdpos then move again. it always works for me. about your question use attack command, if u are targeting individually then press A before u click on the unit. the left click, the upshot is if u miss you arent wasting time by telling them to MOVE instead of attack.
