Hey guys, the update and news that a whole lot of people in TL are waiting for is FINALLY here!!!! I hereby introduce our main and most informative source of information regarding the first ever low level rank TL-community Starleague that is up and running to be all included in this thread. Introducing...... the Novice Starleague News and Announcement Center!!

**What is NSL you ask? Well oh boy, you sure have been missing out and living under a rock for the past weeks on the broodwar thread in TL as all the info can be obtained on here!! (not repeating myself again explaining)**

Eight news/announcement (2/18/10):
Hello hello! Long time no update! I have been sick with a flu for 2 weeks, caught up with finishing my 15 page paper, places to go and people to do, and etc. But now I am back! So to recap and bring back all results and past, here it is starting from the oldest to most recent updates:

NSL Ro16 Group Selections

+ Show Spoiler [NSL Ro36] +
NSL Ro36

+ Show Spoiler [NSL Qualifier Round] +
NSL Qualifier Round

+ Show Spoiler [Older News/announcements] +
Seventh news/announcement (1/20/10):
+ Show Spoiler +
Hey guys, I made a separate thread regarding NSL Qualifier Round located here. So anything related or questions toward QR should be addressed there rather than here. Thanks!

Also, the qualifier round is THIS WEEK! So prepare yourselves and good luck!!! O-ops will take charge of Thursday's round and I will be around for Friday's round, so best of luck!

Sixth news/announcement (1/16/10):
+ Show Spoiler +

Hey guys, sorry for my lack of appearance the past few days. I've been overused, enslaved and became what was "Child Labor Terran" like Flash was a year ago except the fact it's real life business and not Starcraft. In any case, as everyone should realize and know, the NSL #1 Qualifier Round brackets are finally up!!! They are on the second post of this thread where my co-host, O-ops, was able to create a pretty neat and nice system of organizing... but in case you are lazy and cannot scroll down to the second post of this thread, here's a link.

Now that you know the rules for the Qualifier (located on the spoiler section of Qualifier), who you're playing against, the maps, and the times (listed with the date on the spoiler section of Qualifier), I think you guys are all set and ready to go to start and kickoff our grand tourney of Novice Starleague!!! So I hope to see you all next week when this finally begins!! (If you don't.... well, you automatically fail and lose.... )

Fifth news/announcement (1/12/10):
+ Show Spoiler +

Due to a lack of response from my co-host the past few days, the following groups for the Qualifier Rounds were not yet finalized and wasn't able to have a real FINAL list of people playing. The list below on my first post isn't the final FINAL list which means there were some more changes. But since my co-host has the real final list, I cannot organize the list myself yet. It has seem he's busy or something has happened to him for being MIA so therefore, I decided that I will organize the groups for the Qualifier Round myself.

However time is lacking at the moment with the supposed Qualifier Round date of this Thursday and Friday. With such short notice and time, I hereby postpone the Qualifier Round for another week making the round happen on the following Thursdays and Friday. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may follow and I understand if you cannot take part of the first NSL due to these short notice changes. Thank you.

Fourth news/announcement (1/10/10):
+ Show Spoiler +

Alright guys since people are very confused and lack of spending time to read on the posts, I will make this simple and clear: MAP POOL FOR QUALIFIER ROUND =/= MAP POOL for the rest of NSL....

The Official Map Pool for NSL #1 (which EXCLUDES the Qualifier Round) are as follows:

1. Destination
2. Heartbreak Ridge
3. Fighting Spirit
4. Match Point
5. Outsider SE

The official map pool for Qualifier Round: click on the spoiler on QR format rules....

Thanks and stay tune for your group assignments very soon!

Third news/announcement (1/8/10):
+ Show Spoiler +
Alright, as I have gotten pretty much absolutely no objections regarding the maps to be used in the Qualifier Round next week, they are now 100% official. So that means for all participants, please start practicing for them as you will start next week on either Thursday or Friday of next week.

My co-host wasn't able to organize in time to give me the 6 groups that will play on Thursday and the other 6 groups on Friday, so stay tune for that sometime this weekend of who you will play and when. But honestly, if you said Thursday on the signup, 99.9% chances are you got the Thursday one, and 99.9% chances for Friday while the "both" people will just fill in gap to make up the split.

Finally some people have PM me for the fact that they can't make it due to time but remember that these "8 PM EST, 5 PM PST" were SET TIME from the very beginning of the sign up thread. So for those of you who said you can't make it, you will still be counted in the Qualifier Round and if you don't show up, you'll just get a bye within 30 minutes of your assigned time.... (as prediction is 30 minutes per game unless you cheez yourself away in 5 minutes...)

That is all and I have "copy and paste" the assumed final list that O-ops put up on the other thread on the first post of this thread. Good luck and start preparing!!!

NSL #1 Qualifier Round format:

+ Show Spoiler +
NSL #1 Qualifier Round:

Date: January 21, 2010 OR January 22, 2010 (determined by preferred dates from application)
Time: Starting at 8:00 PM EST (5:00 PM PST)
Where: Iccup channel "op NSL"
Total Number of Players: 72 Players
Total Number Advancing to Ro36: Exactly 36 Players
Maps:

First Phase (Bo1): Match Point
Second Phase (3 way Round Robin): Destination
Third Phase (optional 3 way FFA - Bo1): Neomedusa
Fourth Phase (optional #2 vs #3 on top 3 - Bo1): Lost Temple (dead serious)
Final Phase (#3 from top 3 vs #1 from bottom 3 - Bo1): Heartbreak Ridge

Format (now the big guns!):

In order to create a fair and fun environment from the very start of the league within this bloody qualifiers, my staff team and I was able to formulate an unique system in order to advance into the Round of 36 which is the next round. First off, as this is the first NSL ever, the overall format for NSL is the OSL style where in the Ro36, you end up with "12 seeds" of Ro36 which are fought off in Ro24. Therefore, after a few hours of trial and error, combining equations and using engineering skills, I present to you the answer to all questions regarding the format:

In an assumption of 72 players, there will be 12 groups of 6 players. Each group will have 6 players where the first step will be a Bo1 separating the top 3 from the bottom 3. Then the fun starts there...

[Note: ONLY 3 PLAYERS WILL ADVANCE FROM EACH GROUP NO MATTER WHAT!!]

The top 3 AND the bottom 3 will then go into a 3 way "round robin" battle. Starting from the top 3, the first place or #1 of the top 3 in this second phase will automatically ascend and advance to the Ro36 along with the RO36 SEED. They will obtain this automatically by showing superiority over all the other 5 players in their group by advancing first.

The second place or #2 of the top 3 will also automatically advance to the Ro36 but without the Seed given, meaning that they will have to fight off an opponent before the Ro36 Seed player in order to make it to the next step; which is the Group Selections/Ro16. They advance but they will have to play an extra opponent during the Ro36 stage.

The third place or the #3 of the top 3 will be dropped down and await for his/her second and final chance to advance out of the group as the bottom 3 that lost in the initial Bo1 match at the start will have a round robin battle as mentioned. The winner of this "bottom round robin" will then advance up to face in the final battle against the third place player of the top 3. So thus, the initial losing player may have a second chance to advance out of this qualifier round alive. Both players will start face will in one final epic Bo1 battle to decide final candidate. Winner of this last battle will advance to the final spot of Ro36 stage.

[FAQ: What if the round robin results into a 3 way tie?!?]
In an event like this (as we have also put this into our plans), an optional Bo1 special 3-way FFA tie-breaker match will occur that will take place on either the top 3 or the bottom 3 round robin. In the case of the bottom 3, only the winner of these 3 players will advance to the final battle against the #3 player of the top 3.

However, in the case of the top 3 players tie, the winner of the FFA will announce itself as #1 of the top 3 and follows the rules above by advancing to the Ro36 with a seed. The 2 remaining players of the top 3 will have a special Bo1 match to settle things of who is #2 and #3 of their small group to respectively part ways as according to the rules above; where #2 advances with no seed, #3 faces off the winner of bottom 3.

A brief overview of Qualifier Round format. Image credit goes to Zozma!

This concludes the fixed new format of the NSL #1 Qualifier Round which may possibly be used in the future NSL Qualifier Rounds as well.

*****UPDATE******

Sorry for being late with the results. Here is the Thursday Qualifier results and standings:

I forgot to actually mark the number, so sorry about that :/. Anyway, the first on the table is first seed, the second on the table finished second, and third for last.

I moved Zeep and Bears down to group 6, since that group still has 2 slots left for winners' round robin (only one guy showed up lol), and had them played there.

There are only 3 players for each groups in the standing because only 3 showed up for each groups. I had them played round robin just to determine seed; all of them qualified for just showing up ;/

Here is the groupings for Thursday ro36:

I do not have Friday's groups set up yet; heck, i just got the results from Striker. The guy is still sick as hell; it's very possible that i will have to delay Friday's groups for yet ANOTHER week In any case, i should be able to run the Thursday group this week, so be ready.

I will post Friday's qualifier results, standings, and groupings as soon as i can. Striker did not record the results for individual matches however, so it's gonna be very vague.

Again, sorry for the delay.

Quickstriker did not record the score for each match, so i can't post them. Sorry :/

God that qualifier is just -_-
Why didn’t you guys just make it groups of 6 and every body plays everybody, WCG style, its easier to track and manage and also if you lose the first game it doesn’t mean you are at a massive disadvantage like with this

I agree. group of 6 where everyone play each other would be better. (imo)

Because this way is more fun, less games to be play technically (to advance as #1, you ideally need 3 games, and 4 games for the other 2) to advance, and has its own unique system that we devised. Besides, qualifier is SUPPOSE to be hardcore weed-out style and I didn't want just a random 6 way round robin. This format that I laid out has its strengths and weaknesses but it's much more favorable and interesting than some boring 6 people WCG style.

So you have a bo1, what if theres two D+ that play each other then theres 4 D's that play each other, the D+ is put into a shitty position due to losing against best person in his group, dosen't mean he deserves to be in the bottom three
Edit: Its funner for the players if they don't get fucked over after one game

What's the point of playing a Novice league when everyone not a solid D+ gets 'weed out hardcore'?

I don't get it.

If that happens, the D+ will rape the loser group and proceed to rape the poor soul who's at the bottom of the winner trio.

Since the groups are randomized, i think this is a good power-protected format that allows the losers of the first stage a second chance. It is most likely that if someone upsets, he will be place in a group with stronger than he is, while the one who got upset-ed will be place in a group with weaker players than he is. This results in both of them having a rematch, with the stronger one advances.

This is under the assumption that upsets would rarely happens, however.

Look, it's the qualifier, have you ever seen in the real OSL or MSL offline preliminaries where the best players always go through successfully?? Look at sAviOr, as hardest as he tried, he didn't made it past this round DESPITE the fact the other players were weaker and lesser than him. Does that mean he sucks? No, it just mean the other guys prepared really hard. NaDa is another example, also BoxeR and I can go on and on. This NSL Qualifier format that I formalized is done through carefully thinking and unique in its own way.

While i wouldn't say "weed out hardcore", the point of the qualifier is so that the stronger players get in while the weaker players get out no?

Edit: If you can pulled a cheese at least twice, once in stage one and one in round robin, i think you have a pretty decent shot of making it to ro36. While i'm not saying this is easy, i think it's a bit easier than the single elim bo3/bo5 format in the osl offline prelim no?

It seems a bit unfair that you get a 0-1 handicap even once making #1 in the bottom 3 and will struggle to advance just because of losing a single BO1 at the beginning. I like the idea of having groups of 3 as with all the different timezones and whatnot having 5 games all at once might be hard to organise but too much weighting is put on the first BO1s.

Why not just remove the 1-0 lead for #3 over #1 of the lower group. It seems you put it in place to make it 'fair' but instead you are giving two wins for that original BO1 win when the #3 of the top group will probably go 0-2 in his group and the bottom leader go 2-0. This seems like he has put in enough effort doesn't it? The bottom player will have already proved themselves by winning twice in the lower section while the guy he is playing off against only won the first BO1 and probably none after that. Just seems really weird to give him a 1-0 lead as like I said all things even he is getting two wins for that single BO1 win.

Well... yea you're right... I originally planned it without the 1-0 lead for #3 over #1 of the lower group since my co-host stated to me that it's fair and understandable for it to be this way. But then again, your logic sounds more acceptable and I agree with what you are saying. Harder to keep track like this too so by tomorrow, I'll make the final call after discussing this with o-ops or he can post his reasoning on this thread before I do too in order for he to make his claim. And more voices and opinions would be nice regarding this. Thanks.
