EDIT: I want to clarify that I did not mean to make it sound like there won't be basic player to player chat - hell you can even have a group conversation as far as I understood it. What I *THINK* they said, however, is that they wouldn't have Brood War USA-1 or op ToT), that type of channel.
Unless I misheard, during the Bnet 2.0 panel they said there will NOT be chat channels for Bnet 2.0 - not at launch anyway.
Why? "Because we have something much bigger planned, chat channels are messy".
Can someone please tell me I misunderstood them? I hope they AT LEAST have country channels.

I gathered that you'll be able to make your own chat channels with the IM-like feature, but a main public chat won't exist.
|
I heard that too, but assumed that I either misheard it or misinterpreted it.
It really doesn't make much sense to not have chat channels at all. I'm not a fan of the "we'll have it eventually, just not at launch" statement that Blizzard uses sometimes, given how long "eventually" turns out to be for the company.

you did not mishear thats what they said. I don't even know how bnet will work without channels. What we do just mass games off the AMM system and never talk to anyone but ingame? That sucks ass, and is boring as shit. How also can we ever obs a game if you can't talk to people and find out there playing? What they have a button to join a random game to obs?

There better be a way for me to meet new people Chat channels have always been my favorite feature over a lot of other online games and Xbox live.
They never said anything about clans >.<

That's how games for windows live works - fucking retarded system.

I ran 10+ km earlier today but I think I'm gonna go for a second run, get rid of some energy.

this sounds nasty! i hope they know what they're doing.

I think it'll work like MSN or things like that (or Steam). You have the list of people connected, you can chat with one guy. But you can chat with your whole clan, or chat with your "party", or things like that.
|
Yeah I agree Windows Live sucks majorly, and I really don't like how Steam doesn't really have any chat channel support. Impulse at least has game oriented channels.
Blizzard is continuing down the path of 'hey lets copy what is working for these guys' instead of improving on what they currently have.
Next big announcement will be "Players won't have names anymore and chat will be limited to a few phrases in a dropdown box - We feel this will cut down conflicts in game and promote friendlier gamers. Plus we have big plans for this later on". Ala the Windows online games (poker, checkers, etc).

omg indeed. How could they forget the CLAN system? !!!
|
If they say they're planning to do things better, bet is that it's going to be better. The main goal of Blizzard is to sell the most copies they can, and it wouldn't be a good thing for them to cut off chat channels.
Once again, let's wait and see, but I'm pretty sure it'll be okay in the end...
|
I took it as they mean't that there won't be specialized chat channels like on bnet (zerg strategy, terran strategy, etc) that are premade at launch but they'll make them over time based on user preferences or something. Not that chat channels don't exist at all

Once again, let's wait and see, but I'm pretty sure it'll be okay in the end... Better != Better. You don't understand, the larger a company gets, the more distorted its perception of what better becomes.
EDIT: In retrospect, if its something like how they did WoW channels then it should be alright.

I swear to god.. I have completely lost faith in blizzard now. Why the hell can't they just leave things ALONE, and let battle.net be as It's always been... you should be allowed to talk in channels, allowed to play with LAN, allowed to have multiple names... really blizzard? have you all gone batshit crazy?

Lol that reminds me: Rob Pardo: I mean really, how many people here actually play our games offline? *Entire Audience*: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Rob Pardo: ......... really? College kids aren't connected?
(to be fair, he re-asked the question in a clearer way, but a decent number of people still "wooo":ed)

I'm glad they won't have the channels, in my 10 years of playing blizzard games, I've never seen anything even remotely useful said in the pub channels. Channels should be created on demand only, so as to avoid unnecessary load on the servers, which will now have to manage a lot more information (achievements, advanced matchmaking, online replays (not at launch but someday), etc.)
|
Public Channels really are useless most of the time. SpamBots, random flames - no need.
