Totally unrelated, but I was like

"Hey, Jinro has a new cute arbiter icon"

Then it froze and I giggled like crazy.

On topic, more MLG stuff always sounds like a good thing. I do hope the quality of their events keeps increasing. I really liked MLG Columbus but Anaheim seemed like a step back.

Why is MK9 being added to the circuit over better Fighting games like Street Fighter? And more fun-to-watch fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Edit: reading through the topic.

Sundance has said he's trying to get Capcom games, but the previous CEO kind of pissed the living hell out of Capcom, so it's going to take some work.

Then why not try and get BlazBlue or something?
You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

MLG regularly picks up a questionable game and unlike CPL they know how to do that. if you can remember when SC2 first got picked up, most people were extremely dissatisfied with how little they supported it originally. now to then is a rags to riches comparison. that's because MLG isn't retarded like CPL and they approach new circuit games with cautious optimism.

When we announce our new structure (*when* we do...thanks SD for stirring you guys up ), you'll see that we agree with you. 'Mega weekends' of action are not going anywhere. Just expect more of them (not too many...trust me on that), with clear paths to inclusion in the tournaments highest levels of competition (e.g. No more hanging onto pool play spots for too long). Also, we really like the GSL exchange program, and we have some great ideas on how to expand it...globally.

Stay tuned. But trust me, we don't want to over saturate the market either.

1. Already covered the issue of Capcom games in the edit as you can see that you quoted.
2. BlazBlue isn't made by Capcom.

Also, why not Tekken?

It seems to me from the limit amount of information out there, that the mega weekends are still there, but in order to create a more dynamic player environment and provide more fluidity to the point ranking, multiple smaller events will supplement the larger ones. Allowing for more opportunities to succeed or fall without letting player perform well once and coast into the grand finals, or having a player miss a tournament here and there early on and have no real chance to make it to the grand finals regardless of performance later on.

I could be mistaken though.

We will never take away the aspirational aspect of the open bracket. I wish I could be fully open, but we are not ready yet. Soon.

Awesome news, loving MLG even more! And to those saying MK9 is a bad choice, I respectfully have to disagree. MK9 is only getting bigger, especially after its excellent Evo finals showing. Before Evo it was basically AE and MVC3. Leading the pack with tekken behinf it, but MK9 completely blew tekken out of the water(Bob vs Bob 80% of the matches, and Bob vs Law the other 20%). Sure id love to see MVC3 and especially AE at MLG, but until things are worked out with capcom, MK9 is definitely a great substitute.

An offseason is important. Remember, e-sports has to compete with REAL sports as well too.

The NFL and NCAAF season are coming up; I'm really interested to see if that dips into MLG's numbers. I know for my part, I'm a huge NFL fan, and e-sports has something great for me to get into during the offseason.

However, if an MLG even is during a weekend where there is NCAA football all day Saturday and NFL football all day Sunday...I'm probably not going to be the only one choosing to watch football instead of Starcraft.

So my point is you can't just have MLG events going on all the time; you'll reach a saturation point where people lose interest compared to other things.

I recall the audience shouting "Mortal Kombat... SUCKS!" at Evo. Maybe it was just trolling, but that's still a significant portion of the audience that shouted "SUCKS!". And you could say the same thing about Kung Lao vs. Kung Lao, etc. in it.

That sounds great, and the GOM exchange program was such a fantastic decision, it has 'upped' the prestige on the $5k 1st place by so much, where no one would care if not for the Code S first prize!

Glad you are thinking of ways to make pool play more fluid, and yes the open bracket is always important as it is an awesome way for less famous players to make a name for themselves. It is also something like the Code B qualifiers (which is vital and brings hype).

If you ever go into a league system, it is important to have both Code A, Code S, etc. KESPA and BW pro-scene is run similar to the professional Go/Baduk scene (another mind-sport like Chess) where qualifications to become a pro is insanely difficult and only the truly passionate make it through. Idra doing well at the Challenge Tournament in BW was truly impressive.

There are too many Tom Dick and Harrys who just stream, decide to play 24/7 for fun (as opposed to training to be the best) and call themselves a pro. A pro has to meet a minimum standard of skill and play, and the bar is continually being pushed higher by the truly passionate.

This seems to be the appropriate place to put this:

http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/league-of-legends-joins-the-mlg-pro-circuit

Quick Version: MLG adding LoL for Raleigh, 20,000$ Prize Pool, but only 4 teams invited (and looks like to open bracket?)

Okay, yeah, LoL is definitely a good addition. Much better than NASL's HoN. Just another reason to prefer MLG.

This sucks. I mean Sundance has shown that he only cares about profits and not much else!

Anyone still remember the "if we sell 100.000 tickets I will increase the prize" line?

Dreamhack, IEM, IPL, ESL, etc... on the other hand have been very community and players centric.

MLG was one of the most professional feeling events I've been to and I feel Sundance has been VERY accommodating with the community. He's just being realistic at the same time. In fact, I'm GLAD something like this is trying to be run as a business, to show that ESPORTS is some serious shit and not some random ass hobby.

I think this is great news! As a viewer, I'd rather not have an off season. That's so that if I want to watch high level sc2, I can do so any time! Cool stuff!
