I don't actually mean I want to regularly see giant walls of text, which I will admit to skimming as well if I don't feel like it would be worth the effort. But there is a happy medium between personal quips/ aggressive and dismissive one-liners and the treatises/essays. Ideally, long enough to give some nuance and evidence to your thoughts, but succinct enough that it is not regularly a chore to read your posts. Sure, some points made on TL require a paragraph to formulate, a few even need a couple of paragraphs. But you have to agree that many points don't need more than a sentence or at most two, more would be fluff. Shitty one-liners aren't shitty because they are one-liners, they are shitty because of the underlying point. We should be happy that they are not shitty paragraphs. I see it as respecting the time of your reader, by putting some effort into boiling down your post to the essentials. It's lazy to just randomly spew out words and then hit post as some seem to do.

They are just basically another version of shitty one liners, with the added caveat that it daunt the more impressional readers. I think it's helpful that they put that little pen symbol next to their names so you know who they are. + Show Spoiler + :D :D :D

In fact, people often get warned (or in the most extreme case, temp banned) for failing to read a recent reply before making their own post. Maintaining a fruitful discussion via forum thread is challenging even when everyone posts concise (but not terse) thoughts, reads all previous replies before posting (or at least, the past few pages if it's a fast-moving thread), and stays away from the most controversial topics (e.g., religion, gun rights). TL veterans have often said they prefer having discussions on TL instead of other online discussion forums because of the expectation that people will actually read what is being discussed carefully prior to posting and avoid simply throwing their own ideas over the wall without a second thought. Of course, this isn't always what actually happens, but it is a very good goal.

I wouldn't personally recommend that since there are some good posts longer than 6 lines, however, I've also seen some posts that are almost a page long that could be summarized in a single paragraph. They look deep but once you read them, you realize that the discussed topic is quite straight forward. Would be nice if posters always focused on being concise in their posts. After all, quality > quantity in these discussions.

Oh, I'm not looking for people to stretch out their crappy posts. More of the same, only longer is not the goal. Redundancy is something I try and get rid of as students are all too 'good' at writing many words about nothing at all. But I do want people to spend a little more time thinking about what they are posting, rather than throwing out dismissive one-liners. To me our current back and forth is pretty ideal. We have fairly different views and are able to clearly explain our differences in two to five lines. That's not too onerous, and certainly is no treatise to make the eyes glaze over.

More thinking before posting would be good, but often the thinking can be summarised in a sentence afterwards.
