After a long anticipated wait, we can finally announce that our European store will open one week from now. Our European store will be open to customers inside the European Union, offering them access to faster shipping and removing the need to pay local customs charges. Unfortunately, the European store will be limited to European Union only. Logistically, this was the best way for us to provide high quality service to the largest group of people.
Every time TL takes on a new project we face a learning curve, and the European store might have been the steepest yet. When we first mentioned our intentions of opening a European store, I can honestly say we didn't fully understand what we were getting ourselves into. Setting up a warehouse and store in the US had gone more or less smoothly, and we did not expect all of the unique problems involved in setting up in Europe. This past year we have spent a lot of time looking for new production and shipping partners, calculating prices, and taking care of countless small details. It took longer than expected, but moving forward it will allow us to have a much better foundation for the store. We're incredibly happy to finalize this process and open our European store.
It needs to be mentioned that we haven't been able to stick to our original pricing plan for the items. At first, we set out to provide faster shipping outside the US, eliminate customs charges, and maintain a near identical price to the US store. Although we were able to deliver on the first two goals, maintaining a similar base price turned out to be unrealistic, and the base cost on our EU store products is slightly higher. The main culprit here is VAT (value added tax), and the prices you will see in our store are with VAT included. For a more detailed explanation, please read our sales manager disciple's post below.
While shipping will be much faster for EU customers when compared to ordering from the US store, the total price after adding on shipping and handling will vary from product to product. In the case of some products, such as the hoodie, the total price will be noticeably cheaper (about 6 Euros) than ordering from the US store. But for the most part the total price with shipping and handling will be similar whether ordering from the US or EU store. In cases of orders of 2 items or more, EU store customers should save significantly on shipping compared to the US store.
In short...
The European store can only ship to European Union member countries.
The base price of EU store products is higher than the NA store due to VAT, while shipping and handling from the EU store is cheaper.
The total price of buying products from the EU store including shipping and handling is similar to the total price of buying from the NA store.
Shipping time from the EU store is significantly faster than from the NA store.
Shipping costs for orders of 2 or more items should be significantly cheaper than from the NA store.
The Golden Rule - all items included to the order after the most expensive one get charged 50% of their full shipping rate.
Shipping rates for the UK are even lower. The Golden Rule applies for all orders in the UK as well
One year after first announcing the European Store, I'm proud to say we have learned a lot and have something great to show for it. The TeamLiquid store has set up shop on two continents, and can provide better service to even more esports fans around the world.

With the EU Store we are delighted to announce new shipping rate calculation system which is consistent and easy to understand across all items. The Golden Rule in this case means that all items included to the order after the most expensive one get charged 50% of their full shipping rate. For example if you've ordered a hoodie and a shirt, you will pay 15 Euros for both - 12 for the hoodies and just 3 for the shirt. In case all items you've purchased cost the same, for example a Spirit and a Swarm shirt, the 50% rule still applies, so you will just pay 6 Euros for the shipping of the Spirit shirt and 3 for the Swarm. On top of the convenience this new system is providing, the customers are going to save a significant amount of money when they place orders for multiple items. Also, because our warehouse is based in the UK, those ordering from within the country will enjoy even cheaper base shipping rates.
Some Sample Orders
Here are some examples of orders from the EU store to demonstrate how our pricing and shipping might work out. For the most part, orders with multiple items will be much cheaper!
For some combinations of items, it's actually a bit cheaper for a European to order from the US store... but shipping is still MUCH faster from the EU store.
The Elephant in the Room: VAT
disciple, TeamLiquid Store Manager
The huge factor in the EU store prices is the common VAT charged on all goods sold across the European Union member nations. I'm sure all my fellow European TLers have a general idea about this tax – why it is paid and why it is such an integral part of the economy in the Union. The VAT in Europe is much higher than the equivalent sales taxes in the US, and it is a major part of doing business here, from setting up our price list for the products to determining the shipping rates for the packages.
The VAT in the Union is approximately 20% of the sold good's value, with some differences depending on country and trade situation. For the purposes of the TL Europe store, it will suffice to say that our warehouse is based in the UK, and thus all our orders inside the European Union are going to be charged with the UK VAT rate of 20%.
Keeping up with the VAT regulations and rules hasn't been easy. For some time we thought we could avoid paying VAT altogether, as we thought we could stay under specific VAT-free sales thresholds for the UK and other Union countries. But just recently the VAT regulation in the UK have been changed, making it mandatory for non-UK based companies to register for the VAT in the UK, regardless the volume of their business. Thus, having our warehouse in the UK meant that our trade was immediately subject to the 20% VAT starting the 1st of December 2012. This forced to us to immediately re-evaluate our prices and shipping rates.
Originally, our goal was to achieve the same prices for our products as in our NA Store, as we strongly believe in treating our community fairly. Unfortunately, that goal is no longer achievable for us. Looking back, starting the venture with this expectation was naïve to some extent, as it's not uncommon to find goods being sold more expensively in Europe than the US. Our lack of knowledge at the time misled our European customers to think we could offer our items in Europe for a lower price. I sincerely regret fueling false expectations, as my intention was always to try and provide our customers with the best value for their money. Still, I firmly believe the EU store improves the conditions for our European customers dramatically in many regards, but at the same time I can understand the disappointment some of you might have now seeing our prices and shipping rates, having waited a whole year.
On the whole, the VAT-included price increase on our goods compared with the NA store is 15%. We've tried to lower the prices wherever we could to make up for the 20% VAT. When you take shipping and handling into account, the total price of buying items from the EU store is about the same as buying from the NA store (with the exception of the hoodie – more on that below). In that sense, there's not much of a price benefit we can offer our European customers by opening the EU store. But there's still a couple of ways the EU store can benefit our EU customers greatly.
First and foremost, customers of the EU store will enjoy much improved shipping. Thanks to her majesty's Royal Mail, shipping across Europe will take approximately 3 to 5 days business days. That's a lot less frustration than waiting four weeks for a package from the US. Naturally shipping inside the UK is going to be even faster and cheaper. Additionally, the shipping costs for orders of two items or more should be noticeably cheaper when ordering from the EU store.
Additionally, a few of the items actually will be cheaper to order from the EU store, once you take shipping and handling into account. Notably, the TL Hoodie is around 6 Euros (around 9%) cheaper for Europeans to order from the EU store. The TeamLiquid Razer Goliathus mousemat and some of our posters are slightly cheaper as well.
Finally, there's no risk of eating an additional customs charge on imported goods. While many packages manage to slip under the customs radar, in strictly legal terms, a tax must be paid on goods imported from the states into the EU. For example, if you lived in Sweden and order from the US store, there was a chance that customs would slap 25% tax on top of the item price and shipping. With the EU store there's no risk of having to pay that kind of "hidden" cost.
Thanks for waiting, we hope you will have fun with it.

Yay, great news (even though I'm in Canada)! Also, TIL that the UK is part of the EU (after some Googling fact-checking). I had always thought the UK was a holdout, but I guess they are just a holdout when it comes to adopting the Euro currency. Turns out that the UK joined the EU's predecessor, which later became the EU.

Well, fuck
As usual Switzerland is doomed - The customs duty and regulations of that are a pain in the ass if you want to sell something to people living in CH
I know how it feels to have to pay a decent amount more for something due to having to import it. Glad that TL is doing this for all the European people out there!

lol
Great news for the rest! Somehow the shipping still feels expensive but I think I will finally grab a Hoodie now.
Edit: At least the risk of custom charge is gone . I got busted last time when I ordered T-shirts...
To Switzerland and the rest of continental Europe, we are looking to extend the EU store to cover everyone in Europe, but we still need to test our shipping. We will do our best to offer great shipping to every country in Europe, unfortunately that won't happen with the store launch next week.

Would be nice if someone can clarify if it really is only European Union or includes the EEA or EFTA?
edit: ninja'ed by disciple already - for swiss at least. What about norway, iceland and liechtenstein? As they are in the EEA they are virtually the same as EU members for a lot of things regarding the EU internal market, I don't know the details though.
That's really nice to hear and as an European I don't mind paying the taxes (indeed I find it's horrible to show the tax at the register in NA instead of displaying straightfully the whole price, it doesn't provide costumer with the full information at all)
Now i am wondering, how and why did you pick up the UK ? For Example Germany's place (geography-wise) is better to reach all part of the current EU,for example Poland which has a fairly big community Is it just a matter of language (for you to easen up the process obviously) ?
On March 07 2013 05:31 Zeon0 wrote: can someone explain to me why shipping is so expensive? why does Amazon send me everything for free and here i have to pay 10€+?
Economies of scale, they can afford to give discounts.
The golden rule of "shipping" is laughable. I almost never (99% of the time) see online shops adding extra shipping fees for ordering a second product (exceptions are very heavy stuff (like furniture and so on), but this stuff is compared to it, very light.).
And:
why mousepads is 9€ shipping ? why they are higher then tshirts etc ?

Glad to hear that! An update on shipping to non-EU countries would be very much appreciated.

fully agree with this statement.
Our orders are shipped with Royal Mail. Royal Mail charges are based on weight as certain range of weight falls into a different price. The mousepad is twice as heavy as a single shirt and it falls in a higher shipping range.
when i add the tsl4 poster to the cart..it still says i have to pay 7 dollars for it..But wasn't the poster free if I payed for tsl4 subscription? Thank you

Is the current version strictly EU or does it include the EEA? You said Switzerland, which is not part of the EEA, but for the rest the EEA is anyway almost functionally identical to the EU in a lot of respects. (And I am Norwegian, so that'd be nicey-nice.)

At this point I think everyone would've liked to have it in their country as that would imply best rates for that country. Aside from the language factor which is certainly present, our UK distributor has a reputation we can trust, on top of that shipping with Royal Mail has its benefits as they are charging the same rate across all European countries, so when we manage to expand the store to cover all countries outside of the European Union, the shipping we provide for these countries shouldn't be more expensive. Finally, the UK was our top european market historically with Germany as a close second and Sweden coming on 3rd place, so giving best rates to our biggest market makes sense as well.
Important: To people from all European countries excluded from the initial launch (Switzerland, Norway, Ukraine, Serbia etc...) Please PM me if you wish to help us test the shipping time and taxes to your country !

The shirts are identical, we just got them printed locally. The hoodie was extremely expensive to make using American Apparel in Europe, so we produced identical bespoke hoodie by another manufacturer, using the same materials and the same model. More on that when we launch the store next week

I'd like to go ahead and state how incredibly cool it is that TL is so open about all of this. That post gave every single detail on price changes, where extra costs were coming from, had a built in price comparison between NA and EU orders, a complete explanation of shipping charges, etc.
So many companies would have just been like "We opened a store in the EU and this is what shit costs for you", maybe it's just me but I think the transparency of TL is one of the thinks that makes this site/company/community so god damn awesome.

We're still working on that as best as we can:

To reduce taxes setting up in Luxembourg would have been a better idea, VAT rate is only 15%, it's a member of the Euro zone, and it's actually part of Europe (unlike the UK ).
I got some of those TL "freebies" a while ago (posters and such) from the TL movie, can i order them now from the EU store? I haven't used those vouchers yet.

UK is part of the EU and has been since 1973. I assume you meant to say that it doesn't use the Euro, but I'm not sure that's really relevant.
How much does it cost to buy clothes USA - > EU? (Product price + shipping) * (VAT + Duty) + customs handling fee.
I live in Denmark. VAT is 25%. <--- varies by country. Duty on clothing is 12%. <--varies by product type.
Lets say i bought two t-shirts at 44usd together with 14usd shipping, for a 58usd combined package value. Customs treat shipping as part of the product value (which makes sense; it's a service bought outside EU).
The end result would be the following: 58usd package value + (25% VAT + 12% duty) + 30usd customs handling fee = 109usd
Here's how it works when ordering (retail) from EU -> EU. Duty is paid on the product when the retailer imports it to EU. It's paid, in theory by you, but you don't deal with it. VAT is paid to the senders country on your behalf by the sender. This means, if i order from UK -> Denmark, i pay 20% VAT in effect. The seller charges 20% VAT on the order and pays it to UK. Or from Poland -> Denmark, 15% VAT.
There's no extra customs handling fee on the package, and duty is paid by on the import value rather than the sales value (so roughly half). So a 44usd product in EU, with the same 14usd shipping cost, would cost (Product cost + EU Shipping cost = VAT-able value) + (sender countrys VAT). 58usd package value + 20% VAT (eg. UK) = 69usd. And then some 6% duty.
When ordering from EU, you're supposed to pay less overall because: The bulk shipping from USA to EU reduces shipping costs. Customs handling fee is done in bulk by the importer. Duty is paid on the import value rather than the sales value, usually halving it in effect. The retailer in EU you buy from may be located in a country with lower VAT.
------------------------ In theory, you're supposed to pay the VAT difference in EU (eg. UK 20% -> DK 25% = i pay 5% seperately to DK), but it's only enforced when you order for over 18000 USD a year or something. Nvm that here.
Duty/VAT is calculated in relation to where the package is shipped from, not where the money are send. At least for us normal mortals.
Prices in EU are always shown with VAT unless otherwise noticed.
VAT differences between EU countries makes it hard for high VAT retailers to compete with low VAT retailers. -----------------------
:S What a bunch of randomness. Feel free to correct it; it's taken off the top of my head from a lifetime of hobby imports.
TLDR: There's usually a high customs handling fee when you buy from outside EU. Buying inside EU will usually save you a lot on sub-200usd orders. The TL EU shipping prices seem kinda steep, but businesses are fit to earn money where they want.

Whou! How can handling and shipping cost so much???
The highest cost( that i have saw) for shipping and handling is 5€(normal size packet(letter= free)) from eu area. Usually it pays around (if it pays) 2 -3€.

First online store I've come across where you pay extra shipping cost per item. Kinda screwed up, it's not handling costs will go up if you send out 2 shirts instead of 1
Normally you'd pay per packet and weight-prices are in large chunks, say 1-5kg to 5-10kg. If you'd slip a mousepad in a package with a shirt handling doesn't go up, I understand shipping goes up when you buy 20 hoodies, because of the volume and weight. Then again, in most cases online stores wont even charge you extra then, because in larger shipments they make enough profit to cover the extra shipment costs.
People complaining about shipping prices can just buy their TL hoodies from another supplier..... Ohh wait, no you can't. Supply and demand basically, speak with your wallet instead of whining about how amazon (one of the world largest online retailers) can offer you prices that a niche store can't.
Will buy once store is up and running and I get a size chart or something similar.

Actually they do. That's why it's called handling, our distributor has more items to pick and pack and they charge per item.
Is the TL Goliathus not sold in the usual Goliathus packaging? 9€ seems extremely high for shipping something that small. I don't think I've ever seen shipping costs that high in the EU. I'm going to buy one regardless, but still, that's really really expensive.

I really appreciate the huge bit about why the prices are higher; shows really good customer support and being self-employed I know how much of a bitch VAT can be!
For people living in the UK is there any way we can collect if we live nearby the distribution centre? Or is this not possible because of the nature of a 3rd party distributor?
I work in a company that distributes mainly in the UK but also Europe and in my experience these postage prices aren't really expensive.

It doesn't. That's literally the first paragraph of this thread.
Well, that's obvious when talking about countries that aren't within neither.... EEA countries do get alot of the tradebenefits of the EU, we do have to follow EU directives... ALOT of EU stuff applies to us ,which was the reason for my inquiery.

First off, congratulations that you finally got this done! I am looking forward to ordering some stuff in the future.
It's done and all good, but reading some of this makes me wonder a bit, whether you actually looked much further than the UK for options to host the store. Again, it's totally fine if you wanted the store in your single largest market. But you could have probably catered the overall European market at a lower price when hosting the shop in central continental Europe.

bonse actually has a valid point and it is not about wanting the shop in your own country. It's just the fact that the VATs in the UK are amongst the highest you can find in the EU. Also, shipping with Royal Mail has probably the worst reputation regarding speed and reliability amongst western European main national Mail providers. And since the Pound is still somewhat strong towards the EUR, the shipping and handling becomes more expensive. You posted DHL express prices in comparison, which is not really comparable to regular RM Shipping, since DHL express is a over-night (or in 3 days across Europe) service much like UBS or FedEx.
Anyways, I am looking forward to my poster and will buy a Hoodie soon!
Last thing: I posted this question months back in a thread but i think there was no answer back then: When you offered the 5% discount for an amount of time for TSL4 subscribers, you announced that the EU store would open soon at the same time. So I held back on ordering my Hoodie and well... it took a while Any chances of getting those 5% on a first order or something? I might not have been the only one who missed out on their discount while waiting for the EU store.

If i try to reedem my liquid rising and another poster it does list them with the regular price. Would be nice if someone could tell me what i´m doing wrong.

There's an issue with our notification system, so it doesn't get updated when the package gets shipped out. All orders from the initial wave were shipped out by the end of last week so you should receive your order any day now. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
Package arrived today! Shirt fits great, Hoodie fits well except for when I wear the hood, its a bit too short and kinda pulls on my head - so maybe I should have ordered L. But its rare that I wear hoodies with the hood on anyways so its all good.

I have the EU hoodie too, at first it felt tight and snug indeed, but it really gets more loose after a day or two
