I think you did a great job commentating at this MLG event, you seem far more comfortable and knowledgeable campared to others( except for Sean ofc ). I hope MLG will keep you around for other events. Thought you deserved the kudos thread.

DJwheat is an amazing caster. You don't even know that he is terrible and doesn't have great game knowledge. He asks questions to Day9 at the right times to explain things in deeper detail. And whoever he cocasts with it flows perfectly with nobody stumbling over one another.

I like that he asks Day9 for further explanations about strategies, etc, since he knows he doesn't have as deep an understanding of the game. Other worse casters just try to make assumptions about the players play-style and are often wrong. He's also very experienced in play-by-play commentary. I think Day9 + DjWheat is probably the best casting duo besides Tastosis.

yeah I also feel JP as the interviewer is a more suitable role for him. especially given the fact that he has chatted with most of the players in the past on SOTG.

Agreed, DJ Wheat really has the chops to cast well in any situation. Good job, man! I remember my first time ever seeing you was at WCG Unreal Tournament years ago. Looks like you've continued to grow and be better and better :D

Favorite moment, in the pre-game commentary before game 1 of IdrA vs HuK on Xel'Naga Caverns:

DJwheat: I love the backdoors [on this map]. They're great.
Day9 (starts laughing and tries to say something in response): Yeah, I mean..(giggles)
DJwheat: The backdoors really get me excited.

wheat has clearly been brushing up on his SC2 knowledge, it's really impressive to see much its grown in such a short time. day9 and wheat are now my favorite casting duo, though tastosis still has a special place in my heart and often times are more funny/entertaining

Agreed, he is more relaxed than the other casters (including day9 imo). Most casters seem to focus on wpm (words per minute) nowadays, which is really annoying. DjWheat's approach is more laid back and he actually takes control over the cast by asking the right questions to day9. He obviously has some experience in doing these type of events

djWHEAT is the only commentator out there that could easily cast just about every game (with an expert co-). It's a big shame he doesn't feature at pretty much every esports event.

Fully agree. I have my favorite SC casters and all, but as a general e-sports caster, Wheat is top notch. His involvement in any event would get my interest, regardless of what games were involved.

EG's Master Cup Series is going to be awesome with Day9 and djWHEAT casting the matches on camera at SirScoot's home in Phoenix on Oct 30-31.

I agree.

DJ Wheat doesn't evade the fact that Day9 should be doing the analyzing, so he is questions Day9 with really intelligent questions, rather than misanalysing or saying the obvious. He's also awesome at commentating the battles and exciting moments.

Good job, I really enjoy when you're on.

Agree 100%. I have always liked DJwheat for casting, even though he doesnt know as much of whatever game he is casting he flows with the other caster awesom. Watched him since Blizzcon 08 :D

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the casting.
Day9 of course is so knowledgeable, and it's funny watching him squirm to maintain the requisite professionalism. (Anyone else see him turn purple when DJ wheat said he liked the backdoor play from kiwikaki? Oh god he wanted to make a joke so bad lol...)

Wheat was great too, and the two seem to work together smoothly.

Despite the issues we've had with the stream, all three of the commentators this weekend have made watching quite a fun time. Very professional, but not without fun.

Hopefully eSports continue to gain popularity in the United States, to the point where people like Day[9], JP, Wheat, Husky and HD can make a decent living being the voice of SC2 here in the states the same way Artosis and Tasteless are in Korea.

I think the most impressive thing about DJ Wheat is that he doesn't only play/cover Starcraft, so being able to be a better caster then 99% of the people who play nothing but says a LOT about how good he is. It's now much easier to explain to new people why he is awesome in that respect.

djwheat in the world of quake is the best caster ever, he's not as knowledgable as a pro player in SC2, but he knows how to cast, and it shows.

there's no awkward silences, stupid assumptions, eveyrthing that a spectator hates when he knows more than the caster.

he is definitely learning though, he's a very smart guy and i bet he's gonna become one of the best shoutcasters in SC2 as well.

ps. i'm proud being casted by that guy in pro QL :> yeww hewwww
Zerg need heavy buffs from Tier 1 to tier 3, against Terran and Protoss. blizzard needs to get on the ball or lose SC2 as an eSports venue.

Yep very solid improvement and stepping his game up, but it is a professional cast so I didn't expect the F word every other word casting we might see elsewhere. Matches have been making this MLG all together a casters delight. A+ Job to Day9 and Wheat on this venue.

I think DjWheat just brings so much experience in esports in general. I think he was a progamer back in like '96? He may not know as much about SC2 specifically as Day9, but he has a ton more esports experience in a wider variety of games, and know a lot about gamer psychology especially in high level tournaments, like MLG.

But ya, he's done a awesome job, and I look forward to seeing him in more stuff in the future.

Gotta agree with this thread. Djwheat is just such a great cocaster with day9. He knows the questions to ask day9 at the right times and is able to take over some of the intense moments in the game and really completes the casting duo. Definitely my favorite casting duo now =D

dj has a great voice, and is really charismatic- I really like him. There is just such great chemistry between dj and Day, great great choice MLG- please repeat Day/JP/dj for Dallas!

He is really good. IMO He's the third smartest caster for SC2 (after Day9 and Artosis)

This is a really interesting point, dj might not be the most knowledgeable, but he just has really good "casting skills". I think as long as there is someone who knows their stuff, like Chill or Day, then dj makes a great co-caster.

I'm going to extend this to say that I've been incredibly impressed with the casting at MLG. JP and dj have improved tons since I heard them last. Keep up the great work djWHEAT and JP!

edit: and of course Day[9] :D

I think wheat could cast any game and be awesome. He is truly a professional caster, in that he is not just limited to SC but can cast pretty much any competitive game. Plus he has a good personality and is a great speaker.

DJ wheat doesnt use more words than neccesary and uses the intel of day9 for more indept info.

I like the trio wheat, JP, day9 alot!

Casting for MLG has been superb. Day9 has been great, but that's also thanks to his co-casters. I have to say, both of the duo's are nice to listen to, and having them alternate was a brilliant move. (adds diversity)

Couldn't be happier with the casting at MLG

Agreed. While nobody on this continent can compare with Day9, I think DJwheat does a great job beside day9. I really want to see more of him and day9 in the future working together.

I like JP, but he doesn't seem to be able to hold himself up in front of a camera like DJWheat. He also seems a little more in awe of day9, while DJwheat doesn't.

Are you kidding? There is simply no comparison. I'm not a hdh hater either, I watch all their casts, but there is no touching Day9. And when he is paired up with someone like DJWheat you just get a beautiful combo.

Anyone notice that djwheat got slightly taller as the mlg cast went on?... Either day9 lowered his seat or djwheat ate his.... wheaties.

Great job commenting though. I'm not sure how the casting lineup is arranged for mlg, but I definitely liked this lineup.

DJ Wheat was perfect. He commented and elaborated, but Day9 would get on details and further explanations. They were the perfect duo. I think they should both cast together for all future MLGs.

Congrats DJ Wheat. You seem to only be improving and surprising me every time you cast.

he's a nice guy and great for esports but it bothers me when he veers off into the color commentary and begins to talk about strategy when i have a suspicion that he's a low gold player. i'm not a hater but MLG could be so much better off by adding someone like torch to balance the commentary out with day9 a little more..

I think that Day9 + JP / Wheat is pretty good

I have always liked Wheat even when he was casting broodwar during Blizzard events because he doesn't talk like a SC2 expert ( he isn't ), he is basicly supporting the main caster and does that really well. Also he has a good voice which is really important for casting.

Wheat and Sean are naturals together. JP is getting better but there is a little auctioneering vibe to his casting. When Wheat and Sean were casting they kept the flow non stop with excitement and good emphasis during moments of climax.

You know, it's the "goldie/broznie" hating that really upsets me. You've seen Idra speak, would you like him casting a game? It's not necessarily how talented the player is. Wheat knows enough to not say anything stupid. Nuff said.

Anyone ? Dj Wheat have years and years of experience in casting, he started casting lans way before Day9, so i don't think that wheat did great because of the awesomeness of day9.

Wheat have just a lot of confident and experience, and have smart jokes, and as he said himself, he likes to ask questions about the games that the audience would think of to make full use of day9 knowledge.

This guy is really impressive as an all around caster, you can give him any game and he would be able to cast it like no problem.

I would be really happy if MLG brought Wheat back for MLG Dallas, I thought he did a great job. I like JP way more as a community guy. Like Carmac for ESL, he announces shit, interviews, does the podcast (which I adore) but only occasionally commentates

One of the most important elements of a casting team is chemistry and I thought Day and Wheat's was great. Humor, easy on the ears, and doesn't pretend to know everything. Hope for more DayWheat[9] casts in the future

DJ Wheat was a really solid co-caster. I loved the way he kept asking questions, so Day[9] could go little bit more in-depth about strategies and such. There wasn't a moment where they tried to speak over each other.

I never really knew much about Dj wheat and when i did see him at blizzcon i didnt like him at first. He reminded me of too much of a straight man (too host-like and not real enough). But after awhile of hearing him on other casts and watching his shows live he is now one of my all time favorites. The dude is hilarious, honest, and pretty much the exact opposite of my first impression after seeing him at blizzcon. Now when i hear that wheat is co-casting i sigh in relief knowing that the cast will be at least highly entertaining, hilarious, and tactfully done. Anyone who doesnt like wheat yet just give him a chance. He has said some of the funniest shit ever on his weekly shows. I wish him the best of luck in the future.

What I really appreciated about DJWheat is that he seemed very natural and comfortable next to Day9, while most everyone else, including JP, are a bit nervous or in awe to be next to Day9.

I remember several years ago (maybe more than several..time quickens as you age) Wheat and his group of pro-casters did a WCG (San Fran I think). He was casting Starcraft even though he was somewhat unfamiliar, and the hate from here at TL towards his ignorance flowed like a faucet (to borrow his Idra roach simile from earlier). But to satisfy the villagers anger, an experienced Starcraft player and member of our own community was allowed to co-cast with him, even though they had no prior commentating experience.

Now, fast forward to the present. The hyper awkward co-caster of that year (who said "uhm" every nanosecond) is now casting for a living in South Korea, while Wheat is getting praised in his own TL thread for a great job (and it was a great job) casting SC2 with Day9, who just happens to be the brother of Wheat's now Korean original co-caster from the old WCG.

Isn't life funny :D

yeah, everyone i've spoken agrees that Wheat + Day[9] is the best duo for these kinds of things. What I liked about them is that the flow is just perfect, they don't interrupt eachother and it seems that they both think alike as their flow is incredible.

That was IEM btw, not MLG, but anyway, it was TheGunRun's first time live casting as far as I know. Wheat has done countless live casts at big events, so not to discredit TheGunRun, since he's awesome, but you can't really compare the two.

I think all the casting this weekend was great but I agree that DJ Wheat should get special props. I can't imagine it's easy to cast alongside Day9 (not that that's Day9's fault) but he pulled it off well.

I'm still waiting for Day9 and Artosis to cast together. I think that would be great.

I really enjoyed djwheat's casting at MLG. You can tell he doesn't have great knowledge of the game but I love his enthusiasm when casting. Day9 and djwheat are such a good duo, probably the best imo.

This, definitely this. Day9 has the the most knowledge regarding SC2 strategy amongst the casters at MLG and DJ Wheat's pairing with Sean was a great way to draw that knowledge out.

Casters like Day9 and Artosis have a crapload more knowledge on SC2 strategy than your average player, I am hugely in favour of any casting combination that seeks to draw that knowledge out.

The best part about DJWheat's casting is that he knows what he doesn't know. He always deferred to Day[9] at the proper time and asked great questions to even further bring out Day's expertise. They really do make a great pair.

Awesome that djWHEAT is finally starting to accumulate props in the sc2 scene! He is a great guy and did an awesome job at MLG!

WHEAT and Day[9] are a dreamteam and it would be great if they casted together more often. You can't get much more professional...

P.S. If you haven't seen it yet, check out his weekly show Epileptic Gaming, in my opinion the most entertaining video game show on the web: http://www.djwheat.tv/category/shows/epilepticgaming/

Wheat is the perfect professional commentator to go along with Day9, he might not have the BEST insight but man he asks the right questions that spectators of all levels might ask or would be interested to hear. He knows exactly what to do as a true professional shoutcaster. Loved it, and it was really an honor to finally meet him in person

Actually think the pair of them are just as good. I slightly prefer Wheat's charisma, both both have a great ability to run an event. They are never short for words and both know how to direct an agenda.

Actually kinda like them both with Day more than tastosis.

Day9 for the analytical stuff, DJ Wheat to talk it all together. Best commentator duo in my opinion.

yeah, this Q&A still commentary in the beginning of matches really provides the inside nessessary for an audience new to the game, and with days great answers, those two just gave the best performance of both duo´s. (NOT saying that JP wasnt great as well, but he was never sure what to say in the beginning of matches)
Later on day of course took over completly and rightfully so!

Agreed completely. I love JP, but just think that Wheat + Day[9] really had a great level of synergy.

Edit: Chill is absolutely hilarious when he casts too, but I don't know if it would be best for MLG because the audience would be laughing too hard to watch the game.

A big thanks to everyone who posted in this thread. I really appreciate it and it just makes me even more motivated to provide good content to the community.

There were several comments about, "you've definitely improved", and to me this is the best compliment that any caster can get.

I've covered many games in my 10 years as a commentator, and each game I cast presents a new challenge. Every game has a particular flow, cadence, and knowledge required to provide an entertaining yet informational spin on casting. For me this is something I take very seriously, and put alot of time into in order to provide the same quality of broadcasting that I would apply to any game/event. So to see the community recognize this is extremely satisfying.

Guest casting with the MLG team was a great experience and I look forward to doing it again at MLG Dallas.

Additionally, I'm UBER excited to broadcast the EG MSI Masters Cup for StarCraft 2 which will take place the weekend after BlizzCon, where Day[9] and I will goto the studio in Phoenix to do a live broadcast of the online games (top 8 I believe) over two days. I think it will be an awesome event featuring some amazing players and I'm sure you won't want to miss it. Additionally, Day[9] is going to be doing an interactive Daily with me that Sunday that I'm super stoked to be a part of.

Ultimately though... I just want to throw a thanks back to the entire community. Thanks for allowing me to share my passion for SC2 with the rest of you... whether it's through casting things like MLG, Weapon of Choice, or just being involved with the forums... I'm completely serious when I say that TL is the best community I've ever been a part of, and it's an honor to get such amazing feedback from all of you.

Here's to many years of StarCraft 2 and everything that comes with it!

I didn't have much background on WHEAT until I saw him at MLG, then I found him on twitter etc. I had NO IDEA that he didn't have much SC experience, he did such a good job throwing related questions to day[9] it made the cast really interesting. There was rarely any interruption of eachother during the cast, amazing job throughout.

Can't wait to see him cast at Dallas :D

Just found this thread but man, I really enjoy the djWHEAT+Day[9] combo. Day brings the deep analysis and very unique sense of humour while WHEAT is just so....professional! He's sooo smooth, well mannered, funny and to the point that he makes all his co-casters look good. Heck, I'm a big fan of the solo-shows, but when your presence makes Day[9] an even better caster, you deserve your own ego-boost thread on TL.

GG djWHEAT, I hope to see a lot more of you in the future, preferably alongside Day[9]
