Mouse Issues on Mac

Hello all,

I've been playing SC2 since WOL beta and throughout the years I've mainly played on Windows. However, I'm an avid Mac user and would love to figure out some of the weird issues that keep plaguing me in SC2 on OSX Mojave 10.14.5 (most up to date as of 5/31/2019).

I'm on a MBP 13" TouchBar with a 3.1 ghz core i5, 8 gb ram, Iris Pro Graphics--more than well enough to run SC2 at medium resolution on low graphics, I don't usually experience any visual frame rate lag.

What I do experience is the equivalent of mouse lag, where my mouse (Razer DeathAdder) just doesn't seem to keep up with what I'm doing. I've read numerous places that this is due to Apple's inherent 'mouse accel' which I've tried to compensate for with Razer Synapse, SteelSeries ExactMouse and even SteerMouse. No matter what I do, my mouse just isn't coherent: it lags when moving across the screen, if I'm trying to drag a box to select units, it sometimes skips and I lose a drag, or it jumps me across the screen. The closest I can describe it, without recording it in someway, is when you see someone in a FPS with a bad refresh rate, they sorta skip across the screen oddly and their sprite has no smooth movements. I've also tried other mice and had similar effects.

I've spent hours googling solutions, paid for SteerMouse, and I still can't figure out how to make this work. I should note, this only affects me IN SC2--I can play CS:GO or some of the old COD games/other shooters without any mouse issues.

Help!

What you are describing does indeed sound like mouse acceleration, which is on by default on Macs. You can actually completely disable mouse acceleration without installing any additional software. All you need to do is open Terminal (which is in the Utilities section of you Applications folder) or any other bash prompt, input the command below (you can copy/paste it into the terminal window), hit return/enter, and then do a restart (the OS doesn't disable acceleration until you do the restart or shutdown):

defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1

What this above prompt does is set the global preference (which is basically a setting your OS checks when it boots) for mouse acceleration/scaling to be completely disabled. Once this is done your mouse should feel almost identical to how it does in Windows, and this setting will be permanent*. If you ever want to turn the acceleration back on just use the same terminal command but with 1 instead of -1.

*One thing to note is that if you turn the acceleration off and then change the mouse settings in Preferences, it may re-enable mouse acceleration. To fix that, just repeat the process above. Basically, once you have acceleration disabled, just don't touch the mouse settings in Preferences and you'll be fine. In the past I used Razer Synapse to fine tune my mouse settings and it didn't cause any trouble with this acceleration setting. Hopefully that's still the case.

The command should disable mouse acceleration for all mice that you connect to the Mac (except the Magic Mouse, which is treated differently) , but won't turn off mouse acceleration for the track pad (which is good because the trackpad is designed around the acceleration and is much less usable without). I play SC2 on my Mac all the time and with this setting turned off, my mouse feels exactly the same as it does on Windows.

The reason you run into this in SC2 but not in some other games is because a lot of other games tend to have their own mouse settings that override the system settings, but if I remember right SC2 allows you to adjust sensitivity within the game's settings menu but it is still based off the system setting, which is why you are seeing the acceleration show up.

Hopefully this helps.

I tried using this command also, but will give it another go.

So I used the command and restarted (can't recall if I restarted after entering the command before) and while it seems to have made a slight improvement I'm still skipping ever so slightly. I really notice it when I'm trying to drag a box--almost feels like it doesn't want to perform the number of actions I'm trying to do...

Does the deathadder just suck?

I had the same issue with my Razer viper ultimate on my mac. Tried everything and eventually solved by unselecting "Disable operation system keyboard shortcut" option in mouse and keyboard in SC2 setup.
