Newegg don't have the new cards but the two R9 280X models on NCIX are in line with 7970 pricing.

Seems quite aggressive pricing, and reminds me of hyper 212 and hr-02 macho a lot

That 140mm HR-02 Macho look-alike definitely has a cheaper/worse fan:
- sleeve bearing vs ball/fluid dynamic
- 1100 ~ 1650 R.P.M. .. that will probably be pretty loud even at minimum specified PWM range.
- only 13 mm deep (that explains the high speed). They probably did this to reduce memory interference but slimmer fan = generally less air pressure AFAIK (hence the higher RPM). Macho has a better design here since the bulk of the heatsink is shifted "away" from typical memory locations, toward the "rear" of a typical case.

At only ~£8 more, I feel that the Macho is a much better buy for the reasons outlined above.

The fan on the HR-02 Macho is also just sleeve bearing, I think. Thermalright sells two kinds of fans. The ball-bearing fans are on the more expensive coolers, Archon, Silver Arrow. The True Spirit and Macho line gets the cheaper bearing.

TY-140 on HR-02 Macho is sleeve bearing; it should be a better fan than most you get with CPU coolers, but it's not nearly the best. The TY-141 and TY-147 use 2BB and are just different in color, while the high-speed TY-143 model also uses 2BB.

I don't really know and didn't check how consistent TPU's CPU cooler testing is, but:

I found where I've seen this curious idea about a slim fan for a CPU cooler: http://www.prolimatech.com/en/products/detail.asp?id=1906&subid=1908

So Prolimatech had a similar idea. It might not be as stupid as it seems to choose a slim fan? Or that slim fan those Rajintek guys used was the cheapest 140mm sized fan they could source.

With the R9 280X in particular, it looks like Nvidia may have to lower prices on GTX 770 especially and perhaps 760 as well.

r9 280x's came in here at ~£240

We've had 7970's cheaper for like a month. Recently, the Asus Directcu ii TOP card on ocuk for £227, it's still there, competing with the £350 4gb 770's. This release changes nothing in UK market, anyone buying a new card now wouldn't pick up a 280x, they'd want the asus top 7970

260x too. Everything here is WORSE than the price:performance we saw in the last few months, wow

Well that's because the ASUS top 7970 broke the UK market. It's a ridiculously good deal, I paid my Sapphire 7970 £268 . In France, that ASUS top 7970 is £341. It almost makes me cry to see such a high end card so damn cheap in the UK.

I feel that you don't get such good deals outside of the UK; the impression I got from reading a couple of reviews this morning was that the R9 280X was a pretty good deal.

We got a series of good deals in the UK, and in germany (gumbi talks about shipping from there a lot as stuff can work out notably cheaper) maybe other eu countries got shafted a bit. The £227 was ridiculous, but it's been up for quite a while now, not like the other stuff where they only put a deal on for like 50 or 100 cards

Assuming same/similar price:

HD7970 GHz's are better because they are higher clocked and have game bundles.

Regular HD7970 is slower but if it has the game bundle will be potentially better value if you are OK with the slight performance deficit.

With the new AMD cards coming out are prices expected to drop? I built my PC this summer with a 650ti so if I get a new card I will need a new PSU to go with it.

Right now I am thinking of grabbing a GTX760 for 269 CAD or a 7950 for 229 CAD. Though I will need more than my current 430w PSU. I think I'll need a 550w if I'm not mistaken.

Only have one slot for GPU so SLI or CrossFire isn't an option. Just wondering if I should wait a bit or if one of the two cards above is fine. Again, I don't mind waiting if price drops are expected in the next few months. I can probably play BF4 on medium once its released at 60fps+ I can run it at 50ish right now in the beta on medium even with all the optimisation and CPU spikes I have.

I found bf4 to be cpu limited below the kind of performance i'd want, kinda annoying

Bigger problem is the fact that if you dont have a hyperthreading processor you cant run it beyond low at the moment.

^That implies that you'd see higher minimum FPS on low. Not really the case, my time spent with frames taking longer than 10 or 15ms to render was right about equal on 720p vs 1080. That is, changing graphics settings didn't make my low performance better, it just meant that when i was having good performance, it'd be 170fps instead of 100fps or whatever, and both would dip below 60 a lot.

^Linked that 1-2 times before, but this kind of behaivour

650ti to 760 would be a bad upgrade, going 1 notch up on performance is usually pretty bad. Weakest i'd consider would be 7970/280x, assuming you have suitable cpu and are targeting 1920x1080

Alright, I'll wait for prices to change up a bit then since the 7970 is outside my price range right now. I just saw a lot of benchmarks saying I would be nearly doubling my performance with a 7970 since I don't have the BOOST version of the 650ti, just the plain old 1gb 650ti.

And My cpu is an i53570k, just hoping to see the release version get better for not terribly spiking and dropping frames on me :/

you at stock or oc?

And yea i hope they improve it a lot. First game i've seen to max oc 4770k+ht across 8 threads and still have so much time below 60fps because of CPU limits

Behind the scenes though i'm laughing at the guys planning to play this on xbox1 with less than 1/5'th of the CPU strengh. If they can optimize it to improve performance by even 50%, i'd consider it pretty terrible for an AAA release of one of the "best" engines we have on the PC. I mean, surely direct to metal coding isn't that big of a deal? If it were possible to make a jaguar APU perform half as well as an overclocked 4770k, we'd have people taking advantage of mantle-like API's on the PC, too. We can't be that many leagues away from pretty-close-to-perfect use of hardware

I'm OC to 4.2Ghz on the CPU. Right now I can't OC my GPU because the new beta drivers which lead to BF4 not crashing on load screen crash whenever I open the ASUS OC tool for my Video Card haha might try rolling back. I managed to get my GPU to play TombRaider on high with OC instead of medium with 70fps average. I can run BF3 very high as well so I was really surprised by BF4 tbh. And with the new AMD series coming out if those more in tune with PC parts knew of any price drops I could get in on the cheap prices like I did with the haswell switch and my ivybridge pricing.

Oh and atm my monitor is only 1600x900 I hope to get a new one within a year though for glorious 1080 I mainly play SC2 but BF is a lot of fun and I convinced an old friend to get it for PC. He does a lot of video rendering and editing so he has a very beefy machine and can handle it

How many Threads does BF4 use? If it's all 8 then turn off HT and test again. FC3 hates HT so it's reasonable to expect 'next gen' games to also?
Team Liquid needs more Terrans.

It uses 8 and scales upwards with HT, though that may be inflated averages at the cost of minimums. I didn't check

Hi all,

Sorry to be a bother, but I have a new gaming PC request. I've discovered over the course of the past week that I have very little beyond a fundamental knowledge of said components and would love some help on selecting parts. And education or advice would be appreciated.

Also, this:
What is your budget?
Comfortably around 2500, could go up to 3500 if there is vast improvements to be had
What is your monitor's native resolution?
1680x1050 (Looking to upgrade this additionally)
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
All kinds, from shooters, to adventures, to Starcraft, of course.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Have the possibility of it being commandeered by the girlfriend for work related purposes, such as graphic design and various editing work.
Do you intend to overclock?
Maybe? I'm very new at this and rather risk adverse so...
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
Possibly if it is beneficial, or to add an additional GPU later as finances allow.
Do you need an operating system?
Indeed.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
I was wishing to upgrade my monitor, and yes as part of the budget, RE: price cushion.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
Negative, as long as they're serviceable.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
United States.
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Nope.
Sorry about the wall of text guys. Thanks in advanced!

No streaming? Graphic design is mostly dependant on CPU unless I'm mistaken (could be GPU dependant but with the graphics card of a gaming system it shouldn't be a problem). It doesn't seem like you're going to do more than one CPU intensive activity at a time though.

Regardless, $2500 is a lot more than you'll need to spend on the computer that you're describing (though I guess monitor and OS are relatively expensive..). With a budget such as this one, overclocking is recommended. You'll get more out of your computer and you'll increase its effective lifespan. Overclocking, if done correctly, isn't really risky. There are guides out there, either check the OP of this thread or go to overclock.net.

You've talked about a possible monitor upgrade so I'm going to assume that we're building this for a single 1080p monitor.

All that said, here's something I might recommend (to be judged by others):

Base Price: $1228
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1MMYE

CPU - i5-4670k, $240:
Standard go-to for a powerful gaming build. As said before, you won't be doing more than one CPU intensive activity at a time (such as streaming games; not to say that this processor can't stream). I'm not sure what graphic design entails for a system. I think hyperthreading might be useful for that but I don't think it's mandatory. You aren't streaming or encoding anyway, so really this should do. Read more about hyperthreading: http://www.overclock.net/a/hyperthreading-explained

Motherboard - Gigabyte Z87X-D3H, $140:
As I said before, you're better off overclocking. It's not that hard to do and the benefits are really nice, especially if you're going to spend more than $800 on a computer. This motherboard is great for overclocking. It also supports Crossfire if you so wish (more on that when we get to the GPU). Overall a nice motherboard that everyone seems to agree is one of the best.

CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-U12S, $70:
Everyone says good things about this cooler. Why not?

RAM - geIL Evo, $64:
Cheapest DDR3-1600 RAM I could find for 2x4 Gb. It's just RAM.

SSD - Samsung 840 Series 250 Gb, $159:
If you have the funds... why not? It's a great addition to any PC. Install your OS and your most used programs on this drive and you're set. Fast boot times, all that good jazz.

HD - Seagate Barracuda 2 TB, $90:
$90 for 2 TB seems a nice deal.

GPU - ASUS 7970 3Gb, $310:
7970 is an awesome card, a go to in terms of gaming performance. With this card you should be able to max almost any game at 1080p. ASUS make good, quiet heatsinks.

Case - Fractal Design Define R4, $90:
I've only heard good things about this case, Fractal Design are known for making great cases in general. This case isn't too big, isn't too expensive and really in your shoes I would probably be getting this case.

PSU - XFX Core 550W, $55:
This PSU will be more than enough if you're sticking to a single GPU build. However, with the budget you described, you may be able to get something more beefy than just a single 7970. In which case you'll be needing a more powerful PSU.

DVD Drive, $15:
Maybe you want to read DVDs.

Anyway, back to the budget question. If your budget is really that high and you're really looking for absolute best performance, then you have a couple more options.

First, if you're willing to Crossfire, you can get two 7970s. This will cost $620 and it will outperform the GTX 780 which is priced at $650. However, if you're going with such heavy GPUs, then you'll need more than a 550W PSU. For Crossfired 7970s and a mildly overclocked 4670k, you'll probably need over 750W (800W or 850W is probably better). If you're going to go with a mildly overclocked 4670k and "just" a 780, then you could probably use a 600W PSU.

A 7970 will run everything except the absolute most demanding games at max settings at 1080p.
A 780 will run any game at 1080 at max settings.
Crossfired 7970s will run any game at 1080 at max settings.

780 and 2x7970 is more about higher resolutions than 1080 (dual or triple monitor set-ups).

Trading the i5-4670k for an i7-4770k shouldn't change too much in terms of power draw, so that option is available if you need it.

If you need to find a good quality PSU without reading a lot of reviews: http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies

For OS, it's up to you. For monitor, there's a monitor thread on TL.

Power draw of GPU's depends heavily what you're doing with them, in terms of clocks/oc etc. I wouldn't hesitate to put a stock power limit 780 + max oc haswell quad on a capstone 450 for example, but gk110 cards (780, titan, maybe a 770ti) can scale aggressively in power usage and performance if you look to push them (they're clocked low at stock)

I'm not sure of power usage of 7970's at stock/1000mhz vs high OC, but there should be a sizable gap there

Ah that's pretty interesting thanks for the head's up, didn't realize there was such a discrepancy.
