Good noise levels on the Asus R9-280X. 99th percentile numbers (TR-review) are quite nice too. And now the wait for the 290-nonX numbers haha.
On that note - Anandtech's new "AMD Center" is hilariously gaudy looking. Seems like there are still some placeholders left-in-place.

Yeah the prices are normal. It just felt expensive considering overall system price. :p
Edit: New R9 cards look pretty nice.
With the R9 280X in particular, it looks like Nvidia may have to lower prices on GTX 770 especially and perhaps 760 as well. R9 280X seems really damn cost efficient.

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade My computer is currently below average for a gaming PC if that, since I have a pretty limited budget I was wondering if it would be possible to just upgrade it in steps starting with the motherboard/CPU along with the necessary heatsink/power supply to support it and then using the other "stuff' I have right now on my computer and then build from there as I get more money later down the line. I feel like my processor is the most limiting thing I have right now, although my whole build is pretty weak anyways. I'm assuming that I'll need a new motherboard because an good CPU upgrades probably aren't compatible with my current one.
What is your budget $200~300 currently is my budget.
What country will you be buying your parts in? USA
Brand preferences I'd like an i5 since from what I understand it's a pretty solid processor and will last me awhile, just like how mine managed to last me the last 5 years. You'll need a new motherboard and new memory as well for a core i5. If you want an overclockable setup than that would be out of your budget but $300 would barely be enough for a non-overclockable setup (i5 ~$190, H81 ~$60, 4GB RAM ~$40). It'd be better just to save up a bit more money.
So I'd need 8GB ram total? And I'm guessing I'd need a new power supply and heatsink too? If I had a budget of $700 it'd be doable then right?
|
You don't need 8GB of RAM but your current RAM is DDR2 which is not used anymore so you need to buy new DDR3 RAM.
You could re-use your current power supply if it's a good one. You could re-use your heatsink as well provided the manufacturer provides you with the mounting bracket for LGA1150.
Yes, $700 would easily get you all that.
|
You have to replace your DDR2 with DDR3, your ram is useless in an upgrade.
|
R9 270X is a joke. It's a 7870 with a boost clock and slightly faster memory and it's $20 more expensive...The only thing that would make it worth while is if it has a higher voltage limit.

After some looking around on the internet I found a pre-built PC. I know that building my PC parts are almost always better but this build looks good imo.
For 540 euros I can get the following setup:
- Processor: Intel Core i5-4570S 2.9GHz - Motherboard: Asus B85M-G - Memory: 8GB Kingston HyperX 1600MHz DDR3 - Hard drive: 1TB 7200 rpm (unknown brand) - Video card: nVidia GeForce GTX650 2GB DDR5 (unknown brand) - Case: Cooler Master Elite Knight - Power supply: Cooler Master 500W
Is that i5-4570S any better than the i3-4130 what Incognoto suggested for me? I also don't like that there are so many components which manufacturers are unknown.
|
Yes but it's terrible.
S means Slow. Kingston RAM means 1.65v junk. 2GB GTX 650 is laughable. Elite is Cooler Master terms means cheap. unknown PSU means have fun when it blows up.

My budget is around 500 euros so I can't really get any better video card. I mostly play sc2 and I think I don't really need a good video card. I thought the same about the processor and checked some benchmarks and that i3-4130 always did better than this i5-4570S. I didn't know that Kingston RAM is junk and am very surprised to hear that, I always though that they are prestigious brand among memories. Thx for the response, I will stick to Incognoto's build.

My power supply is an Antec 650w ATX12V don't know if that'll be enough since I'm planning on upgrading my video card later on too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to replace my heatsink because right now the cooling on my computer is really bad I get into the 70C+'s really easily. So to sum it up it'd be: i5, 4GB of DDR3 Ram, H81 Motherboard, new heatsink, maybe power supply, and would I be able to reuse my current case, a Cooler Master Elite 330U, or would I be better off getting a new one?

r9 280x's came in here at ~£240
We've had 7970's cheaper for like a month. Recently, the Asus Directcu ii TOP card on ocuk for £227, it's still there, competing with the £350 4gb 770's. This release changes nothing in UK market, anyone buying a new card now wouldn't pick up a 280x, they'd want the asus top 7970
260x too. Everything here is WORSE than the price:performance we saw in the last few months, wow

If it happens i'd be surprised ...HD 7000 has been heavily discounted for over a month to clear stock. Also you are paying extra to be an early adopter of a new card. Seriously just wait a month, R9 280X prices will drop a fair bit.

I think Europe always gets screwed on pricing lol

Drop below. If you look at the history of any AMD card they drop hard in price after a few months.
