Hey guys

This is my computer specs: http://puu.sh/5AnsA.png

I'd like to know why my in-game fps drop so heavily when I stream. I'm using OBS with these settings:

http://puu.sh/5AnCM.png
http://puu.sh/5AnDv.png
http://puu.sh/5AnEb.png
http://puu.sh/5AnEb.png
http://puu.sh/5AnGK.png

The FPS in my games drops considerably. As an example, if I try to stream DotA2, my in game FPS will drop to 18-40 and the game is pretty much unplayable.

I'm asking this because I see people with similar specs that stream perfectly. Take Merlini for example, he streams at 1200p. He has the same VGA as I have and his CPU has a little bit more clock than mine (considering mine @3.9GHZ duo to turbo mode). Why is his stream so perfect and his in game frames never drop, while mine is total garbage?

And I'm not asking this as a complaint, I'm honestly curious about what's happening, I'd love to understand what's going on instead of just getting a "do this" answer. What might be my bottleneck? What am I doing wrong and why is that wrong?

I'm aware that my configuration isn't optimal to get a crispy beautiful stream, but that's not my point here. My point is to know why my games are affected so much when I stream!

Thanks in advance!

Also, half your framerate or resolution (1080p30 or 720p60)

1080p60 is very extreme to start out with on stock CPU.

I'd consider it on a high clocked 4770k or 3930k/4930k, but they're much better than a stock 3770k* (4770k is haswell, which has significant performance-per-clock improvements for x264 video encoding as well as potentially 25% higher clockspeed with oc ((so 1.4x performance plausible)), the other two are sandy/ivy bridge with six cores)

*which is 3.7ghz with four cores loaded

To be honest, i wouldn't >want< a 1080p60 stream unless i had twice that bitrate, and even then i'd probably go 1080p48 even with enough cpu power

I'm honestly curious about what's happening, I'd love to understand what's going on instead of just getting a "do this" answer.

Open task manager performance tab, set graph update speed to fast in one of the options at the top, run 1080p60 stream, tab into game, drag the camera around fast etc for 5-10 seconds, then tab out and look at cpu load.

Also a possibility you're not using optimal setup for capturing game (game capture, not window/monitor capture) which would blow up to affecting performance in a massive negative way with resolution and FPS too

Thank you very much for the quick answers, I really appreciate it!

I saw heavy load on my processor when checking in task manager. Game FPS is ok-ish if I'm only streaming. It's almost unplayable while previewing the stream on twitch's dashboard, CPU's load goes crazy then.

I tested other resolution:fps settings and it got a bit better, but not considerably. I had some optimization to do according to OBS analyzer, but nothing major I think,

I have a trip planned to the US next january and since I want to stream while browsing youtube, other streams, using skype, etc, etc, I will just buy a 4770k. That would probably solve most of my problems, right?

Also, how important is a decent motherboard when streaming? A lot? Not at all important? Should I just get a good mobo for overclocking and I'll be fine?

Thanks again

Don't preview your stream while you're streaming, *especially* a 1080p60 stream. Just peek at it to make sure your stream looks okay, then hide/pause it. Leaving it open is a waste of resources.

Post a log here so we can look through it with you. Your settings seem fine, aside from 1080p60 (that's 1080p resolution, 60fps) -- try 720p60 or 1080p30, or get fancy with something like 864p48. 1080p60 is just too much.

You didn't say what capture method you're using though. If you're using Monitor Capture, that's probably your biggest problem. Unless you're on Windows 8, Monitor Capture will slow you down big time. Make sure you're using Game Capture or Window Capture (Window Capture only works if the game is in windowed/borderless mode, not fullscreen).

You definitely don't NEED a 4770k, you just need to fix a few things (Monitor Capture on W7 + stream preview in the background + 1080p60 encoding = big time slowdowns. Hell, just ONE of those things can cause performance issues). I have a 2600k and I have no performance issues while streaming pretty demanding games (granted, I'm moderately overclocked at 4.3GHz).

Overclocking would help with streaming if you have the mobo and CPU cooling to handle it. Either way, you shouldn't consider spending more money until you're sure you've exhausted all other options.

Wrong settings will reduce you to unplayability on any system, you can stream great w/ even a stock 3770k

Also, how important is a decent motherboard when streaming? A lot? Not at all important? Should I just get a good mobo for overclocking and I'll be fine?

If you were to buy, z87x-d3h is my go-to recommend (along with high end cooling if you even consider i7 over i5 price/performance wise, especially because hyperthreading = significantly more heat)

Strong board at low pricepoint, and i like gigabytes implementation of adaptive voltage the best. Wouldn't reccomend buying unless you just have a ton of money and want to have fun overclocking as a hobby, though (going into overclocking x58/z87 with no idea what you're doing it not the most time efficient or fun thing for some people, but if you're like me, you'd love it)

Hmm. Tried streaming some KSP. Thiswas the result.
(there's a much shorter, second try here

Just wondering about the quality - there were 0 dropped frames according to OBS in both cases. No mic audio on either video, and if you enjoy explosions, I produce a lot of them. Just was wondering about the graphical quality.

You might be able to improve the quality, but that depends on your system/internet specs and your OBS settings.

In theory, I have 5 Mbps up. I say theory, because it's the US and Cox. I'll have to look at the settings and see what's workable.

Remove monitor capture and window capture and only use game capture. Game capture won't show anything but the selected game, it's literally impossible for it to do so.

Hi got a small issue I could use some help with. Basically Im trying to stream and maybe around every 30 sec the stream will stop and load for a few seconds and then continue like nothing. Anyone know what could be wrong? I'm on a 100/100 connection so it shouldn't be a problem. I ran the OBS Log Analyzer and I got no errors to fix. I tried to downscale my resolution aswell but it didn't help at all.

If you experience problems watching your stream, it's likely lag on Twitch's end, there isn't anything you can do. As long as the log analyzer says you aren't dropping frames you should be fine.

Hmm what do you mean? I can watch other people stream fine without that random hiccup. I ran the analyzer with the text log is there a way to run it while you stream to check for frame drops or?

Maybe Im on some shitty server since I'm not a partner or something? Seems odd...

I've been having lots of lagg on friends streams this past week, and some of them lagg when I stream as well. I think it's something that's up with Twitch atm with non-partner streams since like AGDQ or partnered sc2 streams work fine.
