Should I upgrade to a i5 2500k or wait for the new generation or whatever?

and can someone recommend me a motherboard, one that I can overclock and that is compatible with the new processors? So I won't have to get a new mobo when I upgrade in a year.

What? You need a 2500k or 3570k or another LGA1155 processor for a new motherboard... you can't just put your old 1156 or 775 processor in it -_-

I worded my post pretty poorly,

I am ordering a i5 2500k or a i7 2600k in a couple days
I need somebody to recommend me a lga 1155 motherboard that I can overclock, and if possible, upgrade to the new processor generation (Ivy Bridge or w/e) in a year or so. (not even sure if this is possible)

There is no reason to upgrade from Sandybridge to Ivybridge unless you need PCI-E 3.0 (which you don't). Haswell is on LGA1150.

not likely, the newer (than ivybridge) processor will be on a new socket.

Thanks for the quick responses. So this is what i'm thinking,
i5 2500k (newegg)

Cooler Master Hyper 212 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

And should I get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271 or should I get something else?

You can get the Pro3 or the Extreme3 if you're doing SLI / CrossfireX.

I know on the Ivybridge/Sandybridge you should leave the blck largely untouched when OC'ing, but on all the images on forums I see it slightly higher 100.04 or 100.14 or something like that? What does that achieve?

Different chips sometimes come with slightly different default baseclocks from what I've seen. Any baseclock that is +/- 0.2 likely just came like that by default, but you can generally overclock by a couple of full points (~103 or so) depending on your cpu*, however this is rather pointless (exception being if you are at the multiplier wall, I've seen it done before o_0).

* As in mileage may vary, I was referring to sandy bridge specifically, not various cpu architectures.

In following PC setup:
-3 GB RAM
-Radeon 6790 , 1 GB RAM
-Core2Duo E7500 @ 2,93 GHz

Is this processor bottleneck of the configuration? What settings should this configuration be able to run @ 1920x1080? What about 3x3 team game? What do you think? Thanks.
Reality hits you hard bro.

Yeah. That graphics card can bog you down if your settings are very high and tons of effects are happening on screen but the CPU is the main issue for extremely large battles.

Depends on the case, ambient temp, and your individual CPU, but the correct answer is "don't OC with that stupid piece of shit".

I did 4 gHz with a heavy undervolt at 65C max with prime on a hot day, which is only a noticeable improvement for multithreaded applications, which are few, as turbo goes up to 3,7 gHz afaik with single thread loading. My hyper 212 only allowed me to get up to 4.5 with the same temps with a quite a good voltage lottery, so it may not be that shit (the stock cooler I mean).

Suggestion: Spend $25 on a cooler.

Old computer RAM compatibility question. So my work has an old compaq presario with only 512mb of RAM and it runs super slow, I suggested they add some RAM to speed it up and they asked me to see how much it would cost. I went to the crucial compatibility machine and it recommended PC3200 DDR 400 RAM.

However, when looking on newegg, all the 2x1gb kits of this type are really expensive! Is the issue that there isn't much of this older 184 pin RAM around, so they can ask for more money? Any other places to look for it?

You're better off upgrading to H61, G620, and 4GB DDR3 1333. Huge performance gain, under $200.

And yes, obsolete parts are expensive due to supply and demand. Or lack of both, really.

Mind you, that's if you can con them into making the machine all around not suck as bad, instead of just sucking slightly less.

Are you actually sure that it's DDR? If that's as old as I think it is, it could very well use SDR SDRAM. It was pretty common for pre-built PCs in the early 2000s as it was a cheaper, though slower, alternative to DDR. Check if the dimm has 2 notches on the bottom, if so it's not DDR.

The http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371035 500w is more expensive than the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371044 650w psu. I am a complete novice when it comes to hardware so I was wondering why would people buy the 500w PSU? Does the 650W psu still consume the full 650W even when the computer only needs say 500W (i.e. power supply is underutilized). Also, if I know my system will need about 500W of power, is it a good idea to buy a 650W supply for more upgrade leeway in the future or is it bad to have a PSU that is much higher than what you actually need?

It's a sale thing, Antec or New Egg may have overstock and need to get rid of some of the EA-650 models. You can see the MSRP on Antec's site for the models, and the 650 is usually $10 more.

Does the 650W psu still consume the full 650W even when the computer only needs say 500W (i.e. power supply is underutilized).

No. Antec actually reports the efficiency of the EA-650 model as about 5% higher, meaning it would theoretically use less power.

Without knowing your system specs, I can't speak to how much power you actually need, but 500 is usually sufficient. If you are actually using near to 500 and are adding more hardware in the future, then I would definetly say buy a larger one.

But in this case, it's pretty moot since both are the same price. Go for the 650.

Will an i5-2430M bottleneck an AMD Radeon 7690M graphics card?

Also based off of these specs and that the laptop has 8GB of RAM, would the laptop be able to run SC2 well at low settings?

Edit: ^at 1366x768 resolution

additionally here is the laptop I am referring to: https://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cart_detail.do?pageLink=true&bvLoadCart=1&action=add&disp_msg=0
