Hey guys, I've been surfing around the forums here looking for advice on getting a new mouse. From what I've gathered, two relatively inexpensive and well-performing mice are the Razer Deathadder and the Logitech MX518. The logitech has lower dpi (400-1600) compared to the 3500 of the Deathadder but I've also heard that anything more than 1800 can actually be troublesome for RTS. I'd love to get everyone's opinion because I don't have too much knowledge on the topic myself. Thanks!

I had deathadder before and now I have mx518. Deathadder might be good but the key wasn't functioning right after like 1 years of use and mx518 has been really great and I believe that it is cheaper also. You don't need the highest dpi. I use only like 800 with windows sensitivity on 6 notch and that is decent for me. Not many people are going to use full 3500dpi and have like window sensitivity on 1notch.

i know this isnt in the selection, but i want you to consider getting razer habu. i was once debating between the deathadder and habu. they are similar in shape and size so it was pretty hard. i got habu and glad i did. i have only heard bad things about the deathadder breaking or stop working after 6 months to a year. ive had habu for 3 years now and it works great still(basicly like new). altho i dont know anything about the other mouse, mx518, i think u should do some research on the habu instead of deathadder.
its aslo very customizable, as you can set your mouse specs however you want with a program that comes with the habu. out of 10, i rate the habu a 36

Ive had the deathadder for about 9 months now and I really love the mouse. I would definitely recommend it. It feels great on my hand and the clicking sensitivity feels great. I cant say much about the logitech though

Your mileage may vary. I have personally used a deathadder 1st gen for 3 years and counting now, but I have also heard stories of them breaking within 6 months. I guess it depends on how well you take care of it / if you are really rough with it, etc. Mine has only needed replacement mouse feet in those three years of intensive use.

Also, do you only play SC2 or also other stuff? For me, the Deathadder was the obvious choice because there is (or at least was) no other mouse with as high a malfunction- and perfect control speeds as the DA. It was important because I play arena shooters as well (Warsow, Quake, UT), and you need *very* fast mouse movements if you play those games on low sensitivity settings. Most mice would already start skipping or glitching at the speeds you play Quake at - including the MX518.

Also, I couldn't stand the hard plastic feel of the 518. The shape was decent, but the material really was a dealbreaker. It feels cold and uncomfortable, because I tend to get clammy hands when playing.

--
Really though, you can't go wrong with either mouse. The MX518 is more dependable I guess, but the Deathadder is the better performing mouse. Decide for yourself if you need that extra performance or are really rough with your mouse while playing (slamming it around on the mousepad, etc).

HOWEVER, and I know you didn't ask about this: you really should just pick the mouse that fits your playstyle/hand best. Deathadder is a mouse that is perfectly suited for palm grip (putting your entire hand+palm on the mouse, moving from wrist/arm), while it is just a tad too large to be used as claw grip (using your fingers to push the mouse around, wrist is down on the mousepad).

The MX518 is better suited to this claw-style. Just try one of them out in a store near you and see how it feels.

Deathadder always worked wonders for me.. I was never a fan of the logitch mice.. found them kind of hard to click.

Thats just my two sense.. The main thing you wanna do is try them out. At least get a feel for them. A retail store like bestbuy may have ones out on display so you can determine if you would be able to use it comfortably or not.

I'm a little biased as a left hander, but the DeathAdder left hand edition is amazing, I'd assume the right handed version is the same. Really nice standard size, back isn't too high, feels natural in medium/large hands like my own.

I was about to write yet another rant about how people seem to be unable to use the search function to wade through the million mouse threads on this board, but then I realized it's useless. You won't check again after this thread has done what it's there for and others like you won't either (hence the recurrence of this issue again and again and again).

So instead, I'll just comment on both mouse models and urge you to use the search function for future queries. For starters, check this thread which compares the Deathadder to the Logitech G5 and is basically the same, including me ranting about people not using the search function.

Most important piece of advice:

Try to get your hands on both of the mice (literally, i.e. check with a retailer) before buying one. The "feel" of a mouse is much more important than price, customization, drivers etc can ever be. Because if you're not comfortable with it, nothing else will make up for it.

Deathadder vs. MX18

Make sure you know exactly what you want from a mouse. Precision? Should it be cheap? Macro controls? Customization? Ergonomic design? Light/Heavy/Customizable weigth? There's a ton of things to consider, so study the way you're currently using your mouse and find answers. Then check professional reviews (do not rely on amateur reviews á la "the Deathadder is the greatest mouse evar I'm so happy with it!!!11")

Make sure you know how you hold your mouse. In the thread I linked and elsewhere on the web you'll find information about palm, claw, finger grip techniques. Check which one it is you're using, and judge if you'll be able to handle either mouse with it. The Deathadder for example sucks for claw grip, but is a perfect palm grip mouse.

Misconceptions:

- DPI settings aren't troublesome. You can either get used to higher DPI settings or you can throttle the value with the software/drivers. Don't worry about 3500 DPI messing up your control, won't happen

My personal recommendation:

If you're unsure, get the MX518. It's lighter, cheaper, is known to have less technical issues than the various Deathadder models and it's shape makes it better to use with other techniques than palm grip.

Best mouse for you would be dependent on your grip and comfort.

Are you a palm/claw gripper? Do you have large hands? Then either the DeathAdder or MX518 would be great for you. The DPI doesn't really matter, 1600 DPI and 1800 DPI is negligible when it comes to Starcraft II.

For me personally, I play at 1800 DPI as 3500 is way too sensitive for my tastes on my DeathAdder. I'm also a claw gripper and the DeathAdder fits me well, despite the concerns that another mouse may be better suited for claw grippers such as myself.

If you're a fingertip gripper, you might want to look elsewhere for a smaller and lighter mouse. Something like the Razer Salmosa would be perfect for Starcraft II. It's compact, light, and an overall great mouse.

Thanks for all the input! In response to shockk, I did use the search function to learn about the individual mice, but I couldn't find anything comparing specifically the two that I was looking for and was hoping to get input from those who have had experience with them via this thread.

@sawedust, I did have a slight concern that as nice as the deathadder is, it might not fit well with my claw grip as it seems to be more of a palm grip mouse, but it's nice to know that you have found it works even with that grip.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed!

I have both, and prefer the deathadder. My MX518 is about 6 years old though so that may affect it.

I've used both mice pretty extensively and I have to give the edge to the Deathadder. After some use my right click would often stick on my MX518 and I've yet to have any problems with my Deathadder other than the terrible drivers.

It's very easy to change the DPI with or without drivers for both mice but just because a mouse can use that DPI, i.e 3500 doesn't mean you have to use it. Just pick the DPI that you feel comfortable with. Also, the new all black Deathadder is really slick looking.

MX518 is using a very old optical sensor, deathadder is using 3g infrared optical sensor. No comparison in accuracy. I've personally used both (518 a long time ago before my deathadder). the deathadder is by far the more superior mouse, and i've had to return 5 or 6 logitech mice already. Deathadder and the 518 are almost the same size (length and width, with the 518 having more height). Go with the deathadder. On the fly sensitivity switching is the most retarded gimmick I have ever seen with a gaming centric periphreal. You do not want to be changing you sensitivity at all, unless it's to achieve some goal (ie faster sensitivity to be quicker but by incrimental amounts not to sacrifice accuracy). From a competetive standpoint, if my sensitivity is changed I almost dont even want to play the game. Must be hell at tournaments where you cannot bring your own hardware, or if they do not allow you to install drivers (happened to me once, was bs)

Had an mx510 for about 5 years until it finally broke, and now a deathadder for about 4 years. They're both great mice, and actually pretty similar enough that if you like either one you will like both. Really can't go wrong with either one.

The DPI will mostly depend on what resolution you play the game at.

If you run the game at the lowest resolution possible, you will not need high DPI. If you run the game at a very high (2MegaPixel+) resolution, you would probably want high DPI.

Aside from that, there's also persnoal sensitivity preference. I am running at 1600x1200, which is quite high resolution, and my mouse's maximum sensitivity of 2000 DPI barely does/doesn't cut it for me. I can live with 2000 DPI, but it's just too low for me.

I would say if you just want a very basic mouse with improved DPI, go for the deathadder — mx518 seems too low DPI for now-a-days unless you still run programs and games at low resolution, and continue to plan on doing so for the entire time you have the mouse for.

The right button on my DeathAdder died after about 10 months. Now I have a gripless G9X and I couldn't be happier (It's so tiny and light). The DA was okay, though it did feel quite cheap to me. Too much light plastic. And I also wasn't a fan of the glossy plastic along where the side buttons were, it was harder to grip and built up grime way faster than matte finished plastic. Razer's drivers and settings menues were also much lower quality than Setpoint. Though you can do a lot of customizing with either.

i got the MX518 for like... 37 bucks and im getting a $15 mail in rebate, so its all cool for me. i actualy prefer the MX518 because of its lower profile and its 10 bucks cheaper before mail in rebate. Both are opticals, and both are from trusty companies (ok maybe not razer, but their good mice are good) and yeah i totaly agree on what all the other ppl say, try out the mouse shape. If your friends dont have this mouse, then go to a best buy or frys and try out the mice.

MX518 cause:
BIG, BIG TEFLON FEET LOL
The Dpi button is really helpful for me, cause im used to it (switched from lachesis).
1800DPI is all you need
So...So.... inexpensive.
you dont need flashy lights on the top of the mouse, it just matters whats on the inside and the feel of it.

Go for MX518 if you feel guilty for spending on a mouse over 50 bucks. Oh, and theres no rubber coating on top, its on the sides where you need it.
Go for Deathadder if you like flashy lights and nice software customization. Rubberized coating on top never hurts, but its 10 bucks more expensive.

I've had the Mx518 for about 4 years there wasn't any specific reason i got the MX518 it was relatively cheap for a gaming mouse and i've been more than happy with it. Also no technical issues with the mouse, it got a great back and forward function key that makes web browsing real easy.
Plays against every MU with nexus first.

I have the MX518 and have been using it for 2+ years, nothing wrong with it yet. I've used the DA before and I have to say it feels really good to hold.

The feel is most important. The DPI isn't a problem as either mice is good enough for SC2 and FPS games.

The only thing about the MX518 is that it feels most comfortable with the palm grip. Your middle finger goes on the mouse wheel and your ring finger on the right mouse button. Any other grip feels weird on it but I've grown used to it. I don't think the DA has this problem.

I recently (2 months ago) bought a Deathadder, and it's been really great for sc2; not only does it feel good in your hand, but it is FAST and is customisable without having too many buttons. The extra ones on the side are unobtrusive if you don't use them like me.

Imo it depends on your personal preference and also how you hold your mouse.

Personally I think it's a bad decision going with a DeathAdder / MX518 if your the gamer who likes to "claw" your mouse (coming from a gamer who has 1+ years experience with both). I liked both mice a LOT while I had them, but found out that the Razer Diamondback 3G was much better for me, because of it's light weight, ergonomics suited for a "claw" gamer, and high dpi so I can maintain the sensitivity that I want while maintaining a 1:1 ratio pixel movement, so no need to fuck up mouse movement with software

The only "downside" is that the driver software doesn't allow you to change the polling rate, but it doesn't really matter since you can do so by other means.

Just remember to turn off mouse acceleration whatever mouse you go with. Additional reading: http://purehighspeed.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83
Oh and day9 uses the Diamondback aswell :D

I have to admit, coming from a Logitech Mini Optical (which essentially forced me to go fingertip despite my lifelong preference for claw) I had a very difficult time adjusting to the size and weight of the DeathAdder.

But once I got used to it, I found the mouse to be a lot more accurate and smoother than my LMO was. If I had the money I'd probably try out a Salmosa or Abyssus as they would probably be better for me and my style.

As the majority have stated, the MX518 and DeathAdder are two of the most highly recommended gaming mice. Choose whatever is more comfortable for you!

I like the deathadder, perfect size and excellent clicking..
Nice drivers too.
Might wanna change the scroll wheel speed like RIGHT down to minimum though. I had to.
I've dropped this thing like.. 30 times now and it still works perfectly.

I cant comment on the MX518 but I did just get a deathadder a couple weeks ago and it is fan-freakin'-tastic. I'm heavily contemplating getting one for work simply because I've gotten used to the deathadder at home and now my work mouse feels like shit.

I think it's really just up to preference and what you are used to for the feel of mouse, I used an MX518 for about 5 years until the left click stopped worked well, had a razer mouse already as a backup but just couldn't get used to it, so I got a new MX518 instead.

I had an MX518 for years then moved to the mx1000. That died on me yesterday so I bought the deathadder and the blackwidow keyboard.

GREAT PURCHASES! I grinded out 600 ladder points last night after finally getting used to the new keyboard.

Depends at what you are used to. I play at around 3-3.5k dpi. When I switched to to a xai I had to turn down dpi to 3.5k to get comfortable. There's no way I'm going back to 1.6k dpi mouse though

Personal experience with the DeathAdder 3500. Amazing mouse. I love it. In all honesty, it's by far the best mouse I've ever owned. Best part, is that it's super easy to clean because it has no weird crevaces all over it like some mice do.

Unfortunately however, it died last week while installing a driver for another device. It's not even a year old yet . I called Razer and they said they would be more than happy to RMA it, but I needed to email them a proof of purchase, which I can't seem to find.

In other words, DeathAdder, great mouse, but make sure you keep your receipt, and preferably, unplug it when installing drivers lol.

I've used both for a very long time and they are both sick, but deathadder breaks a little bit quicker
you dont need over 1600 dpi anyway btw, so dont let that be the deciding factor

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to maximize DPI and then lower windows sensitivity as it is supposed to be a modifier of some sorts. Sort of like how you don't take a picture in low resolution as opposed to taking a picture in highest resolution and lowering the size to what you want.

This is just what I've heard and going off that I do 5600 DPI with windows notch on 1 and game sensitivity on like 15. I slowed it down a lot since Greg convinced me you don't need to have the highest possible sensitivity to play.

I have the Deathadder and Mx518, the deathadder feels to big, and the mx518 feels too puffy. In the end its all personal preference, but i ended up with the steelxeries xai.

Funny, I had exactly that same issue two weeks ago, actually, I'm opening my new 3500 dpi deathadder in this precize moment.
As a mouse, it's really precize, I saw an old review in this webpage and that convinced me... however, it's kind of large and heavy (compared to your average cheap desktop mouse)... if you have palm grip (rest you hand over the mouse) this mouse is great amd really confortable... about the dpi, it's true that a really high number is just overkill, but it depends on the size of your screen, if you've never used a high dpi mouse (fast), you don't really need that...

@sawedust, I did have a slight concern that as nice as the deathadder is, it might not fit well with my claw grip as it seems to be more of a palm grip mouse, but it's nice to know that you have found it works even with that grip.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed!

Omg T.T me too i came from a LMO (greastest mouse ever) using a fingertip grip, but then the sensitivity is just too low for SC2 ( cuz i have a 1680X1050 screen), i mean i wouldnt mind going at it if it was a 1280 screen, but still, i love it.
Razer mice feels really, really expensive even though its relatively good in price =D

Same issue, 1680x1050 screen. Mouse wasn't as accurate as I'd hoped it would be.

However in the pro player mouse/keyboard guide looks like a lot of players are still going strong with their LMO. Even Boxer played with his LMO until he got the Razer deal, where he switched to the DeathAdder.

So far I have no complaints about my DeathAdder as opposed to many others who have that stigma about Razer gear. Everything is working absolutely fine and I'm loving it.
