So I would be interested in hearing your suggestions for components. So consider this as low priority. + Show Spoiler +What is your budget?
Budget 1000€ +/- 100€. preferably under 1k, but if need be, I can go to the MAXIMUM of 1100.
What is your resolution?
a single 1920x1080 screen for gaming. For desktop stuff and internet browsing I am going to be using dual screens (currently own one, will get another one -- not included in the budget).
What are you using it for?
Gaming (SC2, Minecraft, possibly Diablo 3, Tribes:Ascend, such. Modern games in general.) Watching movies, photoshop, and possibly some streaming.
What is your upgrade cycle?
Hopefully not in a couple of years. I am planning to keep this set up as long as it runs the current games at decent frames/quality.
When do you plan on building it?
Summer/Autumn 2012.
Do you plan on overclocking?
No real need to overclock. possibly some small adjustments with the GPU, but I will leave the CPU and RAM alone ^^
Do you need an Operating System?
No need for an operating system. I am currently in possession of such :3
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Nvidia cards, please. Had such good experiences with them. I currently have a GTS250. Is it possible to use it as a secondary card for the second monitor and/or for physics acceleration (Nvidia PhysX?). Other than that, SLi is most likely not necessary.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I live in Finland at the moment, but am moving to Scotland in the autumn (September time), so assuming I would build the computer then, the parts could come from UK region.
recycling parts and other questions
When building the computer I am using now, I happened to get a good deal on a 750W PSU .___. Of course I went ahead and bought it. Might have been quite a bit of overkill there, so I am wondering If I can use it in the next build? Would a higher-end performance computer run properly off of a 750W?
Also, I already have 3HDD's, and plan on acquiring more (I never delete anything, and I archive everything :D ), so it would be nice if the case had room for 3-6 HDD's easily.
Thank you already beforehand ~
You can use your existing power supply. Hopefully it's actually a good model? A non-overclocked single GPU configuration is barely going to break 200-300w.
You can use the GTS 250 as a PhysX card but I wouldn't since PhysX is mostly useless.
It's sort of pointless to plan six months ahead since pricing isn't static and new components will be released soon.
In six months, you will be building with a Core i5 3570 and H77 along with whatever Kepler equivalent of a GTX 560 Ti ends up being called. Memory is memory, just get 2x4gb 1333MHz / 1600MHz cas9 @ 1.5v - nothing else to discuss there. Case, Fractal Design Define R3, Antec P280, Corsair 550D - all nice cases that can accommodate six drives.

Yup, thanks for the reply mate.

GTX 560 Ti (GF114, 40nm, 358mm^2) equivalent is GTX 680 (GK104, 28nm, 294mm^2), more or less. I wonder how this means pricing in 6 months will end up, if TSMC 28nm production and yields can meet the various demands--which are not just from AMD and Nvidia GPUs of course.

So I booted up, all fans are running, all components seem to be running, but no video output. I think my motherboard is probably ok since mouse + keyboard are powered on as well, running from USB. Is there any way to check what is going wrong, considering I don't have another desktop to cannibalize parts from?

i wonder why AMd created a gap in performance in its 7000 series. The 7850 will perform alot better than the 7770. no 7000 series card is in the performance and budget range of the 6870, which is selling out fast...
|
Actually my motherboard just sticks to code 00 which is... unassigned. Doesn't even flip through the codes for various parts of system initialization. Mobo dead I guess?

It's probably easier and takes less time to design (and get to market before Nvidia) if Pitcairn/7870 is in most fashions just architecturally double of Verde/7770.
+ Show Spoiler [images] + Pitcairn Verde Note that 5xxx series was the same way with 58xx and 57xx.

Mobo dead I guess? Which motherboard, what code, how? Are you listening to POST beeps (which of course requires the system speaker to be hooked up)?

Asrock P67 Pro3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230 Panel on the motherboard itself says 00. Doesn't change at all.
I am not hearing any beeps.

You probably forgot the 8pin EPS connector or you probably forgot a 6pin PCIe connector.
|
On March 15 2012 08:07 skyR wrote: You probably forgot the 8pin EPS connector or you probably forgot a 6pin PCIe connector.
My PSU actually doesn't have an 8 pin EPS, just a double 4 pin (two connected together), so I used that. The 6pin PCIe is connected. Also, how would that affect the motherboard at all? It powers on and supplies power to the fans/usb, just ... as far as I can tell it doesn't boot at all past that.
|
4+4 is a 8pin EPS. GTX 560 Ti has two 6pin PCIe connectors, both must be connected.

My PSU only had 1 6pin PCIe, so I used an adapter for the other PCIe slot. But i mean, none of this explains why my motherboard powers up but won't start does it?

What? 680 is now a GK104?

Try some kind of resetting BIOS, making sure the monitor is turned on and plugged into the graphics card and not the motherboard (and try multiple cables, a known working monitor, etc.), reseating the graphics card, using only one RAM stick (try both sticks one at a time), removing all unnecessary components until it works, and so on.

What? 680 is now a GK104? Yeah, it's just a naming changeup. They think a GK104-based graphics card has performance rivaling or bettering HD 7970, so why not call it a GTX 680? After all, considering yields and availability, not to mention performance, the prices will be quite a bit higher than GTX 560 Ti ever was. People wouldn't take kindly to a GTX 660 Ti at around $500 or maybe even higher, no matter what the performance was.
GK100-based graphics cards should be more powerful and come later.

yea doing.
It would be a lot simpler if my motherboard actually had onboard video... I literally can't plug in a monitor without the gpu lol~

But just to clarify, is it likely something is simply dead?
|
Meh it's stuck at 00 even with just ram, cpu, and motherboard. GPU disconnected, no PCI slots, no SATA connections, nothing.
|
Yea this doesn't work at all, just returning everything.

What is your budget? preferably under 750, but could go up to 800-850 (want to buy a hi-res monitor)
What is your resolution? I dont have a monitor atm, but what is the best for the cheapest monitor you guys think?
What are you using it for? Gaming, I also produce music and photoshop so something that can handle all that preferably.
What is your upgrade cycle?
Every 2 years or so
When do you plan on building it? asap
Do you plan on overclocking? not really
Do you need an Operating System? Yes.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Is it neccasary to run sc2 smoothly and free of lag with only 1?
Where are you buying your parts from? I live in NYC, where do you guys suggest and do you suggest me learning to build it myself or just asking a store or something?
|
Hello i got one question i want to stream sc2 games in a descent quality im thinking about buying a i5 but it´s 2500k really necessary? would a 2420 be able to stream as well?
