well my friend ordered this build and doesn't know much so i was seeing if he made a mistake
|
That case has no cable management (from what I can see in the pictures, can't tell for sure) and back-facing HDD mounting...and is a Raidmax (and looks terrible IMO but that's your preference).
For that kind of price I'd rather get the Fractal Design Core 3000 ($65 at newegg) but maybe that's just me.
EDIT: or for a (similarly??) gaudy look the Zalman Z9 plus is better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811235027

well i only came here because sky helped me with my build before.. i assumed he made mistakes but i was just hoping he didn't completely fail. seems like he did though. the build will work though right?
|
Edit: guess there's a backstory I missed. Ignore me.
|
Not a complete fail. Everything will work but component selection could have been better.
|
Well yeah, it's nothing like "oops I got a microATX case and full ATX motherboard" and stuff won't fit. It's just not the greatest option unless he's really going for that look exactly.
|
This is something I'd like to ask about, is there any benefit to a full ATX motherboard compared to a micro atx or mini atx or is the only difference the size and therefore amount of PCI slots and such?

It's only the size so more connectivity, features, phases, and other stuff.

No. This depends on the configuration and what you want in a motherboard.

No, E-ATX is better because it's bigger.
It's not the size mate, it's how you use it (ok, or what it has to use and what you need).

Often if you don't need the extra ports and so on, an otherwise equivalent microATX motherboard may be a little bit cheaper than the ATX one, so it's something to consider maybe. miniITX is so small (so it's difficult to cram all the parts on the small space, and some compromises are inevitable) and uncommon at retail that prices are kind of high, so that's generally not a good choice unless you want to use a case that only takes miniITX.

Hi guys I am thinking of upgrading my computer but I am not sure whats the best way.. and I need help.. My current system is the following:
RAM...G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK DDR2 4GB (2X2GB) CL5 PC8500 1066MHZ DUAL CHANNEL KIT PSU...THERMALTAKE W0116 TOUGHPOWER 750W CABLE MANAGEMENT ATI CROSSFIRE CERTIFIED Case...THERMALTAKE VB1000BWS SOPRANO WINDOW BLACK CPU cooler...ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 7 PRO S775 CPU...INTEL CORE 2 QUAD CORE Q6700 2.66 GHZ LGA775 - 1066 FSB - BOX MOBO...ASUS P5Q PRO GPU...SAPPHIRE RADEON HD4850 512MB DDR3 SINLGE SLOT COOLER HDMI PCI-E RETAIL HDD... Crucial M4 256Gb ssd
What is your budget? I would like to spend exactly as much as I need to get a system that does my work. The less the better but really if that takes $1000 (I doubt it though) I will just give it.
What is your resolution? 2 monitors, one 20'' 1600x1200, one 24'' 1920x1200
What are you using it for? Playing poker (its my job), running postgreSQL, playing SC2, surfing the net. Would be good if it could play D3 when it comes but I obviously dont need that now. Main reason I need a new computer is that Holdemmanager 2 (a new poker analytics program) is kinda slow. I added the ssd just a week or so ago and things have imporved but an addon to HEM2 which is called Notecaddy is very memory intensive and I am not able to use it for analysis efficiently. I can play poker with no prob (HEM2, Notecaddy, a bazillion tables and more poker programs running etc) but I cannot use it for analysis.
What is your upgrade cycle? 2 years? It depends on what I need to do. I have bought a laptop (Dell XPS17) with i-2630, Nvidia GT-550 8 months ago so I only need a good desktop to work with.
When do you plan on building it? In one month if you suggest a whole new system or sooner if I only need to buy more RAM etc..
Do you plan on overclocking? Sure.
Do you need an Operating System? Nope.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Nope/never.
Where are you buying your parts from? I live in Greece so I mainly buy from european or greek shops (http://www3.hardwareversand.de, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, skroutz.gr) but I bought the ssd from US ebay. In short.. from wherever is cheaper.
So my questions are:
1) Can my mobo use DDR3 RAM? I find it weird that DDR2 is slower and almost double the price of DDR3.. 2) If I buy a new CPU (i-2500k for example) can I use the PSU/case I already have or should I also buy a new one? pros/cons? 3) Should I wait for Ivy league or any new technology that I am unware of and just add 4Gb of RAM or something now to get my job done?
All opinions are really appreciated. Thanks!

No your motherboard cannot use DDR3. DDR2 is more expensive because it's old and manufacturers no longer mass produce or even produce it at all.
You can re-use the case and power supply.
You can just buy now if you want. Ivybridge won't be released until April and there isn't going to be a significant increase in cpu performance.
You should probably buy another monitor, eg. U2412M if you want 1920x1200.
|
Do you suggest to buy more DDR2 RAM or just scrap it all and buy a new computer?
I use two monitors one 1600x1200 and the other 1920x1200. Why should I buy a new one? You mean to be able to have two with 1920x1200?
