Oh didn't know that, i think i saw a newegg video on how to build your pc, and the guy said that. skyR why do you mention the SLI, because of the weight of the second card? do you know anything about these plastic standoffs? edit with picture of them + Show Spoiler + ![]()

£400 What is your resolution? 1280x1024 What are you using it for? Gaming - not hardcore gaming though. SC2 on low, and wanna play diablo 3 on it too. What is your upgrade cycle? I dont really want to upgrade it.I cant see any game coming out that id want to upgrade in order to play it. So as long as i can go without, the better When do you plan on building it? Hopefully early, mid january. If not, late feb at the latest Do you plan on overclocking? no Do you need an Operating System? no. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? no Where are you buying your parts from? Anywhere cheap ^^ I dont have any preferences, but ive been using www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk Its only a 5 min drive from my house so i can save on shipping my picking it up ![]() I know it asks about OS, but i dont need monitor, mouse, keyboard, headset or anything. Just all the expensive bits :p thanks fellas ![]()

Looking at it from another angle, I think it'd be a really really stupid design to release a motherboard that must be grounded to the chassis at each of the points. Some people will have plastic, while others may have cases with no hole at the corresponding location. This would make the probability of user error really high. So it really seems unlikely to matter. Just use whatever you have.

The important function is just to raise the motherboard away from the side of the case such that traces and surface mount components on the back side are not shorted to each other via the side of the case. I think that the standoff positions on the motherboard would be more or less connected to the same ground plane, so I wouldn't expect huge differences electrically if some were not used. I'm noob at PCB layout and EMI though. Confuzzling shit sometimes.

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS PC OS: Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 (Latest Service Packs) | Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 5600+ 2.8 GHz | Memory: 2 GB RAM | Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® 260 or ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 or better I guess it's doable. But not on that site as it only has terrible prebuilt ones in that price range. 400 pounds = ~458 euros CPU: i3 2100 96.41€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=41220&agid=1617 Motherboard: MSI H61M-E33 H61 54.15€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=44938&agid=1603 GPU: ASUS Radeon HD 6870 DirectCU 143.49€ 14 http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=41505&agid=1004 RAM: Corsair Valueselect 1333MHz 4GB 17.71€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=38042&agid=1192 HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200RPM 46.19€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=28152&agid=689 Case: Xigmatek Asgard 31.61€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=28607&agid=631 PSU: Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 450W 41.01€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=30074&agid=1627 Optical Drive: Samsung SH-222AB 16.68€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=47362&agid=699 Total: 447.25€ + 30€ shipping = 477.25€ = 416.62£ If it goes too much above 400 for your likings, replace the GPU with: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 123.90€ http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=39504&agid=1004 That way you'll be at 399.xx£

edit: i forgot what i wanted to say, It would make a huge difference if you could save another 50-100 euros to get a better CPU as it would probably last you much longer and give you a better experience (less lag).

Standoffs connect a part of the motherboard electrically to the case if they're metal. This is connecting stuff that is By raising the motherboard up, they prevent components on the motherboard from being connected directly to each other (shorted) or connected to ground, via the side of the case. i.e. stuff that's not supposed to be connected being unintentionally connected together. Okay, motherboards work when placed outside of a case, right? It's not like they're connected to a sheet of metal via standoffs when operating like that...

Should run it easily on ultra with 1280x1024 so it might be overkill but I went with your budget. (its more to run Diablo 3 with decent FPS) Edit: Btw yeah I don't know any UK sites so I went with this, feel free to compare around

I know ive seen an HD 6850 for about £110 and its a bit more then that off that german site but not by much iirc This might sound silly, but how long till something like this would be redundant? Say if i came to actually buy this in january, comparing price to performance would it still be a good buy? or are there likely to be changes that could make it more cost efficient or something? thanks again
