Do you live near a microcenter? There are quite good discounts on processors there that could free up budget for other parts. (i7 930 for $200)

If SC2 and eventually Diablo 3 are the most graphically challenging things you're going to do, get the GTX 460.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/amd_announces_8-core_bulldozer_cpu
AMD officials say Bulldozer is being targeted at servers and performance desktop machines. The good news is that Bulldozer will be drop-in compatible with most current high-end servers. The bad news is that it won’t be compatible with existing AM3 boards. Instead, AMD says it will introduce a new AM3+ socket. These sockets will be backward compatible with older chips so you could drop a Phenom II X6 in it. According to AMD, Bulldozer will be built on a new 32nm process at Global Foundries.

Alright TL tech experts, a bit of time if you have it. I am getting a new computer soon, and honestly cbf building it myself. I got a quote from a local wholesaler, and the prices are pretty decent. I checked them to what im getting online, and once I factor in shipping its pretty close. I'll happily pay $50 (Au) for them to assemble it properly. But i'd just like a second opinion as to whether this is a good build, or whether it's missing something.
Now before I post it, I know it's missing a graphics card. Im going to use my current 8800 as a stopgap till I buy a new one (probably a 4850 or 4870)

Cooler Master Centurion 5 II (w/ 500W PSU)
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
Intel Core i7 930 (Quad - 2.8 Ghz, 45nm, 8mb Cache
6 Gig 1333Mhz DDR3 Ram
500GB HD
DVD Burner Dual Layer.

Any comments would be great, thanks

The case is fine, (i hv the same lol) but the PSU is definitely NOT fine if you're going to OC this. 930s are really good at OCing, and if you're not going to... well... tht's just a waste of money.
If u ARE gonna OC, i recommend to get a better PSU than this CM generic crap. Personally Corsair PSUs are a little pricey, but well worth it for their beefyness. Abt 450W - 600W will give you plenty of headroom for anything else apart from SLI or CF.

Some Qs:
What brand is yr mem?
What brand is yr HD?
Is this really just a SC2 rig?
Pls don't use your current 8800 OR get a 4850 or 4870... wtf it's last gen tech and you're getting a 930 for it??
Just a note that if you're getting a good CPU but not a good gfx, the gfx will ultimately end up bottlenecking the CPU and you will get less than mediocre results even for an outstanding CPU.
You buying from MSY? Or some other shifty azn place lol

That GTX 470 from Palit looks real sweet and cheaper too. I just read it consumes too much power though (~230W). Would the Corsair 650HX be still enough for the system. I might get a 750HX just to be on the safe side. And I assume it won't require any extra cooling.

For the video card I would rather pay 60$ extra and go with the GTX470, just for the "in case" situation =).

And thanks for mentioning the microcenter deal. I am 1 hour away from the boston store and they seems to have i7 cores with nice deals. i7 930 for 200$ and i7 870 for 230$ (cheaper than the 860 i listed). The deal with i7 930 is very good but it will require me to change my motherboard too and will be more costly than my current system with i7 870 i think. The Asus boards i checked are around 230$. I read that only thing good about 930 (with respect to i7-870) is its high over-clock performance and it probable compatibility with future generation stuff.

I might consider OC (will need more studying on that though) but do you think it will be worth the extra cost for the i7-930? And if you think so do you have any suggestions for the motherboard?

Thanks in advance

I want to run SC2 smoother and on higher settings, and my 3 year old gaming rig is starting to get a little tired... What should I upgrade first?

Intel Core2Duo 6420 @ 2.13 GHz
2GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Or should I just be saving up for a completely new pc?

Thanks,
Eric

What mobo/chipset do you have? I would recommend dropping a e8400/e8600 (higher multi for e8600) and clocking that to 4Ghz for a cheap-stop gap measure. And obviously get something mid-range today, which would be a GTX460. The GTS250 is not enough of a jump IMO, unless that's an old 8800GTS (G80, not G92).

However, if you usually keep things for 3 years, I would go ahead and just upgrade everything.

Would that second deal, with the 550W carry enough power for the computer I'm looking to build? I have no idea how to pick out PSU's (or if my build is any good... : ( )

I can't find your build in this thread, just a few pieces of it in your first post. If you're going for an i5 and a HD 5770, 550 W is enough.

Hi!

I'm looking for a new System + Monitor with a focus on Gaming and Programming and some 3d modelling/rendering.

For Monitor i would like a 22"-24" full hd something for gaming 8).

CPU - so far the 1055t looks pretty good and is pretty cheap and my last 2 computers were amd powered so this one seems like to one to go for

HDD - Are there affordable 120GB SSDs out there? I was looking for a SSD as a OS-Disk for Windows7 & 2 linux distros. As a second HDD i would go with a WD Black / Samsung F3 with about 500gb.

Ram - some random 4GB DDR3 1333 set.

I wanna be able to play any new games at full resolution full details.

I am not really up to date with all things Hardware so thats just what caught my eye so far and i am looking for some help.

I thought about spending up to 1200€ on Computer + Monitor.
it would be great if you could use this site for prices and if the pre-choices i made arent any good, please correct me.

Thanks!

I have a pretty amazing build for what turns out to be about 1000 euro. If the prices are just switched to euro (not converted), it'll probably be about the same.

1090T (although 1055T is $100 cheaper and you can increase 1055T with a scaler in bios)
M4A79TD EVO V
G.SKILL 8 GB
WD Black 1 TB
Antec 903 (NOT recommended, I actually just ordered a COOLERMASTER case to replace it)
Gigabyte Radeon 5870 2GB
Pioneer DVD-RW
LG W2340VG x2 ($200 each!)

With the savings from the 1055T vs 1090T, and not getting another HDD (I have a WD Blue 500 GB as well) you can afford a 64GB SSD, which is more than enough for Windows 7, SC2, PS CS5, Maya, and 2 Linux distros (provided you set aside some space for /home on the HDD).

KOFGokuon PM'ed me so this didn't get lost, gave me some info, but I've changed the build a bit after some recommendations and reading. Thanks to KOF for the help. He recommended an i5-760 over my first processor, and a GTX 460, but I've seen FragKrag recommending the AMD 955 (and someone else I think?) over the Intel processors a lot. The 955 is $25 cheaper, which would free up money to go with the 460 instead. Would that be a good idea?

He also recommended this case, and this PSU, saying that he's had good luck with the PSU brand.

So I could make it look like this instead.

CPU: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0325957

GFX: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0342001

Mobo: Not 100% sure this would work, but http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0334912 which says this in the specs: Video Chipset ATi Radeon HD4250 Graphics Chipset.. Does that mean it wouldn't support the NVidia card?

Memory: Same that I linked before should still work? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4837614&Sku=C13-8220

HDD: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0340804 x 2 (or find it somewhere else in 1 TB because they don't have 1TB, but I question whether or not I would ever really need that. On my current computer [pretty much porn free], we haven't used the 300GB or so we have now).

Totally forgot to put a CD/DVD Drive on there before, but I think this this should do? I've had two lightscribe in our current comp, and one burned out, and the current one's door (w/e) sticks. My dad had one in his comp that crapped out too. I know a lot of people use that brand though, but w/e..

All that would bring me to $729 as of today, but I'm not building it today, so I may run into deals here and there and be able to piece it together over the next couple months. That's a bit over budget, but I think I could still handle that. And I could cut some money off if this case/PSU would be sufficient: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?nm_mc=AFC-SlickDeals&cm_mmc=AFC-SlickDeals-_-NA-_-NA-_-NA&ItemList=Combo.481403

Also, is there a big difference in memory brands? If not, I'd probably go with slightly cheaper memory.

Thanks again for any help.

With that motherboard, it's possible that your video card will block 3 of the SATA ports. GTX 460 takes up 2 slots of width, and though it's not a really long card, it might still be too long. I'm not a big fan of micro-atx boards just because they're so small. Even so, it looks like you only have 2 sata drives anyways so it's not a problem

get this hd instead
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=spinpoint_1_tb-_-22-152-185-_-Product
it's only 1 drive so if it fails you're a little more screwed than having 2 500's, but it's cheaper and these drives are rated and recommended highly.

If you're going to a MC in person to buy the stuff, then I believe they have some deals where if you buy an AMD cpu you can get an AMD motherboard for free, I used my last ad from there to wrap up my plates (I'm moving) so I can't check the truth of that memory

there isn't really a difference in ram companies, assuming that the ram runs at the timings that it's advertised at. This is skeptical with some companies, the other difference is in warranties and customer service. gskill and corsair are both fine

If you're gonna get the gtx 460 you'll want a slightly more powerful psu than the ocz 500, 600W is probably still ok

Asus AM3 870 Motherboard

$235 Bundle Deal from microcenter here.

You could also save $60 and get the cheaper Biostar A785G mATX motherboard deal, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Then from newegg:

1TB Spinpoint F3 + OCZ Fatal1ty 550W PSU

$120 with $20 MIR

Antec 300 Illusion + GSkill Ripjaws RAM

$130 with $15 MIR

Then $200 for the GTX 460 and $20 for an optical drive gives us $705 in total, $670 after MIR.

What's the performance difference like between the 965 and the 995? Will it be that noticeable. Again, I'm only looking for web browsing, and SCII playing (probably Diablo 3 when that comes out), streaming videos, and music.

The difference is bubkis def not worth the 10-20 dollar difference imo.

The 965 is pretty much the same chip as the 955 now of days with just a small factory boost, the 965 is just a higher quality binned version so it can oc maybe 200mhz better on avg but both will reach about 3.8ghz pretty easily if you know what you're doing. If you're doing no OC or a light OC 955 used the saved 20 bucks to get a nice cooler that makes your computer quiet or just save the money.

That being said i haven't looked at the deals listed if those motherboards are worth a cake.
