I think my graphics card is brokedddd =/ I haven't done anything different from before but now I'm getting artifacts and processes stop responding after a couple seconds of opening something video related like a game or youtube video. I'm going to update my drivers to Catalyst 10.8, as it was previously 10.6, but I don't think it's going to help much. Sapphire Vapor-X 4850 1gb ddr3. You cant even install windows let alone sc2 on that!

If you want a newer motherboard and new RAM, you can try this mobo/CPU (Phenom II X2 555 BE) combo or this one if you want to spend more for USB 3.0 and SATA 6 GB/s support and more peripheral slots. Some people would argue against getting a dual core these days, but for SC2 it should be good enough. It's only certain games and applications that really make good use of more processor cores. If you want to spend some $40 more to get a quad core, you can get one of the Phenom II X4. With those more modern AM3-only mobos like the above, you'd need RAM like this DDR3 kit. Together with the above that's around $250. A budget gaming case people like is the Antec 300 for around $60 before rebate, though of course there are others. edit: HandBanana: in that kind of extreme 4v4 big battle scenario, it seems to be true that the Phenom II X4 955 could be a liability. If you turn down CPU-related graphics options like physics calculations (and leave shaders on ultra, for example), it would improve performance. I'm not sure how much though. In that scenario, you probably couldn't maintain 60 fps, as a guess. Overall R04R's build is a good value, but if you want to move on up... I recently completed my computer build running an i5-750/gts250 (from pny if that matters) and while everything else seems to run smoothly, my monitor fails to recieve signal as soon as I do the reboot after installing the drivers for the GPU. (I've tried installing from the CD as well as directly from the website). I poked around online and many people said that the power supply may be an issue but I'm currently using a 550W from Coolermaster and the gts250 has a requirement of 450W. Another possible problem might be the monitor that I'm using is simply too old and can't handle the resolution that the drivers automatically set the computer to (not sure if it works that way). To attempt to test if that was the problem, I tried booting it up using the "Boot using lowest resolution" option from the startup screen and it'll load all the way up to where the desktop is showing but then dies in another 5-10 seconds. The machine is still running, though the amount of noise it produces drops off significantly after the monitor dies. (Still need to open the machine up and see if it's the GPU that stops spinning or if it's just quite.)

Anyways I think I'm in the market to build myself a computer. I did some research and got a basic list so far. CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 445 $80 GPU: SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770$135 Motherboard: Foxcon Motherboard$45 RAM:G.Skill 4GB DDR3 1333 $81 I already have optical drives, a HD, and case. My HD is a Western Digital Cavier IDE 160gb drive from 2004, so its quite old but it has enough space for my needs. Would I be hurting myself by not upgrading to a new hard drive? My case is an ANTEC, i'm not really sure of the model. But the dimensions are roughly 15.5 in x 7.5 in x 16in. I'm guessing I'll need a new power supply as my old one is only 350W. Some suggestions here based on my other parts needs would be awesome. On Newegg my total for CPU, GPU, mobo, & RAM is $395 right. I'm trying to keep this under $500. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Edit: Another question: When would be a good time to buy? I can wait a few months. I noticed a lot of graphic card reviews dated around late september, early october of 2009 so is that a time when new lines come out? Thanks!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102873 Not a fan of the motherboard. I don't know how great the Foxconn brand is, but I'd be better off recommending you get a motherboard by MSI, Gigabyte, or Asus. Something from here hopefully. You could probably increase the performance of your load times if you get a new 7200 rpm hard drive, if yours isn't 7200 rpm. That'll cost around $40 for 250gb worth, or $70 for 1TB. You'll need about 450-550w for your power supply. Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, and Silverstone are all good, and less so OCZ and Cooler Master

See CPU review here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2923/6 Also, I would definitely recommend upgrading to a more modern drive. Not only is the SATA interface much faster than IDE, the drives themselves are much faster as well. Think about picking up a Western Digital Caviar Black if you can.

The Athlon X3 is an outstanding chip, I would recommend against stepping back from it. At worst, it's a worthwhile upgrade for three cores. Even better, it could unlock to an X4, which is a steal at the price.

I don't know why you recommended that CPU and RAM, both are terrible choices. The Athlon II X3 and G-Skill that he picked out are much much better. I would go with the Gigabyte motherboard. That foxcon one looks pretty bad. While the GTS 460 is awesome, the 5770 is just as good value for money, especially for a budget build. I would bump up to a 460 if you can afford it though. You should pick up a Spinpoint F3 rather than a caviar black, same performance and the spinpoint is cheaper. For a power supply, the OCZ Fatal1ty should be just fine.

The dual core may be able to unlock. If not, it's still better than the Athlon II X2.
