He originally had an 890fx in his budget, but since he's probably not going to crossfire I switched it with an 870 which only has 1 16x lane. ...At least the one that I linked anyway

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=6_112&item_id=018460 but with dell having a deal I was thinking of purchasing this keybaord http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/I_O_Devices/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=330-6214#reviews which uses 2 usb ports meaning id have zero usb ports for a mouse or anything else to plug in. Any other case that I should grab. Now do I purchase the alien ware keyboard at 79.99 or do i burchase the g15 for 50 dollars is there a differance. It is referbished btw.. so 30 dollars more for the alienware or the g15 thats referbished. Anyone know if there are warrentys on referbished models? And any idea for a better case then that?

For the CPU, I'm not so sure. SC2 isn't well-threaded so 3+ cores don't really help over 2 cores. AMD mobile GPUs usually have low clock rates but more cores compared to Intel at comparable prices/laptops, so sticking with Intel should be a safer bet. Any mobile i3/i5/i7 CPU should be good, but the low power versions might have issues? A Core 2 Duo T9xxx, P9xxx, T8xxx, or P8xxx should be fine too. Laptop prices, availabilities, and deals fluctuate around. Hopefully you can find something after looking around, or somebody else can find something for you. This laptop GPU benchmark/info list might be interesting. With that budget, I think something with an i5 or better CPU, a Mobility HD 5650 GPU (or higher number) or GT 335M (or higher number) GPU should be good. Maybe the GPU should be bumped up slightly for a laptop with a higher resolution. Thanks. I'd been using This on notebookcheck which others might find useful but that benchmarks list you linked is also very good. I was hoping for something towards the upper end of mediumish. I've narrowed my choices down somewhat, the main stats of the ones I'm looking at are: 15.6inch ones Option 1 (Dell, Alienware, £1,199): Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 540M(2.53GHz,3MB cache) - it's a dual core, turbo goes up to 3.066 4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048] 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX260M graphics card Supports a 1600*900 res unlike the rest which are all 1366 x 768 Option 2 (Asus, £855): Intel® Core™ i5-450M (2.4GHz) - again it's a dual core, turbo goes up to 2.66 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT325M , 1GB dedicated graphics memory - appears to be a worse card than the one with the lower number, the GTX 260M, fuck fucking naming conventions. 4096MB (2048x2) DDRIII 1066 RAM Includes a blu-ray player that I will never use for playing blu-rays Option 3 Asus, £1360):Intel® Core™ i7-720QM processor 1.60 GHz <- it's a quad core, it can turbo 2 cores up to 2.8 I believe, and all four up to lower numbers. NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 360M, 1GB dedicated graphics memory <- also appears to be a worse card than the GTX 260M, what the fuck is this shit, nVidia? 8912MB (2048x4) DDRIII 1066 RAM <- That's a lot of ram, and most of the reason why I'm considering this one, but if I wanted to spend this much I could get 6gb of faster ram on the alienware... hm? All three come with the 64bit version of win7. Advice would again be appreciated, thanks ![]()

You think it's possible to upgrade the video card? Or should I just send it back for them to replace the video card? The current GPU fan is broken, which causes a little bit of a heating issue if I don't put a fan right next to it's vent. If it's even possible, I've been having troubles locating a place to even buy a video card. It is a dedicated card and has a slot for me to open on the bottom to easily examine the video card.

I've done a bit of research, and found that for the price, the i5 processors seem to be the best bang for my buck. I'm looking at the following parts, and am wondering if there's anything that I can get for a better price with better performance to boot. Mobo = http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6470657&Sku=A455-2941 or http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5608207&csid=_21 (No clue which is a better brand, but I remember back when I was heavy into PC gaming and up-to-date on hardware, ASUS was a reputable brand. I also know that GB is what is used in our current comps, which typically run fine, but are not quite built for the level of performance I'd like). Processor = Intel i5 650: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5581941&csid=_21 The 660 is $20 more, and I'd like to save that $20 if the performance difference isn't too great. From what I've read online, the i5 dominated the AMD processors, which are now significantly less, but still... I'd like to build a computer that I won't need to upgrade for a while. But I'm getting off track. GFX = As far as I can tell, they are almost identical, but from what I'm looking at it looks like the cheaper one is better? The only difference I'm seeing is the output types on them: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5316156&CatId=3669 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6637753&CatId=3669 HDD: I figure I'll get like 1TB of space, which is likely more than I'll ever use (but, being that it'll be my own, there's likely going to be a LOT of pr0n on there, hahaha). I notice that Tiger sells Seagate and Western Digital, and we've used WD for years and not had issues. They seem to be fairly priced, so what the heck? I figure that 4 gig memory, DDR3, like this Corsair listed here should be more than enough. I figured pretty much what you said about cases would be how to shop for them, but I still don't know which I should go for. I also am unsure about what level of PSU I would need (despite the informative OP). I think that covers all the parts I need. We have 2 copies of XP, and I think you can install that on two computers, so we should have at least one install left. I hope that's enough information to satisfy the OP, if there are better deals out there (better performance for price), please let me know. I'm pretty newb at this stuff, so I could be WAY off on what I need/have picked here. I only picked tigerdirect as the reference site because I live fairly close to one and could buy them at the physical location. If they're cheaper at newegg, etc, then I'd buy from there.

I'm out to build a PC. It's going to be an HTPC type thing, but it needs to be possible to play games on it (Civ5, SC2, Settlers 7, Mass Effect…) The premises follow: a) It needs to be small and as quiet as possible b) It needs to be upgradeable for longevity c) It must be possible to game on it PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro 500W Memory: Corsair DDR3-1333, 3GB CPU: Intel Core i3 540 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB/64MB cache AND/OR Intel X25-V (40GB SSD) Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 Any opinions on the components chosen? Could I choose something better without blowing the budget completely? Am I on the right track? Suggestions for improvements are appreciated!

I'd probably recommend an Athlon II X3 or for a bit more, a Phenom II X4 if you are going to be gaming on it. The 5770 is a good choice, but the GTX 460 is awesome too and gives nice futureproofing. About your current setup: You'd want 2x2GB RAM as that CPU/Mobo uses dual channel rather than triple channel ram. The WD green drive is meh. Its good for storage, but you'd want a Spinpoint F3 for your OS + Games.

From what I've read online, the i5 dominated the AMD processors, which are now significantly less, but still... I'd like to build a computer that I won't need to upgrade for a while. But I'm getting off track. This is the biggest problem I really have with this build after a quick skim. I looked at some benchmarks and they seem to say that the dual core i5s aren't exactly a great value. If you're going to get one of those, you may as well just drop down to an i3 540. But I have a question for you: Do you live near a microcenter? If you do, you're basically set processor-wise. They sell the i5 760 for a cheaper price than tigerdirect sells the i5 650, and they sell the i5 750 for even cheaper. If you live near a microcenter I strongly recommend picking up either the i5 750 or i5 760, doesn't really matter which one.Or you could even pick up an i3 540 for 100 dollars and invest in a better graphics card or something. Microcenter is great and really opens up your options. If you don't live near one though, I'd probably drop down to the i3 540 on Tigerdirect for 130 Some links for buying stuff i3 540: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5581942&CatId=5196 http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0341728 i5 760- http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0341729 i5 750- http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0317379

deconduo: What resolution are you going to be playing at? Whats your budget? Where are you going to be buying from? Resolution: No idea. It hadn't even occured to me to consider this. Does it matter? I'm going to be running off a 22 or 24 inch LCD screen of some sort, but I don't know what resolution that results in. Based on benchmarks I assumed the card would be more than enough to handle whatever relatively low-intense graphics I could throw at it. Budget and shops: The budget is fairly flexible, but it'll be in Norwegian currency and bought (mostly) from Norwegian webshops so I'm not sure how much sense it would make to put it in numbers. See below for more details. I'd probably recommend an Athlon II X3 or for a bit more, a Phenom II X4 if you are going to be gaming on it. The 5770 is a good choice, but the GTX 460 is awesome too and gives nice futureproofing. I want Intel because they are decent CPUs, my last rig was AMD (and I was very happy with it), and last but not least because they support e-sports very actively. It's within my budget to upgrade to i5 though, and I will probably end up doing that. deconduo and mav451 You'd want 2x2GB RAM as that CPU/Mobo uses dual channel rather than triple channel ram. ----- Your RAM should be an even number too, but I think you meant 4GB when you typed that. Actually I had completely forgotten about the dual channel thing. I will definitively change this to 2x2, thanks. mav451 I really would recommend against the Clarkdale. It moves the IMC off the die, but on the package. I.e. you get a fairly substantial rise in latency. I would recommend moving up to a i5 750. I was under the impression i5s are Clarkdales too, but maybe not? Tests I've seen from Tom's Hardware, Anandtech and such do not mention any noticeable latency as you refer to - do you have any concrete review to point me towards? Either way I will more than likely end up with an i5, so probably it's a moot point. mav451 The 40GB SSD may be a bit cramped if you have more than two modern games installed. I would get any 500GB/platter 1TB HDs as your boot drive. Samsung F3, WD10EALS, etc. Both would be nice, but I don't know how viable that is within the budget. How much space does an installation of Win7 take? 10ish GB easily, I'm guessing? I think I'll end up with a normal hard drive to begin with, and rather luxuriously upgrade as I go along. I will build this system myself so I don't mind doing that at all. In fact I rather like it.

This is the result of moving the IMC off die (but still on package). http://www.anandtech.com/show/2901/12 As for gaming performance, you can see why I would prefer to recommend either the i3 Clarkdale or the i5 Lynnfield. The i5 Clarkdale is a no-man's land of having not enough performance to justify the price.
