My budget is in the range of $600-$750 CAD, not including monitor, keyboard and mouse (as I already own them) My current screen resolution on my monitor is 1280x1024, however I plan to eventually purchace a better primary monitor (It would be nice for the computer to be able to support both of the monitors, if you have a monitor suggestion that would be appreciated as well.) I would be using this computer for gaming (RPGs and RTSs) as well as basic coding and graphics/word processing. I am not looking for a powerful computer for running photoshop however. The hope is that I would be able to play starcraft 2 and games like WoW on highest settings. This computer would be expected to be sufficient for around 3 years before I plan to perform a major upgrade on it. I plan on building this computer sometime during September. I do not plan on Overclocking this computer. I already have an operating system, I do not need to purchase it as well. I do not plan on adding a second GPU using Crossfire (It probably wouldn't fit in my budget anyways). I plan on buying as many components as possible in Canada. I live in Calgary, so my best bet may be to purchase these components on the internet through a site like newegg.ca. Thanks in advance for your help. | ||

-------------------------------------------------------- Hey guys. Looking for a decent gaming mouse ($50 or under) and a gamepad. The gamepad will be for fighting games and sports (ie. SSF4, soccer games). The mouse will be for RTS and FPS mostly I guess. Nothing too fancy, it doesn't have to have 10 programmable buttons. These are in stock in my area and I'm considering them. What do you guys think? You could save a little money on a cheaper optical drive depending on your needs. HD 5770 is not recommended for ultra at those resolutions. Other than that, the only relatively bad deal I saw on NCIX was the case you posted. The Antec 300 is better afaik and is on sale for cheaper now. i3-540 vs. Phenom II X4 955 depends on the game. Differences in general should be pretty small, except in the rare games that use all cores effectively, in which the AMD product is better. For SC2, i3-540 should be enough without overclocking. If you overclocked a non-trivial amount, you'd need an aftermarket heatsink/fan. GambleVII: The i5-760 in general would be a better deal than the Phenom II X6 1055T even if they were the same price. Only if you do heavy encoding work or something that actually uses 6 cores all the time, would the X6 1055T outperform the i5-760. I don't know, probably large/heavy items like case and PSU should be picked up locally. Which canadacomputers location would you go to? Part availability depends on the store location. mississauga location. now id do small encoding and photoshop work but thats pretty much it. I just want best bang for buck, and I do want quad core compared to dual like the i3. | ||

Btw here is a review of the ModXStream 700W. The unit apparently can't do 700W, but that's fine considering that your system might not even use half that. OCZ PSUs seem to be decent budget options except when operating in extreme conditions. That is, except the 400W StealthXStream, which was better than decent for the price. GambleVII: Same case as above can be found for $50 at canadacomputers. There's 9 in Mississauga. As for the PSU, the Corsair CX400 is available and is known to be good for the price. 400W (360 on +12 rail) is very likely enough, but others may disagree. As a general guideline you can try this PSU calculator for another estimate. I can't find a review of the StealthXStream 2 500W but that should be fine too. | ||

SC2 and most games don't use more than 2 cores generally. Other games and other programs are better threaded and would benefit from a quad core. It's expected that as time goes on and programmers get smarter and/or more experienced, more programs will be better threaded. Many probably feel uncomfortable recommending a dual core these days, and I can understand that argument. If you're worried about it and are willing to spend a little more, maybe this combo may interest you (see this): AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad Core Processor and ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.456060 Earlier I was mostly shooting for the budget limit, though I didn't calculate shipping costs exactly. What do I want this thing to do? Mainly, I'm going to be gaming, but I would also like to be able to use this machine to do some number crunching (Excel,Stata, Matlab, etc.) as well as a bit of video editing (nothing major, though). I want it to be able to run new FP shooters at high resolution, multiple (up to 3) Eve Online clients, as well as, of course, SC2 on ultra settings. I would prefer good multitasking as well, e.g. running a couple of Eve clients while I play LoL and babble away on TS. Here's what I've been pondering: CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Mobo: Gigabyte GA-890XA-UD3 Memory: Looking for suggestions GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 Powersupply: OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Hard drive: HITACHI Deskstar 2TB 32mb 3G 7200RPM DVD Drive: LITE-ON DVD/RW Box: Antec Nine Hundred Monitor: Asus 24" 2ms LCD Is only having a 500w PSU going to be an issue? Would an i7 870 or 930 offer superior performance for what I'm looking to do? Would that increase in performance justify the more spendy motherboard I would need to plug it into? Is $1300 too low a budget for what I want to be able to do? | ||

Basically, I need to find a cheaper mobo/cpu combo, because an i7 930 and anything is just a bit too much for what I'll be able to afford. I've narrowed it down to 3 possible processors but each has it's own nuances that I'm wondering about. I've got a budget of maybe 350 dollars or so, less if possible What I need in a mobo- SLI ready, USB 3.0 would be nice but is by no stretch of the imagination necessary. Mostly just SLI ready for when I eventually jam a second 470 into it. i5 760- this is the most likely scenario at this point because it's the cheapest processor and intel makes it much easier to SLI than AMD does. Also is the 760 worth the 20 dollars extra it is over a 750? i7 860- I can grab this for the same price as a 930, but 30 dollars more than an i5 760. Is it worth the 30 dollars more and is it much of a step back from a 930? AMD Phenom II X4 BE- I can get this for a similar price as the 760, but I'm having a horrid time finding an SLI ready mobo for AMD. I'd kind of like to use AM3 because it seems to have a brighter future in upgrading, but as I said, SLI and AMD don't seem to mix. As a reference, the Microcenter prices of these are: i7 860- 200 i5 760- 170 i5 750- 150 Phenom II X4 BE- 165 And as I was typing this I found a pretty good deal on Newegg for an SLI mobo for the X4 BE (After I complained about how they don't seem to mix of course) and was wondering if it was any good. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.470509 EDIT: Thanks for the quick response, definitely cleared some things up. Also, I'm having a really hard time finding a reasonably priced SLI board for socket LGA 1156 without sacrificing for x8/x8. Any help would be appreciated. EDIT 2: I may actually just be able to scrap this whole post. I found a motherboard that has possibilities for SLI, and actually fits in my budget with the i7 930. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188049 So unless there are any complaints about this board, which I'm hoping there aren't, then I may have found my final deal. | ||

Or if you're super nervous, just raise the BCLK on your 750 to 140 and you have the same 2.8Ghz as a i5 760. *shrug* But, stock volts, you can go much higher than that. I wouldn't worry about future upgrades (when considering AMD) just yet. IMO, AMD has been super secretive on BD, Osbourne effect by damned. If it turns out to be great, awesome, but for now I am holding judgement. And before anyone questions my faith, I was 100% AMD from 2000-2007. People hung on to AM2 boards thinking they'd have something great to upgrade to and then Barcelona comes out, TLB and all. | ||

There was a $20 difference between 250gb and 1tb. If you wanted to make this cheaper the first thing I would knock down is the RAM. I don't know how well 2gb of RAM will do but if you find it tolerable that's ~$40 saved. Next would be the processor, which is something you probably don't want to touch. Going to the cheapest Athlon dual core would save $20. The video card is good, you'll be running med/high most of the time. I couldn't find a "gaming" card that was worth its price around $75 base price, so the next step up was justified. If you live near a microcenter you can cut ~$40 off this total and get an athlon quad core or phenom dual core and get a free motherboard/$10 motherboard. Just ordered this build, thanks for setting it up for me ! Anything in particular i'll need to get (drivers?) to complete the build? | ||

As far as the i7 860 goes, it's the same CPU (in stats) as the i7 930. However, it has the onboard PCIe controller that will hamper the overclocks at stock voltages. Phenoms are a good buy as well, but the problem with them is that they don't have good chipsets that support SLI, and the i5 is generally superior And as I was typing this I found a pretty good deal on Newegg for an SLI mobo for the X4 BE (After I complained about how they don't seem to mix of course) and was wondering if it was any good. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.470509 EDIT: Thanks for the quick response, definitely cleared some things up. LGA 1156 x16/x16 is actually impossible without an additional Nvidia NF200 chip which offers an extra 16 lanes of PCIe. Since the NF200 chip is quite expensive, if you want to go SLI X16/X16 full bandwidth you generally want to go with an i7 9xx CPU. x8/x8 really isn't too bad though. It will work fine with an HD 5850/GTX 460. EVGA is generally a solid board maker so I don't have any problems with it | ||

I haven't included a monitor as that should be up to you. I gave you an 870 motherboard which only has 1 PCI-express 2.0 x16.0 lane, which I assume you'll only ever use 1 card (considering your PSU choice), so the 890FX was not considered to reduce the price. This 870 still has USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 so it has what you want for future-proofing. | ||
