Every power supply should have a 4pin ATX connector or a 4+4pin ATX / EPS connector. Turns out that the 8pin connector was actually 2 different 4pin connectors. So I plugged 1 of them in and now I get post but it's making a small short beep so I messed with the RAM (switching them around, changing which slot they're in) but still the same beep occurs. When I remove the RAM I only get 3 long beeps over and over. What should I do?

Well, I'd suggest looking up the beep codes for your motherboard, personally. But the 3 long beeps after removing your RAM probably means "No RAM".
One beep should be a successful POST...

Hey, I have two computers, one is mine and the other is like a family computer for homework email etc. It is getting old maybe 4 years now, maybe more. Last week my HDD died and I did not back up the information because I just got this computer and was planning on doing it, well now. Is there any possible way to get the pictures and stuff off of it? A professional or something?
The other thing is since that computer is getting past it's time I was hoping to use some of it to make a new computer. What do you think is still reusable? It is an old machine. Is the PSU still good? The case is fine, the disc drive is good, monitor is good.
So with salvaging what I can the budget would be 500$ or less if possible. I live in Canada would like to buy from Canada computers.
My monitor is: 1680x1050
Used for homework email, basic stuff.
Upgrade whenever its needed. 2-4 years.
I plan on building it really soon.
I do need an OS. ( what would change if I did not need OS?)
Canada computer would be preferred.
Thanks a lot!
|
Alright got the computer running. Thanks for the help
|
Well, you can install an OS off either, and yes, you can run (some) OSes off USB, although I'd think if you wanted to do anything serious that way, you'd want USB 3.
But yeah, you can install via USB.

I got one recommendation so far...looking for a couple more.

Oh just one more thing. I can't seem to have working internet through the ethernet cable, does that mean the motherboard doesn't have a connection for that or do I need to download a driver or something?

Yeah that looks fine. If you don't want to get the power supply at a different place, an Antec Earthwatts Green 380D (no power cord included), Corsair CX430 V2, or maybe Rosewill Green Series 430W from newegg would be okay. Those are a bit worse than the XFX unit though, but you won't be needing nearly that much power, or a second PCIe connector anyway--at least for that build.

Check the motherboard box for a driver CD. Install the Ethernet drivers from that CD. You can get pretty much everything else online in terms of drivers.

Definitely sounds like a driver issue. If you don't have the installation cd go to your motherboards home page and you'll most likely be able to download all drivers. Remember to download the latest drivers for you graphics card as well when we are talking drivers.

What about a case? What are some good ones that are large enough and what about coolers?
|
The cooler that comes with the i5-2400 is good enough for keeping temperatures reasonable if you're not overclocking, which you can't with that setup. If you're looking for something with ultra-low noise, then that's a different matter. But then you wouldn't want the graphics card either, and so on.
If you just want a reasonably-sturdy case that's definitely large enough (almost every mATX case would be large enough), Antec 300 is going for $50 before $15 MIR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042
It's missing a few modern conveniences, but that's not a big deal unless you're allergic to zip ties or need to tinker around inside it nonstop.

Although if people are willing to pay a bit more, the Corsair Carbide 400R is looking like a sexy option at $100, all things considered.

Either needs some extra build love or a bit more design work for higher end builds, but it's looking like a decent option. Particularly if you could snipe a sale on it.

The build that was recommended by Bambipwnsu totals to about $1025 without including the mouse and without having a DVD burner.
My recommended configuration comes to $1033 before mail in rebates.
The Antec Nine Hundred is a shit case by today's standards and if you like the aesthetics of it than the Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 which is a bit better than the original Nine Hundred can be had for the same price. If you don't care about the case aesthetics than I believe there are much better less expensive options such as the Coolermaster HAF 912, Bitfenix Shinobi, Corrsair Carbide Series 400R, Fractal Design Define R3, etc.
You don't need SLI to run games at 1080p on reasonably high settings so you would not need the UD4 motherboard that was recommended even though the G43 is also capable of SLI, it's a much less expensive board. Even though the Antec Earthwatts 650 for $50 is a decent deal, this much power is not necessary for a single GPU configuration. Opting for a lower wattage power supply that is less expensive and slightly higher quality is the better option.

I have a couple of questions:
1) Is the 9800gt a good video card for gaming? (1024x768, don't need to be high settings) This cards are very common and cheap in mexico (compared to other parts which are overpriced because of importation taxes and such). If not, is there a slightly better AMD card i could try and get?
2) Which motherboard should i choose? I haven't decided for a case or PSU, but i will probably get a Core i3 2100 as CPU and 4GB of RAM (Is DDR3 1333 the must-go?). I'll look for it in the stores there are around the city.
|
Yes the 9800GT is still a good card for such a low resolution.
If you're getting a core i3 2100 than your choices should be between a H61 or H67. H67 provides SATA 6Gbps (used mainly for SSDs) where as the H61 does not. Yes, you would want 1333MHz DDR3.
Good power supplies for this configuration include but not limited to the Antec Earthwatts 380D and Corsair CX430 V2.

Cougar is HEC/Compucase's higher-end brand. However, a lot of the units still have issues with poor +5V and +3.3V performance, like excessive ripple and often not hot voltage regulation. They range from kinda below average to very good.
I guess this one is one of the bad ones: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Cougar-A-Series-560-W-Power-Supply-Review/1332
And anyway, $60 for a 560W HEC unit is like...not much of a shocker. I mean, Seasonic S12II Bronze 520W is going for $60.
