Small resolutions you shouldn't do too badly. High resolutions you'll have trouble. Seriously though there isn't any reason for not getting a GPU because if you can't afford a $100 GPU like a HD5770, maybe you shouldn't buy a computer just yet.

I realize that having a GPU is preferred, but what if I'm looking for a laptop and it only has integrated graphics? I'm considering getting a laptop for school (I have a gaming computer at home), so I just need sc2 to be playable. Would the Sandy Bridge i5/i7's for laptops run sc2 smoothly (minimum settings) at 1440x900?

Well you should have mentioned the fact this was for a notebook. You would be able to play it on low and medium smoothly. I'd get a Llano instead if you're interested in gaming on a budget notebook.

It'll cost extra--but still way way under $1500 even if you load it up--if you buy parts through NCIXUS and pay for assembly+testing ($50 fee). They carry cases like that:

If you're not familiar, you just put individual parts into the shopping cart and add this item:

okay sweet thank you any recommendations on what to get started with?

I want to be able to stream, play sc2 on at least medium with decent fps, but not make the computer super loud for my roommmate :/

Guys just a question Please answer this.

Would the GTX 550 ti and the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU be able to connect to the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard?

really? the 550 ti is the more cheaper of the GTX series... and the AMd phenom is relatively cheap too.
please explain why they are bad purchases.

The performance difference between a GTX 550 Ti and a Radeon HD5770 does not justify the difference in price.

Bulldozer is due out in a month so I don't understand why you're purchasing a 965 when you can simply just wait or purchase a cheap placeholder processor? Do you honestly think the next generation Bulldozer due in 2013 will be on the AM3+ socket and not AM4?

It doesn't seem like you're tech savvy so you probably aren't overclocking, in which case an Intel configuration would end up costing less and perform much better. Since you linked to Newegg, I'm assuming you are purchasing from Newegg. A $153 motherboard + a $135 processor for a total of $288 when a core i5 2400 is $190 and a H61 or H67 motherboard costs around $70 for a total of $260.

Can the ATI Radeon 5770 Run SC2 on at least High?
EDIT: 4git it, just played Crysis on high on a friends computer that had 5770

The 965 Black Edition allows for overclocking, so this will mean a longer lifespan( when i decide to overclock)

Will an H67 still be able to support AMD 965 and connect to both of the graphics cards mentioned??
Also, i prefer to have 4 DDR3 RAM slots and not 2...

As for the BullDozer, IT HAS TOO MANY CORES!!!! i dont think ill be able to afford something octacore (((

Well if you have no intention of upgrading to Bulldozer than why purchase an AM3+ 990FX motherboard that is meant to be used with a Bulldozer processor?

The H67 motherboard is for Intel processors. You realize the second generation Phenom processors from AMD are already five years old in terms of performance? You would have a longer performance lifespan with an Intel configuration even without overclocking.

Yes a Radeon HD5770 can run Starcraft II on high.

Option 1: Get a Phenom II X4 965, get an aftermarket heatsink and a medium-end motherboard capable of overclocked power draws, and overclock it
Option 2: Get a Core i5-2400 and don't overclock it

The price will be similar, but option 2 will have somewhat better performance overall and particularly in games. It will also require less effort, and it will have a lot lower heat and power consumption.

In this article, you see that an overclocked second generation Phenom (4GHz) can't even beat a non-overclocked core i5 2500 (3.3GHz): http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-2600k-990x_9.html#sect2

To be fair, I don't think they overclock the northbridge for the Phenom II, which would help, but that won't make up all the difference.

y is it so hard to find last gens HD 5000 cards? like the 5850, 5870 etc. From the benchmarks i've seen, they perform better.

I've looked around but only some places have them and they are SUPER expensive.

An hd5850's performance is between the 6850 and 6870, and there 5870 is i think, beteen the 6870 and 6950

The best price/performance card overall must be the hd6850 and 6870

I have a question about hard drives, I'd rather not start a new topic so I'll stick it here if that's alright.
My external HDD (2 TB) for my laptop seems to be on the fritz. I use it as a storage drive and put backups as well as data on it, just turning it on when I need it. However, I can't write to it with Acronis anymore when I want to back up my main C: drive. I downloaded SeaTools and it fails a 'Short DST' test and passes a 'short generic'. SMART check is unavailable. Under HD Tune there's nothing listed under the Health tab and the Error Scan returns only green (on a quick scan, the normal takes too long). I can still see data in the folders, so I'm hoping just to take data off of it, it seems to only have problems writing. So I think this drive is on its way out (just a month or two past the 1 year warranty of course) so I'm looking to get a new one.

I'm leading toward an internal and getting an inclosure (or removing my current HDD from its metal one and using that, if it can be done) and then using it as a real internal storage drive when I build a computer (about 8 months).
I'm looking at 4 drives I guess, all have 3 year warranties:
WD 1.5TB (WD15EARS) for $60
WD 2TB (WD20EARS) for $82. It's a 2 TB of the WD green listed above.
Samsung 2 TB Ecogreen F4 for $80 (70 if I buy in 3 hours, which I wouldn't mind if it's the best pick)
or get the Samsung F3 1TB for $50. Which is faster (limited by my USB2.0 though) but would allow me to use it as a faster HDD when I build)

I think I have read that 2 TB and larger drives are less reliable than smaller ones (why I'm considering the 1.5), is this true? Are any of these a clear winner for storage use as an external for a few months before going internal? I want something that will last, my current one didn't seem to.
Thanks a bunch!

Generally when they're pushing a new capacity size, the first units may have some reliability issues. Back when 2TB drives were new, there were issues IIRC, as maybe you'd expect for 3TB drives now.

IIRC (memory fuzzy, not sure) the drives with more platters fail more often. That should make sense. However, current 2TB drives are just 3-4 platters, depending on which you get.

I have no idea about failure rates for those models though.

You're using one of these as a secondary data drive for when you migrate? Spinpoint F3 1TB would be the only one suitable for an OS drive. All should be fast enough that they saturate a USB 2.0 link easily for sequential transfers. The Spinpoint F3 would be fastest for random access.

As for brands found in the US and currently-available stuff:

Seasonic - all units (lol)***
Antec - Neo Eco, High Current Gamer up to 620W, TruePower New**
Corsair - TX V2, AX up to 850W
XFX - all units

**side note: + Show Spoiler +
Well actually, you can call all the others rebrands of Seasonic designs that they sell at retail or as OEM packaged units. But the TPN is maybe a semi-custom job that doesn't correspond to anything Seasonic sells. You can't find the TX V2 / XFX Core 650-850W equivalents sold under the Seasonic label in the US though.

***side note: + Show Spoiler +
Actually you need to be careful sometimes. e.g. Not all Enermax units are made by Enermax. The NAXN / Tomahawk stuff is CWT, with a few Sirtecs. A few models are pretty bad, while the rest is decent to good.

There are plenty of good non-Seasonic units though, and occasionally somebody will ask Seasonic to produce a turd for them.
