What is your budget? $1,000
What is your resolution? 1680x1080
What are you using it for? Play SC2 on Ultra and Stream is primary, Star Wars Old Republic, Diablo 3. (on really good settings)
What is your upgrade cycle? 4 Years
When do you plan on building it? This week preferably.
Do you plan on overclocking? Yes
Do you need an Operating System? No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No.
Where are you buying your parts from? I can drive to local Microcenter or Frys and US-Newegg.
I want to run my OS & critical apps on a SSD and I only need about 500 GB for storage after that. I’ve been reading this thread for a long time and would love any input/help. Thanks for your time.

I currently have a 1.5 TB HDD, but would like to consider adding a 60/128 gig SSD if possible. I appreciate any help.
Quite frankly $800 isn't large enough for an overclockable SLI / CrossfireX ready configuration with an SSD. You are either going to have to sacrifice the SSD or the SLI / CrossfireX readiness. I'm not sure why you are looking into doing SLI or CrossfireX unless you just feel like wasting money or plan on doing Eyefinity / Surround. Also when your upgrade cycle is less than two years, I don't see the reasoning behind doing this.

It says under 90% load, the minimum PSU wattage I need is 351W, but it recommends 401W.
Will I be safe with an XFX 450W PSU? It seems like it's kind of close, will this put too much strain on my PSU?
For the extra $$ should I just get the XFX 550W? after the MIR it is only 5 more.
The power supply calculator gives you a recommended power supply wattage. Don't mistake it for a load figure. If minimum is 351w than that means it's going to use less than 300w under load.

System to be OCed, but nothing to the extreme.
I have 550w Cooler Master, but with alll the negative opinions in the thread about CM PSUs I start to fear about it.
Edit: For something so critical to the system, I would never be cheap. Rather spend some buck on a component like this, than on anything else.
It depends on the model. Some of their older discontinued lines such as Real Power and UCP were good. Most of the current line is crap except for the Silent Pro line though.
For a GTX 580 configuration, I would recommend a XFX Core Edition 550 or an Antec High Current Gamer 520.

Some manufacturers will include zipties for you. Anti static wrist strap isn't necessary but I guess if you're paranoid about it, you can get one.

I'm using Windows Vista 32bit.
If this is primarily for gaming, you are better off getting a core i3 2100, H61 motherboard, and 4gb of DDR3 memory. This would total up to $205.

Here's a configuration for $898 capable of everything you asked for.
Not sure how big you want your SSD to be but you can just select one of bigger size if need be, good choices would include but not limited to Samsung 470 Series, Intel 320 Series, and Crucial M4. You did say that you only needed 500GB for a Spinpoint F3 for $50 is a good deal so why not?

Frankly, an anti-static wrist strap is good, but not vital. If you're really careful to keep one hand on the PSU, with the PSU plugged in and turned off to ground you, you can work inside the computer over carpet.
Mind you, I suggest not trying that unless you really know what you're doing, and are 100% sure about doing it one handed. Better to just move the PC off carpet to avoid static, and ground yourself against the PSU.
I do know what I'm doing, and I still don't do that for anything more complicated than pulling RAM.
|
skyR why do you suggest 8GB instead of 4GB?
Thanks for the build. Going to start buying later this afternoon.
|
Because you have a $1000 budget, you can step down to 2x2GB by all means but it doesn't make much sense. With memory being so inexpensive nowadays, 8GB is sort of the standard for new builds in your budget range.
|
Alright, and if you had my budget and personal requirements, these are the parts you would get? Or would you save money and step down in certain areas?
|
Yes. I have a 2500k, ASUS P8P67, and a Seasonic unit myself (XFX Core Edition is a rebranded Seasonic). If I were to ever get an SSD, it would be from Intel. Case is personal preference so you can choose whatever you want but the HAF 912 is a good case at a good price but personally I would never get a case from Coolermaster since I find them to be ugly.

Not overclockable, not multi-GPU ready. Your budget allows neither of these unless you want to skimp on components and is highly unnecessary at such a pitiful resolution.

The difference is primarily phases and connectivity. ASUS P8P67 Pro and Deluxe also offers an Advanced RMA option.
Microcenter has the purchase a core i5 2500k (or any other Sandybridge processor) and get $40 off motherboard) promotion running currently: http://www.microcenter.com/specials/promotions/save40_promo.html
The $120 motherboard I linked is the ASUS P8P67: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0364220
Whatever you do, just don't get the ASUS P8P67 LE. It's a garbage board.

@skyr, i wish to have a motherboard with 4 RAM slots, since 4x2 GB RAM cards tends to cost a lot less then 2 x4 GB RAM cards. would the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157256be a good choice( it seems obviously superior to the one you gave me, and paying an extra 10 bucks isnt that bad)?
Edit: R U SERIOUS? THAT ONE JUST GOT DEACTIVATED!!!! oh well, ill take the recommended one u guys gave me then.

Because the lower end cards do not need the memory bandwidth provided by GDDR5 so manufacturers save on costs by using DDR3.

@ skyr, the computer case says it only has 2 USB front ports, but it doesnt say anything about back ports. 2 usb ports is like useless since the mouse takes up 1 usb port, and if the one of them malfunctions.....
Edit: the reviews also say its pretty thin , im pretty clumsy, so im afraid ill damage it. would the Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case be a better alternative(albeit slightly more costly)

The Asrock H61M-VS makes mention that it has six USB ports at the rear and has four front panel headers for front USB.
Rear = Back.

Your motherboard will have plenty of USB ports (depending on which one you get but normally you will have a minimum of 4) which will be at the back and the front ports on your case are extras that you plug into your motherboard

Hello, I'm planning to buy a new pc this week. I want it for gaming at 1080 at ultra ideally, or very high (SC2, and if possible BF3). No plans on OC now, nor crossfire/sli, but would like to have the option.
From what I read here, I understand that I would need something like a i5 2500k and gtx 560 ti. Now, I'm not sure about the mobo, and dont live on usa, so if someone can advice me considering this place as reference, I would appreciate it. My budget it is about $1500 (no OS, I have a monitor). Thanks in advance.

Yes, but the computer case does not mention if it has any openings that allow all the ports to be usable...
