I thought retail versions are transferable to new machines while the OEM versions are just one time use?

OEM is limited to 1 install per copy. Retail has a higher limit and comes with warranty/support.

If you try to install OEM on another computer you have to contact microsoft, and they will allow you to install on another computer, but only once. (you also have to lie and say your mobo died or some shit).

Ah, yes, that detail. Sorry, I'm a bit slower after I take my meds.

Still shouldn't be too big of a deal though, there's generally a new OS by the time you need more than 2 installs.

Edited build, thanks guys!

Hey all, I'm trying to put a build together for a friend - he says he has a budget of about $500 USD. Will be used mainly for gaming (SC2 and D3). Unfortunately I don't think I can get there - I am assuming he needs the OS and everything listed, it's possible he won't need everything but I want to give him the bare bones to work from. Any help trimming any remaining fat I missed?

i3 2105, Dual core, but with HT for $140, shave off $45.

Zotac GTS 450, $75 AMIR, save $65

That will help quite a bit. He can run caseless for a few weeks maybe, unless he has pets or small children and nowhere to set it out of reach.

A .edu email can get an upgrade version of Win7 for ~$30, I believe, which can be used for a clean install. Combine all those, and he's under $500, keep the case and he's at ~ $530 or so?

There isn't any point getting an i3 2105 if you aren't going to use the HD3000. You can save $10 for an identical processor, the i3 2100, in everywhere that actually matters.

Thanks Jingle, always helpful man. Let me ask you though, for really really budget builds (as this seems to be), would it be a good idea to just go for an Phenom II x4 3.2ghz for $119 and just make this an AMD build? I realize Intel is currently the best CPU brand but the Phenom II x4 is still a good processor and it's $20 cheaper than the i3.

Definitely will add in the GPU and I know he has a .edu email address so that's huge.

Edit - I have a Phenom II x4 and can run SC2 on high while streaming in good quality without issue so I can't imagine it holding him back at all for SC2 and D3, at least on med-high settings.

Oh, right, for some reason I wasn't giving the 2100 credit for having HT. Probably too used to thinking i5 vs i7.

Only reason to go to an AMD CPU even at these super low price points is if you actually need more physical cores, like for streaming. Otherwise, the dead socket and worse performance in applications that can't take advantage of the cores makes it a terrible decision.

A $60 case is unnecessary, a Thermaltake V3 would be much more suitable for a low budget: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133094 but if your friend is really anal about its aesthetics than you will have to make sacrifices elsewhere such as using the IGP until he can afford a discrete graphics card.

No, a second generation Phenom is not a good choice at all. It is only $5 less expensive than the Core i3 2100 and majorly under performs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115078

A Corsair CX430 V2 would also be much more suitable for your friend's budget at $45 ($35 after mail in rebate): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

Also heatspreaders don't matter unless again your friend is really anal about cool looking heatspreaders that cost an extra $4.

Well, the heatsink on OCZ reapers serves at least one useful function. Gives you an excellent place to grab onto when you're pulling RAM sticks. Not quite a reason to spend extra money if you're on a tight budget though.

And they're EOL anyways. And a couple of batches were shit due to bad IC's. But yeah, memory heatspreaders=gimmick.

i3-2100, that GTS 450, $30 Windows 7 through .edu, and then...

Switch power supply to Corsair CX430 V2 - $45, $35 AMIR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

Optical drive / hard drive combo (500GB Seagate 7200.12) - $53
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.679768

$4 cheaper 2 x 2GB 1333 MHz DDR3 - $32
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231394

edit: ninja'd about RAM and power supply -_-

And use a cheaper case or no case. That's about as low as it's going to get though.

Yeah, that Zotac 450 is actually a pretty solid budget gaming deal, IMO. It won't hit Ultra at 1080p without a fairly hefty OC probably, but most people on that budget don't get 1080p monitors.

Well, actually maybe it can. Not the same manufacturer, but still a GTS 450.

Keep in mind that they add on a 2xAA as well, further stressing the GPU.

Any recommendation on a decent LGA 775 board? I was hoping that my GTX 460 that I just got would fit in a Dell that I got from work, but no go.

I was thinking of goin with a ASUS P5Q or a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P but that might be overkill for a budget gaming rig. Gonna reuse most of the stuff from the Dell. Trying to spend less than $150 for the rest of what I need - board, cooler, case.

It might just be more economical to just get a whole new computer. LGA775 is extremely outdated and the motherboards are getting rare/expensive.

I'm not sure about Dell at that stage but the power supply might actually be proprietary. There was a period where Dell's power supplies, while having 2x12 pins commonly found on ATX power supplies, were wired differently and thus would not work with non-Dell motherboards.

So you might just be getting more than a new case and motherboard.

Hey guys, I have a quick question about this setup and you look like a nice bunch of helpful lads

I'm planning to buy a new PC/upgrade my current one, mostly for playing SC2 (and D3 in the future), although I have also picked up both Mass Effects and the GTAIV series in the recent Steam sales. So basically, it's gonna serve primarily as a gaming pc.

A friend of mine is somewhat into PC-building (at least more than I am), so we tried to find some nice parts for a nice price together. We ended up at Alternate (I'm Dutch) and started out with an upgrade kit and went on from there. This what I ended up with:

Motherboard: ASRock 870 Extreme3
CPU: Phenom II X4 955 AMD
RAM: 4096MB DDR3 (brand isn't mentioned unfortunately)
GPU: SAPPHIRE HD6850
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint 1TB (this is my current HDD and it should still work fine)
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

I plan on using my current case.

The motherboard+CPU+RAM are bundled together in an upgrade kit (https://www.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=mainboard&artno=GDERQ1&cn=1) and I can get a W7 upgrade through my university (which, according to several google sessions, should work on my 32-bit XP version if I wipe my HDD and do a clean install).

The whole thing would cost me around €460 which doesn't seem like a lot of money for such a major upgrade and practically a completely new desktop (no need to post my current specs but I'm rocking a 5 year-old PC). I don't feel the need to have the absolute cream of the crop parts and my monitor is an old CRT (so somewhat of a 'bottleneck' I assume ^^). So basically I'd like to know if this is a good deal or if there are some things I could/should change
There is no spoon.

Few things.
1. Amd processors aren't very good compared to intel at this moment. So I'd go with an intel.
2. That PSU is way too heavy. for that setup I'd get a 430~450W psu.

[edit]
You can allso get that package cheaper if you buy components loose:
http://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkelmandje/?legen=1&product[277361]=1&product[251552]=1&product[213070]=1

[edit #2]
Try this
http://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkelmandje/?legen=1&product[364199]=1&product[396816]=1&product[410215]=1&product[232977]=1&product[80156]=1&product[338876]=1

That processor is better than the amd.
If you want USB3 you could get the ASRock H61M/U3S3 instead, which is 17 euro more. You could allso upgrade to 8 gb ram for another 20 euro.

Another option is to get an i5 2400/2500. You could even get the 2500k if you want to overclock (will need a different motherboard) All depends on your budget.
