Between the i-3 2100 and the i-5 2400. I plan on playing sc2 with maybe a couple background things going (someones stream or music). High settings on sc2 and the ability to play d3 comfortably. Other than those games, I watch a lot of movies and streams. Which would be the better cpu choice?

Because I am spending my parents' money on this computer, they want to make sure they aren't taking any risks while building this computer. My dad is wondering why this computer would not be a good alternative: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/cyberpowerpc-cyberpowerpc-gamer-xtreme-desktop-computer-featuring-intel-sandy-bridge-core-i5-25-gxi220-english-gxi220/10170686.aspx?path=33841ab5abf164fc8c94ad30d6c279fden02

Obviously I know that the computer I build will be better than this, and he has no problems with this, he is just looking for an explanation for why having me build the computer is the better option, so much so that paying an extra $100 (give or take a little) for simplicity's and convenience's sakes would not be a correct decision. Any help as to what he should be told?

Building a computer, first of all, is a pretty fun experience (never done it myself but have watched someone do it and it seems fun xD).

Also, it gives you the flexibility in choosing your parts. You can probably get the hard drive, RAM, case, and PSU from better brands than what's in the pre-built.

That's about all I can think of..

Because the knowledge you acquire while learning to build it and load all the software and drivers will save you hundreds of dollars down the road on computer repairs, upgrades, and replacements?

Also, Cyberpower's default builds use shit PSU's or charge you a ton extra for a reliable one. It's like getting the Rust Inhibitor on a car...

They also use shady tactics, like they shipped a friend of mine a GTX 465 instead of a 460, and tried to tell him it was a free upgrade because they were out of stock. When he called them out after I showed him benchmarks, they somehow shipped the right card overnight that day.

@Scarymeerkat, Parents love hearing things about their childs advancing knowledge and growth in understanding of things. Tell him that by building the computer you'll learn things about how a computer works and more importantly learn important information that is important in our technological society.

Something along the lines of that will probably help your case, and if not, say that by building your own computer you would have much more control over what goes in it, and the quality of the parts that you are able to get by building it your self will last longer than those that best buy or other companies put in. For example, the computer you provided does not specify the mother board used. Best buy usually buys the cheapest parts to get the most power in the least price, however they also have to pay more for resale, something you would not have to do. With that extra money you could buy a more stable and respected motherboard.

@Onioncookie:

This is a bit above your original budget range, but it has a i5-2410M, HD 6850M (a downclocked desktop HD 5770, so it will run games on high or medium very well), and a 17" screen. I don't think this is a particularly great deal, but it looked better than most of the other options on amazon.de.

Acer Aspire 7750G

@Shizzabamman:

If you can afford it, get the i5-2400. It has two extra cores, Turbo Boost, and extra L3 cache over the i3-2100. If you were watching an HD stream on another monitor while playing, that could potentially have a small impact on your SC2 or other game's performance, on the dual core. However, if you're serious about just having good enough specs for SC2 (and probably D3?) and maybe not other things and future games, and especially if you don't have a stream going on in the background, getting an i3-2100 over the i5-2400 would be a decent place to save some money.

@scarymeerkat:

In addition, you may get longer warranties on individual parts from a computer you put together yourself. This is something that people who don't build their own computers may not realize. Hard drives, motherboards, graphics cards, power supplies, etc. tend to have warranties around 3 years, sometimes more (or less). Often times, customer support through some of the individual manufacturers--particularly if you're dealing with companies like EVGA, Corsair, etc., from what I've heard--is much better than through something like CyberPower.

If your parents would care at all, you could say you're getting a more energy-efficient system, depending on what you actually get. e.g. if you get a more efficient power supply. (Though really in reality, the energy savings are generally pretty small there, unless you're running distributed computing applications 24/7.) A 700W PSU that's not claimed to be 80 plus is probably going to have something well under 70% efficiency at idle loads with a i5-2400 and HD 6850.

Okay. But in terms of specs, it's actually pretty good for the price in a prebuilt, right? However, I won't get the experience of building and Cyberpower is a less reputable company. For example this computer NEEDS to last a while, I would assume this PC has a significantly worse chance of surviving 6-7 years? With the parts not being brand name (PSU, mobo, ram) that probably means it will not be as reliable, correct?

The price looks almost reasonable, but that's what makes it scary, coming from Cyberpower and Best Buy... After both of their markups, they had to cut the hell out of corners on some rather critical components to get those specs packed in.

It's like if someone tells you they'll sell you a used car, as is, with low mileage, for 75% of the blue book value. It may start today, but there's a reason you're getting what seems like such a good deal on it, and you probably don't want to find out the hard way.

That's an analogy you can give your parents. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

It's roughly $120 overpriced assuming it has a P67 motherboard, $200 if you can get an operating system for free.

Cyberpower provides a one year warranty. Individually components have three, five, and even lifetime warranty. You can conclude yourself which is more reliable.

So I guess it's a little too good to be true kind of thing, huh? I was surprised to find that price because I've seen similar/worse prebuilts for 100-200$ more. Thanks for the input, any more is also appreciated. Seeing how things have been going I have no doubt I'll be back with a coiple more questions. This forum is really helpful!

ok, I am new to computer building, and I would appreciate some help. I plan on spending around 1200-1500 on a new computer specifically for gaming. The resolution I plan on playing at is around 1600x1200. My upgrade cycle would be about 2 or so years. I plan on building this computer in the next 2 or so months. I would like to overclock but its not a necessity for me. Also I do need a OS. I would also like to crossfire but again, not a necessity. I plan on purchasing these parts from new egg. Thank you ahead of time for all of the help, you guys are great :D

Come back in two months when you plan on building. New components will have been released and prices / deals will have changed by the time you're ready to build.

I was in the same boat as you 6 years ago when i ordered my current computer. I had been doing a bunch of research and ended up going with a CyberpowerPC prebuilt computer from their website because they had the cheapest prices and I wasn't comfortable with building it myself.

I was very pleased with the computer that i bought. It came with an extra fan and an evga gpu rather than the no-name one they listed on their site. The case and cables were very well assembled.
The company itself is pretty good I would say. I've used their customer support a bunch of times and even though it was kind of ghetto it is was still very helpful and reliable. As for their parts go you can swap out any component with an upgrade/downgrade on their website.
Having typed that, I would still recommend buying the parts individually and assembling it yourself.
It is actually very easy like legos, and it will save some money even though cyberpower has good prices.
If you don't want a worry though then just order it from their website. I wouldn't get it through best buy. Also google teh_internetz and browse your local magazine shop for coupon codes

Futureshop has stocked with some more AMD 6970 2gb

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/diamond-diamond-radeon-6970pe52gxoc-2048mb-gddr5-pci-e-video-card-6970pe52gxoc/10162857.aspx?path=f811e9682b32b3bd05e184643bf62e1aen02&lang=fr-CA&pcname=&sku=10162857

How does their Price match work?
Will it work if im also using my 250$ gift card?

ty

Oh and, NCIX has
Diamond Radeon HD 6970 880MHZ 2GB 5.5GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI 2XMINI Display Port PCI-E Video Card @ 394.99$ - 30$ mir...
and Bestdirect has it at 341.30 WITH NO MIR!

That's pretty insane ^^

Just wanted to make sure again : the 6970 2gb is a good card for the price ^^ (vs Nvidia 570/580 that are also available at futureshop)

Why would you even bother with a HD6970. Sure OK, if you're running Eyefinity or 2560x1440 its not a bad idea but there's no reason to get that if you're not doing either things.

The GTX570, GTX580, and HD6970 are all wastes of money. You don't gain much out of them and they are not significantly better than weaker cards that an unplayable game is going to be significantly better looking or playable.

For those who are looking for gaming laptops, in my opinion AMD Fusion is the way to go.

Adequate CPU power for gaming, and great GPU power.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4444/amd-llano-notebook-review-a-series-fusion-apu-a8-3500m/11

Also insanely good battery life at a low price.

Pricematching in futureshop works like pricematching in any other store. You give the rep the ad and they will either say sorry nope or yes. If they says no, you ask to speak to the manager and if he/she also says no, you walk out of the store and go to another store. Obviously don't show them the gift card when you're doing this.

He has mentioned that he wants to do Eyefinity in previous posts but forgot to mention it in this one.

And the 6950 / 6970 are much better choices than the GTX 570 / GTX 580 for a multi-GPU configuration.

Yea, eventually, I want to do the Eyefinity. But I'm no where close to it yet... Still need 2 monitor, and then the GPU, or the other way around, gpu first and then Monitors ^^

Note this :
I currently am using AMD 5770. It runs SC2 perfectly, so yea, for SC2, the new GPU would be a waste.

However! BF3 is coming out soon. If the game allows it, I'd like to run everything on max and to eyefinity it.
Also, a friend will buy that used AMD 5770 should I get a new GPU.

@skyr : how does it work online though? (Unless if you can order online stuff in a physical store)

Uh if you're purchasing online. You have to make your purchase first and than email / call / visit a store in person about pricematching it. You're not guaranteed a pricematch if you order online since they can be douches =\
