Alright so I got it working but got an error while starting windows.

I'm using the 500GB harddrive from my old computer so I wouldnt have to reinstall everything(bought the computer at best buy).

I tried reformatting the whole thing and it still didnt work, got an error while starting windows(different error, said to call HP customer care, my old computer is an HP). Is the fact that the hard drive has all that software already on it the reason for that?

I put the old hard drive back into my old computer and it's working perfectly fine now.

Your old harddrive has drivers for your old components. Your new components require different drivers. You always want a fresh install of Windows when you are building a configuration from the ground up.

So basically I need a new HDD and OS to install? Right?

I had a feeling that might've been it if so. Appreciate the help.

Yes. You could use your old HDD but you'll need to format it. You mentioned you tried doing this. Did you try doing this in the Windows Installation Setup or did you do this through the desktop?

Windows tried to fix itself using some repair function at first(it failed)

Then HP recovery settings showed up, I backuped all my stuff onto my external, then formatted it "back to factory settings".

Tried starting it up again and got the error message saying to contact HP customer care when it was starting windows.

Started it up on my old comp, what I'm posting on now, and it's fine.

You're suppose to be formating with a Windows 7 installation disc, not with the disc HP provided you.

It's pre-installed onto the HDD, so I dont think I even got one?

I'll look but I'm pretty sure I didn't get one. I didnt use a disk when I formatted

HP doesn't provide you with an installation disc.

When you are buying components for a new configuration. You need a Windows installation disc. You either get this through your university (if you're a student), torrent it and burn it to a DVD yourself, or purchase it through Newegg (or another retailer) for $100.

@skyR and Myrmidon:

I only really want an SSD for boot purposes and putting several frequently used applications on there (browsers and such), though I also want to run some statistical analysis programs (Stata, Matlab, etc). I'm definitely willing to get a last generation SSD, as I think the jump from HDD to SSD will be significant regardless of how fast the SSD will end up being. I think a 60GB or 90GB SSD would be enough for my purposes, though I'm not 100% on that. As for cost, well... I think it depends as to whether the SSD would be justified.

Oh, and when I say "boot purposes", I have both Linux Mint and Windows 7 set up, and I dual boot into both, so that might justify an SSD purchase. Since I'll have both Linux and Windows, I'm not sure if 60GB is enough, though I'm sure that 90GB will be. The question is then whether the performance upgrade is worth it.
It is impossible to be a citizen if you don't make an effort to understand the most basic activities of your government. It is very difficult to thrive in an increasingly competitive world if you're a nation of doods.

Hi

I am building a new computer and this is the setup i'm thinking to choose. Since i don't know much about computers i'm relying on friends opinions and such. Would anybody mind giving me an ok or suggest better options?

I just installed my SSD, and Win7 x64 goes from turned off to all startup programs, including norton and rainmeter completely loaded in under 30 seconds. Granted, that's with a crucial SATAIII, with fairly high sequential reads, but that was 64GB for under $130.

Currently have 37GB free on it, out of 60 usable.

Everything looks good apart from the PSU. I've never heard of that brand so if you can find something like:
Antec Earthwatts EA430/EA500
XFX Core Pro 450W/550W
SuperFlower Amazon 450W/550W
Corsair CX500

It would be better.

@Mystlord:

Actually, even if you don't quite need all the capacity (and who knows if that might change) and don't have a SATA3 interface, there's a very good deal on the Crucial C300 128GB right now:

$195 shipped after promo code

That's about $1.5 / GB for still one of the highest-performing drives.

@maskseller:

Well, I've heard of Tacens but don't know much about their products. What I did find out was that that particular power supply is made by HEC. HEC makes some decent PSUs under the Cougar label, but they're usually contracted to make low-end bad power supplies you really don't want to buy. Without knowing more, I'd be safe and assume this is not a good HEC unit. I would go with one of deconduo's suggestions. Antec High Current Gamer 400W (and of course 520W) is also okay. If everything else is too expensive somehow or not available, Cooler Master GX450 is a little worse but would be okay. (the others in GX series are worse, so don't bother)

Only issue i have with them is they haven't sent it in to 80plus
but you're right their oem is HEC

couldn't find any reviews of that series though and i dont think the series is that new.

I was wondering if you guys knew of a website that compared the fps of video cards in different types of games. I want to get more information on the performance differences between the Geforce GTX 560 Ti and the Radeon HD 5850 Extreme.

Specifically these two cards:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102932

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-130-610&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=3#scrollFullInfo

The price difference between these two is so great, and so is it really worth it to pay nearly $100 more for the 560? The games I want to play later on will be SKYRIM, Guild Wars 2, and Diablo 3; will either cards have low fps when playing these games? I've done some comparisons between the two cards and they seem nearly identical. Would appreciate some advice.

Diablo 3 isn't going to be graphic intensive because it's Blizzard. Guild Wars 2 won't be graphic intensive because its an MMO. Skyrim is a console port last time I heard.
