Anisotropic filtering doesn't take much of a toll, and is something about looking at the screen at different angles.

Just wondering if you would have system lock-ups like I did. Sorry it took a while to respond. I've had 2 instances in my life of my PSU being insufficient. In both cases, the computer would boot normal and sit there normally if I did nothing but once I started a game or movie and the CPU/GPU starts asking for more juice, the entire computer would just click off suddenly. I never had any "freezes".

So I'm currently running it in 1900x1200 (16 bit) with every maxed but textures. Have a 850 watt Antec PSU, dont really want to consider OC'ing cpu or video card. Its a bit frustrating but meh I'm not gonna upgrade solely for SC2, but I wouldve expected to max out everything on a game that's been in development for SO LONG. I see people with much older (dual core pcs) claiming to have some pretty high fps with everything maxed and it leaves me bitter. Am 1 version behind driverwise but it should'nt account for a huge increase. Others suggest grabbing windows 7 and cranking up some more ram, which is something I'm considering. Otherwise I'm hoping ATI (which I'll probably never buy again) releases a newer/better set of drivers. One last option I could consider might be to get a raptor HD to runs game, it would have to be a significant improvement otherwise it just doesnt seem worth the investment. That's very surprising to me. The difference in our experiences must be your higher resolution. I am playing with everything maxed as high as will go on 1680x1050 (22"monitor) Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3Ghz 1333FSB 6MB ECS G31T-M QUAD CORE 1333FSB DDR2 SATA2 ATI Radeon 4870 1GB DDR5 from Sapphire Antec 550 watt PSU 2GB PC2 6400 800Mhz DDR2 RAM Windows XP SP3 I'm playing with the most up-to-date drivers for the card as well. I'm surprised you can't max it. I would try updating the drivers. Also, Blizz will almost surely be releasing patches optimizing the game's use of computer resources so it may get better.

Your graphics/cpu should be able to run sc2 on a mediumish setting I think, you might need some extra ram though. You defiantly will not be able to play at 1920x1080 incase you're wondering.

Oh, sorry. I run SC2, and I have not joined a game yet, but the game will often crash even in the regular mernu. I've only loaded sc2 twice, but on both accounts it has crashed. My computer's historically been a bit unstable, but recently its been slightly better. Would getting new ram/chanigng my desktop resolution help? Going from a 1900 resolution to a 1600 resolution would make a noticeable difference in performance. Also, it says you have 0.999 system memory. That doesn't make any sense to me. You should have at least 4 gig of memory.

Ram: G.skill Pi Oced to 1066 GPU: ATI MSI 5770 HAWK(I won it :D) oced to Core:850->1050 Ram:1200->1350Mhz off 1.2v nice card MSI really bringing back my trust MSI was shitty awhile back really burned alot of ppl but it's bring back quality i'd even start to put MSI up there with ASUS and Gigabyte in terms of super high end mobo's and graphic cards now. HDD: Seagate 7200.12 in ACHI Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Settings:Full Ultra ofc FPS a constant 60FPS i caped it at 60 but i don't get many dips in performance and it's usually only down to 55 My old 8800GTS 640mb could only get me 20-30fps

I rljust got my 2 2GB sticks replaced after waiting for about 2 weeks for OCZ to RMA them. I am going to borrow the 4870 from work again on Monday and see if the RAM really was the issue. I really hope so because if it's not I have no clue what would be the cause of me not playing at Ultra with the 4870! I'll reply back with an update... @Savio Sounds like our symptoms are slighly different with the PSU issues. Mine tends to lock up my pc and I have to do a hard reboot. I've gone through several different PSU calculators and every single one was below 515 watts as a required PSU. So I think my 530 watt PSU should be okay with the 4870. Also, a friend of mine has the same 4870 GPU and the exact same 530 watt PSU and hasn't had any issues with it. I'm going to test my new RAM out and see if it fixed my problem! Thanks for your help everyone.

4gb ram geforce 9500M (512 mb dedicated) resolution 1366x780 windows 7 x64 runs everything on ultra except shaders (medium ) at constant 50 fps replays don't run as well, shaders set to low, not-so-constant 60 fps

So I got my RMA'd RAM back on Saturday and borrowed my works 4870 and tried playing on Ultra Settings. I only played one practice game and it worked fine, no lockups or freezes. So, maybe my bad stick of RAM was the issue??? I then played 1v1 vs a Zerg AI on 1680X1050 Ultra Settings and did not experience any of my previous issues. So...looks like I'm set to play!!! Thanks everyone for your advice! However, the card did sound like it was about ready to take flight during the whole time I was playing. Is this common for the 4870? CPUID said temps never got above 71C.

It also looks like the CPU benchmarks are going to be a bit harder since none of the CPU benchmarks I find have any RTS benchmarks ><

I've used CPUZ and Dell's site to nail down most of the specifics (mid-tower gx620; Dell 0F8098 motherboard; Intel Pentium 4 630 (Prescott) 3GHz processor; 305W power supply; 1GB RAM) and used Newegg's power supply calculator to determine that, as is, the system requires up to 295W. Adding something along the lines of a 4650 bumps that up to ~350, which means I need a new power supply (unless I'm missing something; is there a huge difference between newegg's listing and actual use?). I'm looking to spend as little over $100 as possible (this cuts into my new comp fund :/) with the sole intent of being able to play SC2 on the lowest settings. What I'm currently looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150396 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008. I recognize that the GT 240 as a Shell Shocker right now would be less expensive after rebate, but I hate mail-in rebates as a concept and it's more expensive up front. I expect anything much higher on the video card spectrum (maybe even the one listed, for that matter) will probably be bottlenecked elsewhere anyway, but if I'm missing something/have better options I'd be glad to hear it.

Though if you want to play SC2 at lowest settings, a 4650 is not required. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127458 HD 4550. I wouldn't recommend buying it simply because it isn't worth it to upgrade your computer, but if you want to, it's an option. And yes, Newegg and other sites tend to overestimate the amount of power you need by a bit to make sure you have some extra headroom.

Actually, the calculator says the system should only require 301W with the 4550, so I should be able to skip the PSU, as well...hopefully. I'll grant it's not a very good way to do things, but $50 bucks now for the added enjoyment for the next few months works for me. Thanks for the help!
