Interesting quote from the FAQ:
How long will the invitational ladder tournament run?
The invitational ladder is scheduled to run for three weeks. There will then be one offline regional qualifier event for each region, which will all feed into the global finals.
It's a shame that something like this would be hard to do for SC, simply because it'd almost have to involve the acknowledgement of ICCUP, not to mention it would literally be 100% koreans
Oh well, there'll be keys a plenty soon enough I'm sure.
Don't make stupid posts about how unfair this is and how WC3 sucks. If by some miracle they end up giving all their keys to WC3 players in the end, feel free, but I'm willing to bet a lot of money that won't happen.

To be clear, Blizzard is taking the participants of last year's invitational ladder (which is basically a qualification to the "grand finals" for the year) and removing the bottom 100 players, adding the top 100 players from each current ladder (USEast, Europe, Asia). The top 20 players from each ladder, so 60 players, will apparently get a SC2 beta key.
edit: changed the tense so it's accurate

lol Blizzard makes the most of their past games until its last seconds

I see my goal, i will train nonstop in warcraft3 to win those beta keys O_O;!

The new ladder season hasn't started yet.. it will in the next couple weeks I think.
It was supposed to reset on the 2nd of March.. but it hasn't..
After it starts, you have to make invitational ladder.. which is fairly easy if you are decent, and then you have to top20 the invitational ladder, which is VERY hard.

Oh you're correct. I saw this here and I thought that those were new games. I guess it makes sense because those are a lot of games

Surely they could use the TSL ranks couldnt they? As far as recruiting korean players, they would be aiming at striking up deals with proteams rather than jumping on Iccup I think.

Getting to the top of the invitational ladder is VERY hard if any of the old players decide to try their luck, and I'd bet many of them will purely for the beta key.
Actually getting to the invitational ladder isn't really that hard, and getting top 20 on it comparatively isn't too difficult either, but if this season is anything like previous seasons (and due to the heavy decline of the scene as of late it very well may not be), then there will be several players massing games like it's their job. That's what makes it so difficult, most people don't have the time, and if they do they usually aren't that good. Those that have the time and are good make the ladder a living hell for the players who really want to qualify.
As I said though, relatively speaking top 20 isn't TOO hard, but it will still be no easy task by any means. I'd personally love to give this thing a shot myself, but it's been too long since I've seriously played the game and I have way too many classes and other obligations to try and out-mass a lot of the younger kids out there. Not too mention it just gets so stressful at times, even if you're a really good player you'll get matched up against the best players quite a lot and just get crushed. Not a very enjoyable experience for someone who's only in it for the beta key.
EDIT: Just to clarify some, these invitational ladders are nothing like the normal ladders most players here may or may not be familiar with, for a lot of reasons such as a VAST skill difference. All those guys who play really hard and prefer to custom game over the terrible ladders? Yeah, they pop out and show you just how little your rank means. Being rank 1 on all 4 servers could mean you're at the bottom of the invitational ladder (that's a bit of an exaggeration as this has never actually happened, but it's entirely plausible). As well as that, the ladder takes place on a fixed, short time-period meaning people will be massing hard. It's not something you can just casually do like on the normal ladders. If you don't play hard every day, you're behind, and usually not by a little bit. There's really no comparison at all if this season is anything like the previous ones. However, I wish anyone who tries the best of luck

Haha wish I was good at WC3 so I could have a chance to get on a SC2 beta key...

Time to pull out WC3 again.
Not like i'm any good or anything....

Oh yeah, I'm aware of how hard (virtually impossible) it would be to get into the top 20. Unless the ladders now have a lot more activity, it shouldn't take much more than time to get into the top 100 I would think. But how much time, is a good question. It'd probably take me like 250 games or something, because I doubt I could manage over a 55ish% win percentage, which would take a number of games to hit level 32-33
|
Yeah, top 100 should be easy
It's the invitational ladder where all things really start to get tough.
|
Not like it will happen but _if_ some kind of worldwide bw tournament was run where the top 100 got sc2 beta keys people like mondragon and jf would have a better chance getting a key playing this ladder instead >< (still an extremly small chance obv) I'm not sure if that's funny or sad.

The top 50 in each of the Lordaeron and Azeroth realms will comprise the 100 ranked ladder players from the Americas.
The top two players from the Americas and the top three players each from Europe and Asia will be invited to the global finals. This will result in a total of eight players for the global finals. Haha, Blizzard knows where the good guys are :p It is well knows that Europe and Asia got harder ladders than the American ones.

finally a wc3 post!
I think it's wierd that only progamers will be able to win SC2 keys since 80% of the wc3 pros will continue with wc3 and not switch

A lot of WC3 pros have been asked if they are going to switch to SC2. I don't know of any that said they will continue to play WC3.

im level 21 in solo, so yeah give me a weeka nd i'll get to top 50 in no time guys, npnp then i'll share the key and become a hero nvm, i just remembered why i didn't like playing warcraft 3

This proves it, Blizzard doesn't give a crap about the SC community. Where are OUR beta keys? We're the ones fucking looking forward to the game the most and have the most knowledge about how it works.
