AfreecaTV have started a crowdfunding program on Patreon in order to supplement the GSL prize pool. The Patreon offers a variety of benefits to supporters, the most notable of which are match replays from the GSL. For the first day of Code S, replays were released within hours of the stream's conclusion.
GSL commentator State said that 100% of the Patreon funds would go toward the tournament prize pool.
AfreecaTV are also providing similar benefits to viewers who purchase the platform's internal currency of "Star Balloons." The conversation ratio for Star Balloons is 10 Star Balloons to $1 USD (may differ by region).
AfreecaTV included a statement on their Patreon page, addressing the need for crowdfunding due to GSL's drastic contraction in 2023.
We are GSL. We've been running a successful league for 14 years.
All of these successes and footprints were possible because of your support. Thank you again for your great support.
We are fully aware of your concerns and regrets about the reduction in the size of GSL prize money and competition this year.
In addition, we recognized there is a need for crowdfunding.
Accordingly, GSL hopes to take the next step which will create together with you.
Your help will be a great support in leading GSL this year and in the future. We also prepared rewards based on the sponsorship.
Compared to your support for 14 years, it's not enough reward, but we'll be a GSL step forward with you.
Thank you.

Crowfunding for prize pool make me sad.... I m too old for understand but isn t advertising which are supposed to pay prizepool ?

Redesignign the entire game like you proposed multiple Times allready isn t going to happen. There is no manpower at Blizzard that even knows how to do that

to be honest, it was nice living off the loose change that fell out of Blizzard's pocket

That was never the case, blizzard shelled up for most of the prize money. Its possible that the situation was different in the brood war era but I dont know.

I understand, I really do. But this makes me extremely sad.

Be Gone sadness!
I look at it this way:
I have enjoyed watching free SC content for what seems like my whole life.
Now its still free, but I see this as a chance for me to give back and in a way say thanks for all the content which has filled my soul all these years. Every Tastosis joke and marine split over the years.
Considering that, I think I will give 5 - 10 dollars a year at least. I hope lots of others can do the same and it adds up.
SC is a community, not just a consumer base :D

I will be sure to send them a few bucks!
Ps: I wish they didn't said the 100% into the prize pool thing, I wouldn't mind paying for the staff and stuff if they can't go on without it.

This feels like a return to an older era, GSL has gone PPV in the past after all.

I mean, it sucks that it can't be paid for with ads and sponsorships but at the same time, it's not gonna kill me to donate 10 or 20 dollars at the beginning of every season. That's lunch at Del Taco for a day or two, easy peasy.
|
this is so sad i almost rather stop watching sc2 altogether and just have 2023 iem be the glorious and respectful conclusion sc deserves, instead of watching the scene wither away into atrophy. to everyone else surprised, i dont think the unit economics of sc2 has made sense since like 2017 tbh, it was always heavily subsidized. That said I will give this year, but unlikely indefinitely going forward.
|
It's all for the players prize pool, so I don't really mind directly supporting the players, but I just can't see how a player could ever sustain themselves off of the peanuts of GSLs prize pool. Even winning 1st place ($7500 USD) every single season would likely not equate to minimum wage. If you got top 4 every season you would not even have $10,000 USD.
Sort of ridiculous to think they probably are making more money from weekly cups than GSL.

Just purchased the G5L $1000 membership! The StarCraft gods have sent me a message. They truly want me to be at this LIVE semi-finals/grand finals event. I am heading to Korea on the 6th because my wedding is on the 13th. How fucking amazing is it that I get to watch the game that I love with all my heart, with my new wife?! ><

I subbed to the $30 tier to support GSL and KR players.
I'm underwhelmed at this kinda sad Patreon though. For one it's completely insane that it doesn't actually say anywhere on the Patreon itself that 100% of the money goes to prize pool. I'm trusting State/Tasteless of course but that needs to be added to the actual Patreon somewhere asap. In addition to this it should explain in detail how the money will be split. What percentage of money raised goes to each placement in the event.
The tiers are poorly thought out. The fact that there's no tier equivalent to the $10-$15/month cost of a typical streaming service is mind boggling.
The whole YouTube/Afreeca controversy was poorly planned and I feel like that took some of the wind out of the sails of this Patreon. If they wanted to do that they should have announced it weeks ago and have the controversy mostly over before the Patreon launch.
The rewards are pretty disappointing. At least the $1,000/month tier should get merch or something big. If they don't want any physical items tied to the Patreon even something like the chance to choose player interview questions for the higher tiers would be cool. Or for the 1k tier a chance to play 2v2s with a pro and fan on each team. There's a lot of unique rewards they could do even if they've ruled out physical merch. Hopefully they're planning to launch a merch shop separate from this for additional funds.

Also the patreon is at 5k allready. That means after 1 day they raised 60k for the entire year. With the original total pricepool beeing 25k x 3 the comunity has almost doubled it allready
|
The tiers could be further optimised for sure, but I think this is a great idea. It lets people who want to support the content show their support, without putting everything behind a paywall for those who don't want to pay/can't afford it.
|
I love you all and will try to the $30 one. LONG LIVE SC2! <3

Call me contrarian, but that seems absolutely unacceptable to me. And I am rather shocked by how some people are ecstatic to participate in this. Saying that something is "free" in 2023 is a rather naive outlook. It would make more sense if you donate to a players or even players you like, but a company such as AfreecaTV strongarming its viewers is just scummy behavior.

If 100% of the donated funds go to the prizepool, it all goes to the players. I think it's a good thing, and considering they did put on a fantastic show for 14 years, give them some credit. The only thing I don't like is how they cucked their youtube broadcast.
|
Its not much, but i went for the $5 membership. But I think I will increase to 30 in a couple of month after parental leave is over
I almost feel ashamed i didnt go for the $30 immideately since I have enjoyed sc2 so much for so long. However, i will not say its been "for free" since i have been consistently subbing and donating to many people.

I for my part feel privileged to have received so much free entertainment over the last 14 years and will definitely do my part in giving back. They (hopefully) won't keep the crowdfund money in their pockets so the purpose of the crowdfund is just to ensure our favorite players can keep making a living out of this, and the show can go on. This is not about Afreeca but about the survival of the scene

How exactly are they strongarming the viewers? It's completely optional and doesn't impact the viewership at all.
And without it, look at what happened to the GSL. Most likely without it this is the last year of GSL. With this there might be a chance.
|
Can't say it's ideal, but definitely worth to wring every bit of Starcraft out of the proverbial orange while we can. Count me in--really great to see the support the community's been willing to offer so far. Every bit counts!
|
Somebody has mentioned that doing this has actually now HURT Afreeca viewership because now streamer get the replay pack from Patreon and will cast it on Twitch/Youtube immediately.
|
What I don't understand (and wondered about since SC remaster) is why Afreeca isn't trying to advertise for foreign viewers. Koreans do not give a f**k about SC2, foreign viewers do. So why not target foreign viewers with English ads in the English streams? Isn't there (way?) more non-Korean viewers than Korean?
|
I remember being subscribed to GommTV's GSL website and being able to watch the VODs in FULL 720p. I loved the way the website was laid out showing the brackets and all the possible games in spoiler tags so that even if a bo5 was one sided, you didn't know that until you clicked each possible match spoiler tag to reveal the VOD player.
I know GSL and sc2 isn't in the best of health atm, so £5 a month to join Code-A seems like a decent enough deal to me, I'll probably continue to watch vods on youtube because I'm lazy... but happy to give back (again) to the tournament I've been watching since 2010
|
At the time of writing this, there is 482 patrons with $12.2k per month. Assuming that it goes on for the rest of the year, about 8 months, this means that they have raised close to $100k for all of GSL this year for the prizepool alone? That is freaking amazing.
Any news on how they plan to divide that up?
|
I signed up for the 5 USD tier with the intention to keep it for a year, but I don't think I'll stay subbed unless they remove their stupid youtube overlay. I'm old and busy, sometimes the only time I have to catch some Starcraft is in public transports on my phone. I refuse to use their garbage platform when youtube works perfectly well on mobile devices.
|
It would be cool if they dropped their youtube frame saying Afreeca is the best viewing experience, when it seems foreigners are pretty much funding their prize pool now. Afreeca is not as good as twitch or youtube it is not the best viewing experience

Great idea. Even when "few" people donate it all adds up to a big increase. How much is it monthly at the moment?
ESL should do the same. Every penny is great at this point

i dont get why people should be upset they should be thankful that there are people out there that are willing to contribute their own money to see their hobby or interest should be successful nothing wrong in that, so whats there to be upset about?

This is a bummer, but not unsurprising.

What are the player profiles pictures?
I'm really happy to see the Patreon is so successful so far!! Doubling the prize pool is already HUGE, imagine first place winning $18k instead of $9k or whatever, that's way more sustainable. Not high but still a big help for sure.
Holy crap it's at $12,500 a month right now, that means we're getting like $150k more prize pool a year, $50k more a season...!!! We already TRIPLED the GSL prize pool!!! That means first place will win like $21k instead of $7500, meaning GSL prize pools will be close to what they were in 2022!!
|

Dude it's optional. They put this out here, in a hurry btw, because we asked them to, because the community asked to help donate to increase the prize pool because the truth is that GSL's prize pool is unsustainable for the players playing it and they will quit because it's not enough.
Afreeca isn't a huge company, they can't afford to give out the prize pools they did before on their own, SC2 in Korea isn't popular, it can't survive without foreign fan support.
The choices are this, you can either get more involved, or you can do nothing. No one is forcing you to get involved. But without more fan support like this Patreon, and it doesn't just HAVE to be this Patreon there are dozens of other ways you can support the players individually like you even alluded to, but without fan support GSL will not survive much longer. It was Blizzard's money that was keeping it going and that isn't coming back.

While I'm happy with the dollar amount I'm kind of sad about the number of people who have joined this. Group A vod on YouTube has over 60k views and yet only 700 patrons. That's barely over 1% of viewers. I hoped at least 5-10% of viewers would be willing to offer support. I know the Patreon isn't the best and voiced my thoughts on improvements earlier but still thought there'd get more participation. I don't think 12k+ monthly support is sustainable from 700 people.

How many YT views are from bots/indexers. Or from people without a credit card. Or people in the third world where spending $5USD is actually a huge deal. I don't think correlating YT views with # of patrons is important or matters.
Either way, great for Korean SC2.

that patreon is totally nuts. people spend on Tastosis almost 150.000$ a year only to CAST two tournaments (that are already available "for free" with other people casting or on Afreeca). there's zero added value to the scene, to the game and to the players for that money.
it's not like that money is keeping Brood War alive or the Afreeca tournament alive... it's all going into the commentators' pocket! The tournament would be exactly the same without that patreon.

Then dont assuming "many people are going to jump ship" just because you are, neither. To be honest, I am surprised that you find this to be so offensive to stop watching GSL. Thats the only point I am trying to make here, if that was an mis-understanding, then sorry for the post, lets move on.

Turns out that Afreeca will not be collecting from the Patreon during off months of GSL. I was planning to decrease my amount from $30 because that's a lot to commit every single month but since it will only be months where GSL is actually going I think I'll keep it. Posting this as a bump in case it motivates anyone else to donate a higher amount or keep a currently pledged higher amount.
|
Love GSL and happy to support them but I feel like they've messed up this fundraising thing time and time again, from waiting months to do it to starting it right after the YouTube screen debacle to now this (people not knowing how much they are actually donating)
|
Yeah, many people have stated how they feel that GSL has botched the communication for this process badly. Maybe they already collected enough the armount for this season and didnt want to exceed their goal per season.
|
Oh wow it's not including off months?? That's "noble" i guess but yeah probably lots of people are confused now. I thought they were raising $200k+ a year at this point but I guess not...
|
so, will S2 be 1 payment or 2? we can't know, as we don't know the dates yet and the tournament lasts less than 1 month

They did the Ro16 in Studio for season 2, except Gumiho for some reason probably illness played one match from home.
So Season 3 will likely be the same, Ro16 onward from Studio. Although I don't think there's been an official announcement for it yet. We'll probably know more when the qualifiers are announced.

That was due to the flooding in South Korea, so all trains was cancelled and GumiHo was forced to play from home. And it was all his games on that day

Although I don't think there's been an official announcement for it yet. We'll probably know more when the qualifiers are announced.
I'm hoping so -- right now the TL page for season 3 says the group stages will be online and I hope that's not the case since I just moved to Seoul and was hoping to watch live Starcraft for the first time.

Does anyone know how much the 1st place prize for GSL was (in seasons 1 and 2) when including the crowd funded money? I haven't seen the actual number posted anywhere and I've been a subscriber since this whole thing began.
