On this day in 2010, Wings of Liberty was released and nerds rejoiced everywhere. We have come a long way since then but the GSL is still here and the new EPT promises at least three more years of pro Starcraft.
As for the casual gamers, LotV peaked at almost 300k games per day in June, which is about double the average of LotV from 2016 and 2017 -- before the game became free to play. Even though the covid pandemic factors in to this, Starcraft 2 is still more popular than it were for years, and it has rebounded from the reduced popularity it suffered at the end of 2019 (*cough* balance team *cough*).
The developers at Blizzard has just released a major patch with an overhaul of the Map Editor as well an a bunch of other improvements. Not quite a ded gaim yet.
Happy birthday everyone! Let's have another 10 years. Or at least until SC3 is released
It's really hard for me to realize it already has been 10 years. With the amounts of viewers and players, one would think the game is just a few years old.
Happy to confirm this is a fresh thread and not a bump of an older thread. Only mildly depressed it's still been 10 years. A long strange 10 years it's been.
Happy birthday SC2. just been getting back into the game and it feels like it's in a better place than ever. SC2 really has survived a lot and managed to mature into a really wonderful and stable game even though the birth of the Twitch era of esports.
Seriously don t know, so genuine question: Is there any game as sucessfull as SC2 right now, that is older than 5 years? Speaking esports, games played/day and Numbers of active players.

LoL, DotA 2, and CS:GO are all over that old. It's very impressive how successful SC2 is for its age, though.

I'd say for a single-player game (not to mention the nearly extinct genre of competitive RTS) it's the most successful esports-wise.
this game and this community represent so much for so many people's life. I remember the day i bought the game at the very first day it came out and i was so worried my old laptop couldn't handle it. So much memories HB and thanks everyone !
I used to watch my brother play bw as a kid but I was too dumb to understand multi so I only played customs vs AI or used cheat codes in the campaign to know the story. In 2007 he showed me the first battle reports of starcraft 2 and never have I anticipated a release so much.
As soon as it came out I got 2 copies for him and me, then proceeded to live and breathe sc2 for years. Discovering esport was incredible, and most communities I hang out with to this day are still linked to this game. I may not always follow it as much, but it helped me through tough times and is easily my most important game of all time.
Happy 10 years everyone! Happy Birthday Starcraft 2!
