On this day in 2010, Wings of Liberty was released and nerds rejoiced everywhere. We have come a long way since then but the GSL is still here and the new EPT promises at least three more years of pro Starcraft.
As for the casual gamers, LotV peaked at almost 300k games per day in June, which is about double the average of LotV from 2016 and 2017 -- before the game became free to play. Even though the covid pandemic factors in to this, Starcraft 2 is still more popular than it were for years, and it has rebounded from the reduced popularity it suffered at the end of 2019 (*cough* balance team *cough*).
The developers at Blizzard has just released a major patch with an overhaul of the Map Editor as well an a bunch of other improvements. Not quite a ded gaim yet.
Happy birthday everyone! Let's have another 10 years. Or at least until SC3 is released
It's really hard for me to realize it already has been 10 years. With the amounts of viewers and players, one would think the game is just a few years old.
Happy to confirm this is a fresh thread and not a bump of an older thread. Only mildly depressed it's still been 10 years. A long strange 10 years it's been.
Happy birthday SC2. just been getting back into the game and it feels like it's in a better place than ever. SC2 really has survived a lot and managed to mature into a really wonderful and stable game even though the birth of the Twitch era of esports.
Seriously don t know, so genuine question: Is there any game as sucessfull as SC2 right now, that is older than 5 years? Speaking esports, games played/day and Numbers of active players.

LoL, DotA 2, and CS:GO are all over that old. It's very impressive how successful SC2 is for its age, though.

I'd say for a single-player game (not to mention the nearly extinct genre of competitive RTS) it's the most successful esports-wise.
this game and this community represent so much for so many people's life. I remember the day i bought the game at the very first day it came out and i was so worried my old laptop couldn't handle it. So much memories HB and thanks everyone !
I used to watch my brother play bw as a kid but I was too dumb to understand multi so I only played customs vs AI or used cheat codes in the campaign to know the story. In 2007 he showed me the first battle reports of starcraft 2 and never have I anticipated a release so much.
As soon as it came out I got 2 copies for him and me, then proceeded to live and breathe sc2 for years. Discovering esport was incredible, and most communities I hang out with to this day are still linked to this game. I may not always follow it as much, but it helped me through tough times and is easily my most important game of all time.
Happy 10 years everyone! Happy Birthday Starcraft 2!

WoW is also there altough its posicion as a current successful e-sports can be argued.
Best game ever! I easily get bored with stuff, so i have always assumed that "next year" i probably will watch and play way less sc2, but so far it has never happened =)

Happy 10th!! I remember being so hyped when I watched Day9 and DJWheat's countdown stream the day before. Amazed that I'm still enjoying it this much today.
10 years ago I saw a random HuskyStarcraft video on the front page of youtube and clicked on it because I was looking for a new game. Little did I know how much that would change things. What a decade.
Still remember bringing my computer with to Vacation Bible School so I could start installing SC2 right after I picked it up from gamestop. And then promptly void ray rushing the crap out of my opponents

There are holiday bonus points for playing a game. The irony though, is that the server is down for maintenance.I guess they wanted the 10 year anniversary to feel like a typical Blizzard Launch day where you can't get on the server to play games.
Shoutout to the people who made the game what it was for me....everyone at Greedy Gaming, MageOfDead, Audacity, nukerz, safetyman, and of course Ultradoomslaya/palofchaos...we had some goods back in the day, with all those clan wars
When SC2 came out the summer before my junior year of college, I bought it immediately and recruiting my best friend from childhood, who was then in the Army, and another best buddy from high school, who'd just moved in with me, and we spent 2-3 weeks playing 3v3s as 3 terrains doing reaper rushes.
It was so stupid.
Between cheesing the crap out of people we'd watch the early GSL games, qualifiers for IEM etc. on my laptop that I hooked up to our TV. Some of the best times.
What a long, strange journey it's been. Always loved Brood War and was so stoked when SC2 came out. From watching Idra GG out of a likely win to Fruitdealer surprising the crap out of everyone, to Steppes of War in general and then marveling at MVP crushing nerds, this game has continued delivering for 10 years after that initial magic.
Super grateful to the community and casters that continue to support this game a decade later. The SC franchise is truly a unicorn in the competitive scene.
We're not getting old guys, we're just more mature now
I still remember my smooth transition from war3 to sc2, it was a pleasure. And I'm proud to be a part of such complex, smart and incredible community!
Happy BDay StarCraft2! This is our celebration as well. Let's not forget those who made this game as great as it is (Mike Morehime, David Kim, Dustin Browder and co), and we will never forget those who left us too young (TotalBiscuit and iNcontrol).
ESL, DH, TakeTV and GSL are also doing their parts, thanks to casters/hosts (It could be a bit list starting from Apollo, Day9, Tastosis and ending with people who carry the torch right at this moment) we love and follow.
I'm going to share probably one of my favourite StarCraft 2 moments of all time. Sorry for being shameless, but when I read everyone's thoughts on the game's history a wry smile appeared on my face, remembering this gem; I could only imagine the reaction of Zest.
I only got into Starcraft recently, but it's already made such a huge impact on my life. As a high school student, nobody I know irl plays sc, it's all LoL or Valorant or CoD. It's surreal to me to see the sheer amount of notice it's getting today, but it feels sentimental nonetheless. (even though I was 4 when it first came out!) My dad played the campaign during nights during a good majority of my elementary school years, and I remember spending hours sitting on a cheap fold-up chair watching aliens on a screen fight, going to bed at near midnight and being as quiet as possible creeping up from the basement in hopes that my mom wouldn't wake up. It's insane how much this one little game I thought my dad only played affected everyone, it's honestly amazing. Last year, I decided to search back up the game out of pure nostalgia, and I had no idea how much I'd get hooked. I can't describe the feeling bingewatching a playthrough of the campaign over 7 days and being completely pulled in the entire time. And then I discovered the pro scene... and I've been absolutely hooked ever since. Happy 10 years Starcraft, and I hope for many more.
i thought Browder , Sigaty et al were great. However, this "we're in the final stretch" comment had me crawling the walls waiting for SC2. The "final stretch" was announced in February 2009.
I remember never knowing anything about Starcraft in 2010. It was August, and I watched my cousin watch a video where one race was beating the other race until the one race got this thing called a "Viking" out that beat back the thing I now know is a "Voidray."
Happy 10 years! I remember when it first came out I played the crap out of it, don't play this game anymore but there will always be fond memories of it
Starcraft gave me great moments, great memories and great friends.
I look back at all the times I spent watching the MLG. When I stayed up at night watching the GSL in the shitty GOM player, and when incredible moment's happened and legends were made.
Starcraft made me happy. And although now ladder causes me anger and anxiety, it's still for me one of the greatest games of all time. Not just because of the game itself, but the community and the esports. thanks for the happy memories guys.
Can anyone confirm if the "Contract Saviors" (Mobius Core map, Raynor campaign) achievement is broken? I swear I'm only training SCVs, medivacs, and Mercs. Maybe it counts as "trained" when you rescue other guys? Or maybe the bunker counts??
It's been while, always ducking in and out. I mostly play co op now, if I play at all, and find myself watching broodwar more these days, as I personally find it more interesting.
Fun times, fun memories. Going to watch a bit of ep 99 of State of the Game.
iNcontroL and TB together... good times, life was simpler and happier then...
Time flies! Happy anniversary, would've wished for a bit more stuff, but at least we get something. And hopefully we get a 'force default skins' option clientside for the 20th!!!
Congratulations to blizzard. Starcraft is the only franchise that havent been screwed over, or made fun of by Blizzard. May Starcraft franchise last forever AMEN.
Opened up some pretty cool doors of opportunity, for that I say thank you Starcraft 2.
As much as I hate WOL, it was definitely cool to go to tournaments and meet friends and all sorts of fun opportunities. I just wish to God they would've added chat channels (was added in HOTS), allow you to watch replays with friends (HOTS) instead of sync up on vent or skype, and got rid of bl/infestor instead of watching all the semi pros and amateur players move on because the game was so stagnant. HOTS wasn't much better in terms of balance and response to that, but LOTV is more decent.
I love the idea of SC2, and there was a lot of great moments, I'll remember that, but fuck WOL lol
Love starcraft 2, it is indeed crazy that the game is so old and yet is very alive and kicking.
I think Starcraft 3 is going to come, Blizzard has shown they are not willing to keep tossing away money that doesn't give enough return (HoTS) so if they are keeping SC2 around its because they got a plan to earn money off of it. I just really hope SC3 ends up being the kind of game I want to immerse myself in and follow for as long as I've followed SC2.
Happy birthday Starcraft 2! These 10 years you've always been a constant supply of good emotions. Don't worry if you feel mature, we also do. I hope we'll stay together for many, many years to come. Much love!
<3 StarCraft 2 + BW for so many reasons. Along with the usual things, it taught me the importance of hotkeys when using computers in general when I was a kid, today I'm the fastest music producer I know (have my own macros) and also design software with a focus on workflow and efficiency. So you could say the hotkey+efficiency thing had an impact on me.
