Oups, can this be move to blog?
Edit: it can be in general too, your call mod (but you better make the right choice )

I think this might be a nice discussion in SC2 General though!

Year of birth is the deciding factor, isn't it? That'd put alive in the same boat as the others aged 27, apart from Classic

The issue as most everyone is likely aware is that it's difficult for the korean SC2 scene to replace the players lost to military service.
That being said I suppose the easiest way to bring new blood into the korean SC2 scene is to send all the old blood off to the military and see what happens next.
|
KeeN said that he is doing his military service too. 2019 GSL season 3 was his last season I think.
|
GSL really won't be the same by 2021. Even 2020 just losing Classic, Keen and Gumiho is so huge.
|
I can't imagine a world without Stats, he has consistently been solid on all 3 MUs, which is very very rare for a protoss

The number of silvers and golds among the 27 year olds is crazy.

On the plus side if we get to 2022-23 one of Impact-Huricane-Bunny-Ragnarok-Trust-Patience or Creator should finally deliver on it's potential and win a GSL. That or Maru win every GSL until he's literally the only player left in the tournament.

It's depressing to think that many of the greatest korean players will leave us so soon. If we're lucky when they return SC3 will be on the horizon.
|
So that means all those 27 years old progamers will not be able to play next year? Or the year after next year?

Leenock and Keen are currently under the army; you forgot MC(July 1991), and LosirA was born in 1992.
All those 27 years old progamers will be at in Classic's shoes in 2020 at least(or worse, since Classic's birthday comes very late in the year).

This is good news. Hopefully after the elites of korean sc2 goes to military, the region lock will be abolished and korean scene will nurture with a lot of new talents.

How do Koreans themselves feel about military service? Never really hear opinions or thoughts on it from my limited exposure to Koreans, namely this game.
|
The impending service list is an impoverishment of the progamer scene. (Not GuMiho too!!)
I can only hope the next wave will be as awesome.
I appreciate Nakajin starting this thread so we have some advance warning to psychologically prepare.

Thought Zest was exempt since he was injured or something?

Most amateur and low-level koreans do not have the financial means to travel to overseas events as it is now, and I have serious questions about whether they could even compete against the current generation of foreign players to make it financially viable to travel to overseas events.
Foreign events are no longer "easy money" for the low-level koreans. This is particularly true for young amateur korean players.

We haven’t seen much of it lately, but peripheral occasional Code S Ro32 players have not stacked up well against good foreigners in the games I’ve watched when it occurs.
This is a marked difference from the days that 32 spots wasn’t enough to hold all the Korean talent that would be a tier above almost all foreigners.

Polt said on his stream that Korean military sucks and that a lot of people that are forced to serve don't really like it. But that's only one opinion.

Probably older than 27 in some cases. E.g. Flash from Brood War. He hasn't done his military service yet.

I agree region lock will not help the korean SC2 amateur scene directly. That being said it will help the top of the scene at this point and this could help incentivize more young players to join the scene.

I don't really know if 27 is the oldest age but I heard that korean age 30 (which is around 28 right?) is oldest before you can delay your military. I'm pretty sure many BW pros left later than their 27s.

Is Classic allowed to play for the Blizzcon this year? Anyone knows? It will affect whether TY is eligible to play as a backup

Btw is it really true that the 27-year olds will have to go "this year or somewhere during next year"? Seems Classic was able to push it to after the Starcraft season ends, so why not soO, Stats etc?

It would be nice to know how much of next year the 1992-guys get to play.

It's much more fluid than this. Jaedong is 30 years old and is expected to go to the army soon(he has for years, but it seems like he is not allowed to travel now), while Keen had to go being 25(he said he "messed up" with his request of delay).
As far as I understood, they can't delay their enlistment further than their 28th birthday and they are forbid to travel abroad when close enough to that date. When exactly one begins his military service has to be arranged personally.
Thus said, there are for sure korean people on Team Liquid who way more informed than me on that topic.

Anyone else coming back from the military soon? When does soO finish his service?

I totally understand why it’s a thing, in the wider scheme of things our wee scene doesn’t mean much, but it’s a shame to see so many of the players who made it great and we bonded over have to depart.
Any word on Trap/Rogue? Will they have to depart at some particular time, or will it be like Zest where it was known he was to depart but he managed to play the whole season in the end?
|
Trap / Rogue will be big losses especially, both players capable of pushing deep into tournaments / winning them if things break right. It has been said before but it is sad there isn't a burgeoning crop of young Korean stars to root for (go Percival!); however it does seem like a 2 year break is short enough that programers can still come back at compete, if not at quite the highest level.

soO's service should end soon, but I suspect he might return to Brood War instead of SC2. I know soO & InnoVation were seen "casually" playing in a couple of the ASL qualifiers before they went off for their service.
