With the first week of 2018 GSL Season 1 in the books, Rogue (on his birthday!), Scarlett, Billowy (now known as DoKyung) and aLive met to determine the next two players to reach the Round of 16.
Rogue opened the day with a one sided 2-0 over DoKyung. A ravager/ling all in put him up a game, while mutalisks played a critical role on Ascension to Aiur. Along with zerglings and banelings, they whittled away at DoKyung’s defenses, slotting Rogue into the winners' match.
Scarlett took a 1-0 lead against aLive, but failed to close out the series. Game two went to the extreme late game, but aLive's ghosts were able to save him despite losing most of his production. A lethal tank push in game three set up a winners' match between aLive and Rogue.
Rogue rushed to ultralisks in game one, but aLive brought the game to a sudden end with a tank/bio/liberator push that killed Rogue's fourth. aLive's hellbat opening did little damage in game two, but the subsequent bio/tank aggression stretched Rogue too thin and earned a concession.
DoKyung’s stalkers saved his carriers from brood lord/corruptor in game one, but Scarlett weathered his adept pressure before evening the series with a hydra/bane counterattack. Game three went late, but lurkers and brood lords were enough to put Scarlett on top.
Rogue's early pool opening didn't do much in his first game against Scarlett, and neither did his 2-base attempt. Scarlett defended long enough to get to mutalisks, and Rogue, with no options left, conceded. Rogue was up four bases to three while harassing with lings in game two, but his bane/muta army proved impotent against Scarlett's roach/hydra/infestor army, so Scarlett ultimately took the game and advanced, knocking out the reigning WCS World Champion.

Well this just settles mizenhauer's thread about Rogue's legacy.

Rouge is a patchzerg tbh
Btw, i'm pretty positive the Top 5 westerners outside of Scarlett/Special (Neeb, Serral, Elazer, Nerchio, Snute) would give a very good look in GSL nowadays

What Scarlett is showing is called courage and I am afraid, except of Neeb and Special, they do not have it. Why has not Nerchio ever tried to qualify for GSL? Because he does not want to be publicly embarrassed in front of millions of fans. Well, and Scarlett is risking this each time. She has the courage to eventually be embarrassed in front of all the fans. And this time, she was not embarrassed!

Rogue was the one who failed a 13/12 against Scarlett in game 1.

They fixed it with this:
Rogue's 13/12 didn't do much in his first game against Scarlett, but her attack off two bases did - it took the game for her.
That is still wrong though, Scarlett never attacked in game 1, she just held off the 13/12, then rogue tried to follow up with a two base roach attack, which she held while getting mutas, and Rogue GG'd before she left her base with the mutas.
I also think Rogue went 12 pool into 14 gas

It's more the logistical issues and level of comfort you need to have to live in what is basically a totally alien country.
GSL is not just some tournament you fly to and back again over a week. You have to *live* in Korea for at least 3-4 months in order to get the proper amount of practice in. You're not going to go to other tournaments in the time you are there because it seriously fucks up your prep.
This also means that you are going to commit the entire year to GSL, basically. You will likely not be able to place for Blizzcon if you come back during the year.
GSL is a completely different ballgame to any other tournament out there due to how its structured. You are committing basically a full year of your life to one single SC2 tournament, living in a country literally on the other side of the world, geographically and culturally.
That Scarlett is willing to do this is commendable, but that others are not willing to do this says nothing whatsoever against them. Anyone would have problems leaving their entire life behind for 6-12 months for - Lets be honest - An extremely high chance of failure.

Congrats Scarlett. Advancing to the Ro16 as a foreigner in only 4 tries is impressive as hell to me. Scarlett still has so much potential too, im really excited what this win will do for her growth as a player.
|
When she was down a game to Billowy, I was really sure she'd tilt and it would be a repeat of some of her attempts last year. I'm more than impressed that she turned it around, it's really awesome.

But let's be honest, progressing into the RO16 is something so improbable that we are talking about one month relocation. And I believe, people like Nerchio just do not want to risk a Lilbow type embarrassment if they tried. Scarlett does not care, she tries.
EDIT: But the fact is that several people have tried and they all deserve respect. I do not mean Jake now, as he does not have any reputation to lose, he can only win. In that situation, it is psychologically easy to do that. But all the TOP foreign players, who risked it and came to the qualifiers, deserve acknowledgement.
Of course, Scarlett is a special case with her dedication to this cause and really living in that country. She just proves how a person can be successful if she dedicates everything to her dream.

Just watched the matches. Great play by Scarlett, she actually should have won against aLive as well. So happy she's through!

super impressed by aLive, i did not see him getting out in first place

ZvZ is a really bad matchup to deal with when you are the best zerg it seems.
Great performance Scarlett, gg, but it's bad for the ro16 I guess, she can't compete with the ro16 non zerg players unlike Rogue imo. ( just like Elazer at Blizzcon, he won against Dark but wasn't even able to deal with Major ... ).
But if it can bring more viewers
None of JinAir s players can be regular in his performances ...

From what I saw Rogue screwed up that last engagement really bad. Not saying he would have won the series if he won that game.

Yeah we all knew Rogue was a fluke...

Rouge had shit bane controll the whole series... idk why.

Alive looking legitemately great there actually. Didn't expect that from him at all.

So the emperors clothes article was well timed

According with terran players, foreigner zergs are successful because zerg is easy, so Scarlett vs Rogue was all staged.

Big props for qualifying. I think it's disrespectful and not really correct to call it luck but I thought all of her series were kinda weird. Against Alive she was throwing game 2 and consequently losing game 3. Dokyung messed up hard in game 3 where he threw a lot of his army into lurkers instead of using storms. Rogue's build order choices felt really bad and he looked really bad against alive. All in all, a deserved 2nd place in the group, coming back from the tilt that must have been game 2 against alive is a big improvement to her previous runs in gsl and showed some overall improvements.
Even though he topped the group I wasn't that impressed with alive in the first series. He showed the same style that failed him in the later half of 2017. Going to lategame against zerg without being that good at it. Dokyung was disappointing in the end, he showed much better play in online cups. He seemed a lot more confident in PvT and PvP before (even before the recent patch) so maybe that's that. Rogue I don't know what to say, strange ZvT and ZvZ strats, I'm not sure how he lost his confidence in standard play.

lol. No comment on the admins from me, though, i should look over the community guidelines in case
It's very nice to see a foreigner and a girl move through the GSL. The story can only get bigger if she goes further... any idea who she might be up against next?

Also, Inno holds the switch power this time.

I absolutely thought the same. Good on her for improving her focus in the face of incredible pressure. That's basically a requirement to advance in the GSL. Great games too!

It was her biggest hurdle for her in the past year or so, too, it seemed like she always crumpled when she was on the big stage and the pressure was on. She came back in incredible fashion and did something fantastic, though. Hopefully she can keep it up but this is a great start regardless

I can't find the rules right now (it used to be stickied I think? Not anymore), but I assume that fluff that does not add anything to the discussion warrants a warning. It's a little subjective, but most would probably agree that "First!" falls under that, and "Second" probably as well.

Great to see Scarlett advance further into the GSL. Here's to hoping a ro8 finish so she can get seeded for next season.
I'm still a bit skeptic about the aLive hype train though. They guy always performs fantastically until it's crunch time (around ro8/ro4). Almost feels like he has inherited the spirit of Bomber in many ways.

thats some bullshit i read ... to qualify for the event is already better then alot koreans who try and fail ... ift hey "dont have it" then they would not have qualified against all the koreans ... and for nerchio ... maybe just maybe he doesnt wanna live in korea all the time or want other tournaments same time ? ...

being in ro32 is already an archievment ... such comments normaly only come from master players who feel embarresed themself not reaching gm

Really sick final move from scarlett. I loved it
Good luck for the next round!

Congratulations to Scarlett!! I don't care if she didn't play perfectly, she fought her way into the Round of 16 and that is super impressive. That after match interview was super awkward though. They need to figure a better way to handle translation if she wins again. They should just have Tasteless or Artosis go down there and interview her and translate into Korean as they do it (seems that they are capable of it).

HAHAHAHA THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER! REKT BY SCARLETT, KNOCKED OUT ON HIS BIRTHDAY!
i hope he fades away into obscurity. go soo!!!!!!!

Well, in those series Scarlett showed me that she really belongs to the Code S level of play, winning or losing and aLive was a complete beast. I really feel all the guys here are ignoring the awesome decisions (yes, late, but still won him the game) in the second set. Scarlett was never ahead on that game, she didn't capitalize in her units advantage and the supply count was even almost all the game, aLive went for ghost, engaged in constant harras in the critical tool of Scarlett (Drones) while he waited for her to starve, something that got him the game. That was more an aLive achievement than a Scarlett failure.

I can't wait for the group selection.
