Regarding the paychecks: I have always thought it strange and bad that the winner gets much more money than the second place finisher. One player won 6 matches and earn this much, another player won 7 matches and gets twice as much. The difference is too big. I would like for the money to be distributed more evenly. Give some more to the Ro32 and less to the top 4!

Sad that Blizzard dont really care about sc2 anymore :

HGC=100K/team whatever happens

When HoTS was way more "dead" than SC2.

Use warchest money for something like that would be much more relevant

Actually most people don't understand that region lock is the reason why most foreigner pros pay their bills. And of course Blizz cares more about foreigners, they are the ones who make the game alive

Which must clearly be why the viewership numbers have been in the toilet since the Region lock started.

Do you have any data about what you are saying?
However Blizz probably has some sort of manager who studies these trends and does his best for the future of the game ...at least this is what I hope.

If we see a huge wave of retirements over the next few months in Korea, a legitimate argument could be made that GSL should drop from 32 players to 16.

RO16 is so stacked, so ro16 qualifiercould eliminate many good players if the format is so fickle, which is bad

Age of the game has much more effect on the viewership numbers than region lock ever could.

And it seems so damn ungrateful to complain and whine about prize money amounts when they aren't even obligated to support SC2 in the first place. A long time ago Blizzard didn't even have anything to do with the esports scene monetarily and it was all on the individual tournaments like Dreamhack and IEM to put forth all the effort on that side. That Blizzard's putting anything in is probably the only reason we still have tournaments.

It's kind of hilarious that just a day before the CIS caster mentioned that NoRegret probably won't even try to qualify, only for him to qualify from what arguably is one of the harder groups.

OTOH the fact that Neeb failed to qualify to Ro32 due to his PvP is... hilarious as well?

As for the complaints about the "low-tier" Koreans being cheated out of their "paychecks" - while I sympathize, it is a competition. If you want to be guaranteed money from a competition you have to be good enough to qualify, no? You can't just show up and get paid, that's not how a competitive scene works. Like Nadal or Federer can't go to the French Open and complain about missing a paycheck when someone knocks them out in the early rounds. I don't really get it but whatever, happy to see so many good players (new and old) in Code S, looking forward to the season ^_^. GGs all!

All you said is true, but it's unfair when Dreamhacks are region locked and GSLs are not.

If GSL is a competetion and nobody should be upset about stronger foreigners taking the spots of weaker Koreans, than it should be okay for Koreans to take the spots of weaker foreigners in the WCS circuit.

Either open up everything to everybody (much prefered solution) or protect both regions with region lock.

But the other way around would be unfair too. The reason so few foreigners are participating in the GSL is because it requires a commitment of time, money, and effort, whereas if you removed the region lock, it would require very little effort for a top Korean to participate in a few weekend tournaments. Additionally, the loser of all this, the low-tier Korean gets nothing from removing the region lock--all it means is that the scene becomes even more top heavy.

Trying to make the system 'fair' is meaningless. There's too many variables, too many different conditions. Trying to make the system 'better', i.e more likely to increase the health and longevity of the scene with considerations for the players and the viewers, is worth discussing, but first you have to toss out the ephemeral goal of achieving 'fairness'.

And the problem with having no region lock was that it was never the lower level Koreans winning the tournament (except maybe Impact). It was the top level Koreans stomping all the foreigners and taking top prize. So having no region lock would only serve to help the top Koreans. Cause as we see here, the foreigners are more than enough to beat lower level Koreans (and this is without including Showtime or Nerchio or Serral).

And while the GSL may not be "technically" region locked, you generally have to live in Korea to compete in that season of the GSL, which functionally makes it region locked.

If the Koreans want to live in the respective WCS region for the duration needed for WCS, then I have no problem with them competing in WCS (I realize the process is harder with the visa requirement)

I don't think the region-lock is the reason why viewer numbers are in the toilet. But it's just as stupid to say that foreigners make the game alive, there's absolutely zero evidence for that. Viewership-numbers don't support that claim at all.

jjakji, San, Stardust, Golden, Pigbaby, Patience, TLHerO could all be defined as lower-level koreans.

Really sucks that Byul didn't get in due to being in a group with Forte and Dear. And Trust missed out by losing to
Dark twice.

Meanwhile Time and Scarlett get a group with a failed overwatch player and a Zest who probably doesn't know what race he plays anymore.

I think the more apt question is "How could Impact lose twice to NoRegreT yet 2-0 Drogo?"

Because NoRegreT is a cheeselord and Impact didn't know beforehand (I assume). Whatever group he's in he will 0-4 without much doubt

Thing is.. compare how many people showed upto the Open bracket at DH Austin, then Jonköping and how many tried to qualify for GSL.

Foreigners are so needed.

I mean, technically Jonkoping is one of the first times on my memory when most of open bracket groups were not populated. I was in stasis since 2015, of course, but nonetheless.

Lol. Foreign players can now live in korea and get money from GSL, then fly over to dreamhack for a week and get a quick paycheck. Feel bad for the mid tier koreans, who are basically in the same skill range as top foreigners but get less than half the opportunities

So according to this thread 16+ Koreans in WCS NA didn't hurt the scene at all, but 5 foreigners in GSL have killed the entire Korean scene. Makes sense.

I wonder how you came to that conclusion. I don't think anyone said it in this thread, and even then, they're certainly not the majority.
