"Especially, Jessica said that she had supported everything about Boxer, including his team's transport and accommodation. She proceeded to tell the audience that she spent approximately $500K, throwing the audience into utter confusion."

Not a meaningful news, but at least we got to know that Slayers cost a bit of money.

It`s quite cheesy, but she got love; she`s damm rich, who once got $10K for allowance when she was a high-school girl.

edit: Still, I think Jess did nothing wrong. Just telling.

It's really a shame the SlayerS project didn't work out. They used their brand name really well to popularize their players, and left us with a lot of great memories.

That's quite a bit of money. Although it doesn't sound strange when you consider TotalBiscuit said he spent over $250,000 on Axiom. Running a team isn't cheap.
It's unfortunate that Slayers ended the way it did.

In German definitely, can't say for English. According to dict.leo.org it's just used for historic dates. Given its meaning I wonder why just for historic dates though.

I think the confusion here comes from the fact that it differs depending on the language. For english it seems to be used primarily for dates. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/circa says "Used only before a date or measure, never after" under usage, but on some of the other languages this note isn't present and it's just used as a synonym for about / approximately. Since money isn't a measure (or a date, obviously), it's probably not the correct usage in english.

Maybe I should add that since I'm not a language expert, or even a native english speaker, you shouldn't take what I say as fact.

This sure went off topic fast.

Yeah let's put it behind and spend half the thread discussing if the usage of "circa" by a non-native speaker was proper or not, instead of, you know, anything that has any actual significance to this game or its scene.

Maybe it's me trying to be an optimist, but was SlayerS really unsuccessful? They won multiple GSTLs, GSLs, and other premier tournaments, and at one point had 1/4 of the players in Code S. They were the start for so many iconic players (MMA, Taeja, Dark, etc. etc.)

Sure they disbanded in an unfortunate way, but in the world of eSports, that's almost the rule rather than the exception. IM is gone, EG is inactive, Prime is really dead, etc. But in the meantime, SlayerS left a massive legacy on Starcraft 2 and eSports.

Gives you an idea of how much it will take for esports to become self-sustaining. There's some sort of drama with LoL where a team coach who makes millions in revenue off league is criticizing Riot because he's still not self-sustaining.

And to think, with all that money they still couldn't treat Eve like a real player and let her actually practice rather than just be a mascot for the team. Honestly Eve was a better player when she started than she was when she left and went to Azubu.

A comedian turned actress who acted in various (5-6 showpieces) Korean TV dramas and movies, mostly in supporting roles.

you mean a movie that Jess casted?

The Foul King (Banchikwang, 2000) is the best, I suppose.

p.s. FYI, she had terrible acting; it was her first movie.

That half million gave us great games, great players, great uniforms, and most importantly the all-time biggest SC2 drama, so it was definitely worth it.

Question: Slayers had sponsors to begin with, when did it stop being (mostly) self-sustaining? Or was it ever?

I think the biggest hit to SlayerS is when they lost their Intel sponsorship, though it probably wasn't self-sustaining even with Intel.

Sustainable or not, Slayers has managed to groom sustainable talents - Dark, Taeja, Ryung, and even MMA (to a lesser extent - he shone brightly, but faded fast). Arguably the best ESL clan in terms of talent production?

I never quite followed the scandal and blow-up. Are any ex-Slayers players still in good terms with Boxer and Jessica? Or are they all like prodigal sons now?

EG only switched games and have one of the most successful dota2 teams, IM got massively fucked with the LG thing, however it does seem that most early sc2 teams (prime, ogs, tsl, slayers) never really knew how to make a successful business.

The sponsorship didn't kill SlayerS, the selfish players did. MMA thought Jessica and Boxer was taking his prize money. He also owed some money to his personal coach and when the coach asked him about the money, he threw an Nvidia card that he won from an online tournament at the coach.

It's surprisingly little money when you think that the team lasted almost two years and supported over 30 players over its life.

I'm surprised no one's said this yet, but that's really great that she invested so much money into Starcraft 2. Thanks Jessica! People like her were very much needed to keep SC2 competitive, especially in the pre-Kespa era.
Beauty is not the goal of competitive sports, but high-level sports are a prime venue for the expression of human beauty. The relation is roughly that of courage to war.

Because people only care for the drama, they never stop to think about it or understand the situation. That's one more thing that hasn't changed a bit in years.

Dark asked BoxeR to come cheer for him at the SSL finals he won. So I guess there's at least one.

i HIGHLY doubt this claim. especially coming from her??? and not one player on the team mentioned her large amount of devotion to the team and practically all disbanded cus of her?

dont get me started with the fucking sponsorship money she was hoarding off for different agendas. just another classic case of a crazy bitch. not rocket science and doesnt need need any overthinking beyond that.

*5 years later* "i want to excuse myself from my past behavior acting unprofessional during my time with slayers because it still important to me even though its old news".

remember guys, she cares so much about her reputation that she sued people that were taunting her online. batshit crazy and incredibly self conscience. doesnt surprise me that shes still trying to prove to everyone that shes a saint.

another note, on the korean game show The Genius Season 2, it was well known that she pushed Boxer to get on it and the other contestants were having small talk about how they were scared of her and that she was acting like she was part of the show coming in with Boxer, etc.

FUCK. JESSICA.

oh wait, thats not even her real name.

FUCK. LIM YO HWAN'S WIFE.

I'd just like to share that the one time I interacted with Jessica in person (IPL3) she scared the shit out of me. Every time I saw her she was running around screeching excitedly like a high schooler. She must be super high maintenance.

the amount of hate on jessica is unbelieveable.
boxer and her together build one of the most iconic and successful ESF team ever.

If it meant a not-so-likeable personality then so be it.
Maybe it does take a person like her to organise and manage this level of a team.

Dark only really became good when he got in SKT, also what do you mean with ESL clan?

I think he means ESF, the org that handled SC2 in korea before Kespa switched to SC2.

what? for real? personally, I think the jessica hate is ridiculous. No one is saying she's not partially responsible for some of what went down especially if she has a controlling nature (based on other comments) but some of the comments I've read make it seem like all the players were goody-two shoes or something which I doubt.

The thing is that Ryu Won never corroborated this (he decided to stay entirely away from the drama), but later evidence shows he is still good friends with MMA.

Okay, so from what I'm hearing, and what most people are generally agreeing - Jessica can be quite a high-strung high-maintenance drama queen. I won't judge whether that's done more harm than the good she has done all round.

But if that is true, what intrigues me then is how in the world she fell for Boxer and married him? I understand that Koreans do accord pro-gamers with more respect and love than most other communities in the world. But I doubt it's at the same level of real-life sportsmen like Park Ji-Sung (a footballer who married a famous TV show host in a high-profile celeb coupling). Sorry, I'm not trying to look down on Boxer here, but there does seem to be a gulf of social class between Jessica and him. Pro-gamers are not the most sociable lot, and usually come from humble backgrounds. Jessica is a modern-day aristocrat. I can imagine her family and friends raising eyebrows. Yes, it's almost like Prince William marrying Kate Middleton. Except that in Asian cultures, breaking social barriers is even tougher.

Am I missing something about Korean culture? Am I being too harsh and judgy?

Anyway, I really feel happy for Boxer! As a fellow geek, stories like this warms my heart.

Fair enough. There should be a PR on hottest BW/SC2 players. Boxer, Bisu, Zest, herO... who else?

It would be funny if Yellow was also chasing Jessica and lost out. That would make such an epic fan-fic!

The SlayerS drama is all he-said, she-said. While I'm sure tempered flared and relationships were strained, hard to verify any specific events. A lot of rumors going around and many people have agendas - best to ignore. After all, this took place 4 years ago

herO has the cute factor going for him. In the archetype of the boy band, herO would be casted as the 'Cute One' often to balance the look of the band against the 'Bad Boy' archetype. Zest might be a good cast for the 'Bad Boy'.

Saying you spend money on something doesn't necessarily tell the whole story. If you spend $500k on a team maybe you made 600k and made a net gain of 100k. Maybe you spent 500k and made 400k so your net loss is 100k.

Riot still insists that they run LCS at a loss even though it's clearly a way to get their game some exposure. Surely Jessica didn't just pour 500k down the drain. Can't imagine just flat out lost all of his 250k on Axiom either. Maybe... but hell that would suck. I know that Axiom operated at a loss but I hope they managed to get some of their money back.

Have you seen how handsome Boxer is? That would help.

Fair enough. There should be a PR on hottest BW/SC2 players. Boxer, Bisu, Zest, herO... who else?

It would be funny if Yellow was also chasing Jessica and lost out. That would make such an epic fan-fic!

herO has the cute factor going for him. In the archetype of the boy band, herO would be casted as the 'Cute One' often to balance the look of the band against the 'Bad Boy' archetype. Zest might be a good cast for the 'Bad Boy'.

I wish they still did frequent photo-shoots since the Nada's Body thread has been a bit bare of new material as of late

Yeah seriously. Best thread on TL.

You do know Nada isn't a white girl right?

Sadly, but It is highly likely that Jess literally lost $500K. Slayers received the best support, even compared to KeSPA teams of the time. All the services they got were the top of the range, including large team-house (200m^2), BBQ parties, the finest salon services for celebs at a half price, free dental care, dermatological treatment with 20% discount and high-end Express van (leased from her management company, which originally costs over $100K) as a transport.

Moreover, players got 80%(up to 90%) of the prize. Also, Jess covered taxes for`em.

Considering additional expenditures (e.g. rents, food expenses etc.), I would not be surprised if she lost more money.

Well if what you're saying is true, I think it's a bit sad... I assume the fans and the players both would've rather seen SlayerS try to be profitable so that it could last. Of course if you run your business at a loss and you don't try to run a profit, your employees will end up unemployed. Oh well...

I do actually wonder how they make money apart from occasional variety show appearances. She barely does any acting and Boxer doesn't seem to play anything. Maybe poker?

It's South Korea. They're doing mob stuff. That's how they got all the affiliations.

Is this not taboo considering South Korea's gambling laws?

What is the big deal ? People lose millions in a matter of days. She spent 500K dollars and made 2 years of the life of some kids pretty enoyable experience. In my book that's money well spent. (if theese are not your last 500k of course )
The thing that I don't understand is why is she sharing that information with everyone ? What is she trying to achieve ?

Oh, I didn't know she was that rich. That explains why she can sue whoever she wants anytime.

Man, such reveals make me contemplate how much esports is held together by generous whales, who pour money with no return, instead of investing. On the other hand, historically that's often been the case with arts and sports.
