I can just imagine the final game breaking down into a base race and absolute chaos, and one player is going to look back and think "Man, if I just did this one or two things in the final match I'd be $100,000 richer..." This will be so sick.

It'd be better if they maybe paid for players to travel to the venue and their accomodation, so that the players aren't losing anything by entering... but DAMN this will make every single match so epic, because you'd be spewing if you made the semis. Second place? Holy crap, the finals will be a real test of nerves of steel. Then I see absolutely no problem with the format - it'll be super exciting, there will be one super happy victor, and a few pissed off players... but IEM don't *have* to make tournaments, and they have the right to do it how they wish, and the players have the right to enter it or not. I'd see a problem if every tournament of the year was like this... but having one really intense competition a year? No worries. It'll be super interesting and probably flood some life back into the interests of sc2. When you think about Dota 2's "The International", it is an extremely top-heavy payout tournament - but it makes it that much more exciting. It's not to the extreme level of winner takes all, but 2nd place misses out on about $750k - granted, that's split between 5, but still more than the loser of this misses out on.

They have done a shitload for the scene and for SC2 players in general. They have stuck by the game despite it now being pretty minor compared to other games. Reading people say how they don't care about players is complete bullshit. They still have plenty of prize money to go around outside of this event and ultimately this money still goes to the players. If this helps them build their reputation and that of SC2 who the fuck are we or anyone in the scene to complain? This is a damn good thing for the scene as is the discussion it has generated. The hate here is totally misplaced. That's not even a remote possibility, that's just the usual people trying to be as negative as possible about anything that happens in the SC2 scene. Have a look how much interest this has generated already even if a fair bit is negative. It has people talking about IEM at a time when really they have been slightly forgotten. IEM has basically taken a backseat to dreamhack. They are also competing with other esports events and decided to try something different. So far it's working and i have no problem with it. It is remotely possible. More so than that to be quite frank. IEM hasn't taken a backseat to DreamHack, they operate very differently. IEM could have run an extra tournament just like this, with a $40k prize pool or something much less than a ridiculous 100k of non-circulated money, and gotten better players through invites, and had extra exposure and viewership without fucking 15 players over. Also, getting a lot of the players that bring viewers in and make you money, angry, could lead to them picking other tournaments going on at the same time or around the same time, or when they need a break, to participate in and, and picking IEM to skip becomes a lot better of an idea. Also, everyone knows that IEM hosting 1 huge winner takes all tournament isn't the end of the world. They are just angry at how IEM is exclaiming to the world that they don't care of right or wrong, and who gets fucked over. They made clear that this tournament isn't for the benefit of eSports or SC2 players.

I can understand that the players dont like it but I guess its a one time thing and it will create some extreme situations for the players coming close the top. But it also kind of says that IEM dont believe there is enough prestige in being the winner of their tournament. Its going to hurt so much for the number two, but honestly thats life and what sports are about in a way. Number 1 is what its about. As long as its a one time thing and players are obviously getting trip and expenses paid, lets see how it works out.

And with this being done, I think it's okay to change the format for one event. It's not like the other players will be screwed over, they have everything paid. They have nothing to lose, but quite a lot to win ![]()

I'm just annoyed at how this is clearly only for the benefit of ESL and not the SC2 ecosystem or SC2 pro players as a whole. I suppose we can't blame them too much when they've already hosted so many tournaments for sc2 with a decent prize split. They're doing this because It's the only way they can hit the target viewer numbers that they want for SC2.
