Blizzard could have done a better job on the game's design and on promoting and organizing SC2 as an esport, sure, but no Pay-to-Play RTS would ever have had a chance against the Free-to-Play MOBAs no matter what Blizzard did. It was a doomed endeavor from the start.

There's a difference between saying a pay RTS has a chance against f2p MOBA and saying a pay RTS is boring. It is silly to think SC2 would be nearly as popular/successful as LoL. I am sure Blizzard knows that, so it is not their goal of beating LoL or anything like that.
Right now, they need to focus on longevity. Now that is something that could be a doomed endeavour from the start.
Empirimancer is right on point. But Blizzard can fix this!!
What Blizz should focus on are aspects of SC2 that are more commercially viable than LoL. For example, SC2 is a much better and more engaging viewing experience than LoL (which may be more fun for an average/low skill player). So, if they focused more on investing in SC2 as an eSport (WCS was/is not enough - and even that has not really worked) rather than selling game copies, Blizzard would have an easier time approaching/beating Riot viewership numbers. Once that happens -> the ad and sponsorship $$ will come back -> the game will attract more attention -> the community will recover and Blizz will have a better return on investment as well. Would be a win-win-win for everyone...
(except for the LoL folks, sorry!)

king of kong moving to the 2nd best moba, fitting.

never liked him as a player way back when he was winning. absolutely hated his playstyle of just massing marines lol. wish him luck regardless

All the LoL hate is funny to me. I remember being the exact same, pro-starcraft and little else. Then I began playing and watching streams a fair bit, I realised it wasn't as bad as I thought. It was actually fun and even required a bit of skill.
So this is kinda bittersweet for me. Going to be interested to see if he can make any noise in LoL, but also sad to see him quit the game he was most prominent in.

Why are so many pros quitting for LoL? I've played both LoL and Dota2, and Dota strikes me as a superior game in every regard. What makes LoL so much more appealing? Being relatively new to ARTS/MOBA/whatever, I don't understand why an (arguably) uglier, (arguably) easier game would be preferred by so many more people. Can someone enlighten me?

More Koreans will soon follow suit, you can bet on that.
SC2 just has no growth.

Look at average LoL stream? LCS? Stream Viewers?
What more do you need? LoL is FARRRRRR bigger than DotA 2.

Not to mention the sheer popularity of LoL has woven into culture, especially in countries such as Korea.

Exactly. I am asking WHY it is bigger. It seems to be an all around shittier game from what I can tell. What does it have that apparently Dota doesn't? I feel like I'm missing something. Which is why I'm asking. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just legitimately confused.

It probably has to do with LoL's low barrier of entry and a snowballing effect. Riot got the game popular early with the f2p model and now it's being spread by word of mouth when friends play together.

It's easier to play, it has plenty of fan service in his heroes roster ( lots of hyper sexualized women ), and it was the first free dota-like game to be re-released, so people jumped on it way before dota 2 was available. And because a LoL account is quite valuable, with how much grind you have to do to get heroes, runes and money for skins, people are attached to it and keep playing it.

I think there must be something like in Runescape. I remember playing so much Runescape when I was younger, now I can´t even think of touching it, however, it was really popular and I have no regrets playing it. There is that something you know that keeps the players logging in, something that is missing in Sc2.

Lol Is bigger because china has around 2,000,000,000 people population, and in china / japan korea people prefer anime like chars. Nevertheless the numbers are not that different. So as for the active viewers in Europe / Americas compared to active users in China dota 2 is bigger % wise

Smart move that TL adding dota 2 to improve its content

:D Glad to see some of my favorite players from SC2 staying in esports even if i is another game. I hope he's doing what makes him happy.
I know he has absolutely top notch mechanics and I can't wait to see his micro in league!

Thats a terrible move, who have actually done something after they switched from sc2 to lol ?
It would make more sense to switch to dota because its actually new and fresh in korea and you can make a name for yourself while lol is so established in korea that he actually have 0% chance to make it big.

Awesome explanation. I had forgotten that people could pay for stuff and there were objectives to grind towards. The last time I played LoL, I was sitting in a common area in Syracuse University playing on their shitty wifi with some other people. Which would have been like 2010? Something like that? So... yeah. Forgot a lot about the business model since then. Thanks!
