And let's not pretend DotA is not casual - it was that map everyone played because they sucked at Warcraft. As for the news - expected. There are not a lot more money than the SC2 scene and there is little incentive for new sponsors to chime in, moving to the biggest eSport game is the smart move. Doesn't mean I won't miss him. LoL worlds barely got more viewers than the TI3 finals. (LoL was at 1.4m, I don't remember exactly what the final number for TI3 was including all sources such as Highwind, but it was over 1m). Considering the huge difference in player base, I think that pretty clearly shows that a lot of people think Dota is the better game to *watch* competitively. And if I'm a professional gamer, that's what I care about. Otherwise you'd be playing Candy Crush on Facebook if you decided based on the number of casual players.

Don't get me wrong, DotA has it's audience, but it's been three years (alright two years since anyone and their grandmother could get a key) already, if hasn't made it by now, it's very doubtful it'd make it later on. I think DotA has nearly reached it's peak and it'd start it's slow bleeding as the MOBA genre loses popularity. And I'm saying this as someone who plays DotA daily and watched tournaments (I'm actually a DotA player). That and Valve's support has been very lacking, when was the last time we got a new hero, three months ago or so? Jeez... So many awesome memories of the amazing, marine-splitting master. Too many to list.. Never was I happier with a player winning a championship then when MarineKingPrime won MLG (twice). Thank you for everything MKP, we will never forget you <3 Glhf!

In Korea, LoL is like the NFL while Dota is like major league soccer in terms of popularity and viewership and that's all that matters in this case. I guess that tells you that the Korean audience which have had an esports scene the longest have decided that LoL is the better game to watch competitively. ![]()

Playing Moba 12h/day because its fun to play doesnt mean you catch up one bit. Playing SC2 12h is nearly impossible/will make you a good player for sure because the game is hard and exhausting (so noone stands playing it 12h), but even casuals are playing Mobas 6-8h/day without getting better at all. On the other side, why blame people for trying and if you can grab a little kickstart, maybe it will work out. But I doubt it.

I think DotA has nearly reached it's peak and it'd start it's slow bleeding as the MOBA genre loses popularity. TERA is one of the most popular games in Korea. WoW wasn't even played that much until recently. With the exception of a few games (LoL and SC) Korea's market is completely different from what you see on other parts of the world. It's like that in China too. Also, I await the day we can accept that there is, and always was and alwas will be, more than one eSports. That being said, it's not helping that every company out their acts like their game is the only eSports in the world. Blizzard is an exception here as they explicitly stated that they watch LoL. But looking at Riot and their stories, and Valve, I don't see a "global eSports" thing happen anytime soon. It will always be that one game everyone plays. Until the next game comes out that people find cool. It will always be like that.
