This is embarrasing to the starcraft 2 community. At least I'd still hold lots of respect for going into a competitive game like dota 2. Don't get me wrong i respect marineking for his amazing games and effort he put into starcraft but this is just.... no. But LoL is more competitive - more fans, more money, higher quality of tournaments. And let's not pretend DotA is not casual - it was that map everyone played because they sucked at Warcraft. As for the news - expected. There are not a lot more money than the SC2 scene and there is little incentive for new sponsors to chime in, moving to the biggest eSport game is the smart move. Doesn't mean I won't miss him. LoL worlds barely got more viewers than the TI3 finals. (LoL was at 1.4m, I don't remember exactly what the final number for TI3 was including all sources such as Highwind, but it was over 1m). Considering the huge difference in player base, I think that pretty clearly shows that a lot of people think Dota is the better game to *watch* competitively. And if I'm a professional gamer, that's what I care about. Otherwise you'd be playing Candy Crush on Facebook if you decided based on the number of casual players. http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2012/10/23/league-of-legends-world-final-officially-the-most-watched-event-in-gaming-history/League of Legends World Final Officially the Most Watched Event in Gaming History: "Over 8,000 traveled from all corners of the globe to cheer on Azubu Frost and the Taipei Assassins in person More than 8,282,000 unique viewers tuned in for the World Finals via TV and stream worldwide (including 2,402,225 TV viewers in Korea and China) At peak, over 1,154,000 people were watching online alone (not counting any TV numbers) during the World Finals Over the course of both the World Playoffs and Finals, people watched 24,230,688 hours of League of Legends" did TI3 really have a number this close? That is last years Worlds. This year was probably a lot higher. According to @RiotRedBeard, there were 1 million concurrent viewers for game 1 of this year's finals, plus an estimated 1 million from China/Korea streams, and then another 4 million from TV.
This suggests (from my guesstimation) that the Asian markets for LoL are still growing substantially, though other markets may have come close to peaking.
However, one significant caveat is that Taiwan is arguably a much smaller market than China (Taipei Assassins, last year's finalist and champion, probably wouldn't attract nearly as many eyeballs in China as Royal Club did this year).

I really don't get the sc2 community.
If you've played a video game for 4 years straight you've seen it. You want to do something else. Progamers will keep coming and going especially as theye lose interest (or "passion") for the game they don't get the same results anymore. New players come in. It happened in starcraft 1 as well. There are generation of progamers, they don't all coexist at the same time.
I too liked watching MKP in his prime, but he hasn't shown a decent game in ages, most likely because he's not been practicing. He just did weird stuff and it didn't work, so he fell out of code A.

Bunch of second places in WOL, and basicly no achievements in HotS, and u guys still think that SC2 scene is falling due to this retirement? He wasn't even close to top terrans recently, so I would say, in past couple of months he was the same caliber as Dragon. Not a big deal if he left.

I was a big fan of MKP and this didn't come as a surprise considering his lack of activity this year but...going to LoL is just sad. I don't mind him retiring from SC2 but switching to that lame moba designed for 10yr olds really makes me sad.

It's still pretty surprising considering how much of a massive fan favourite he's been throughout the entire of SC2.

I wish LoL wasnt so terrible to watch so I could follow MKP from time to time. I dont think I will ever understand the attraction of LoL/dota. Atleast Dota is a bit faster than LoL but still terrible to watch.... Anyways .. GL HF MKP!

gl mkp in LoL ! still sad.

its not (only) about MKP, is about the whole situation, people lefting, wcs system, big teams with money problems,etc..
imho blizzard has to focus in investing in some huge team league instead/with of single tournaments, this should/could give new earnings to the teams directly, instead of giving them to a few bunch of players

It hurts to lose fan favourites, whats dont you get about that? And sc2 needs every "star" they can get because NOBODY is switching from other games to sc2 because sc2 is just to demanding skill wise..

Not sure about fan statistics, but I am almost sure that Flash/Innovation got more fans than MKP had in hes peak, besides, Prime already got a new young talent called Maru. And yea, I think it's pretty hard to cheer for a player who got few televised matched during last 6 months. Considering to how well MC is doing recently, I would say that MKP gave up long time ago.

I too liked watching MKP in his prime, but he hasn't shown a decent game in ages, most likely because he's not been practicing. He just did weird stuff and it didn't work, so he fell out of code A. The GSL is three years old, so technically MKP has been playing less than three years.
StarCraft fans (especially from BroodWar) are just spoiled from seeing their favorite players going strong for 6+ years. Take a look at Flash, he's been StarCrafting since 2007. Bisu? 8 years, and now back playing BroodWar again. Jaedong? 8 years and still going strong.
Regardless of his results since HotS came out, MKP is still one of the most popular and recognized players in SC2. So to see him switch games after less than three years is obviously going to be a shocker, especially to his well-established fanbase, which still held onto the thread of hope that eventually he'd finally win a major Korean championship.
