sorry for offtopic, but there are a lot of intersting thoughts in this thread regarding good rts games.
Just in general, are there any kickstarter efforts or whatever to create a very good rts game by someone who really understands all of that? Or any other game people are waiting for in this regard?
cheers

There is SC2 map editor. You can make any kind of RTS.

EDIT: make sure you're committed, otherwise you'll waste your time.

The next one may be Ret. His performance since HOTS is so bad compared to mid stages of WOL....

There is no reason to be predicting another players retirement with no evidence.

There's no interest in making other RTS games, Blizzard are the only company left propping up a dead genre. It's not even that profitable for them really, I wouldn't be surprised if Hearthstone ends up makes more money.

People are saying things like "He left SC2 because it is SO much easier to play professional LoL he just wants the MONIES etc."

Putting aside talk on the skill level the game takes, you have to realize that it is very difficult to break into the League of Legends professional scene. Look at sC, Coca, and Puzzle, who all tried in Korea and actually came back to SC2 after having no luck! Look at Destiny and Darkforce who switched a while ago and have yet to make an impact or get on a decent pro team.

So saying that he switched for the money or because he will get more viewers is silly. It's equally difficult to be notable in that scene as SC2.

Case in point, he's streaming LoL right now and has 52 viewers. He got more streaming SC2.

Day 9 is working on a free to play browser game that is going to be an RTS. If I were a betting man, I think it would bare some resemblance of the style and control of BW, being grid based having tight controls.

Wow, reading this hurts. Beastyqt was one of my favourite Terrans from back in 2011/2012 and was definitely one of the best Terran streamers to watch. I for one am really sad and will miss him greatly... <3 Beastyt

RTS is hard to monetize at the level needed for constant developer attention. It's very much a product-oriented thing instead of more service-oriented offerings like WoW or MOBAs where adding new things is easier. One reason why Blizzard charges to hold tournaments instead of having a hands-off approach or even paying TOs like most other companies do. (And just arrogance)

Also, the reasons people played multiplayer RTS have pretty much been absorbed by MOBAs. Most people played ridiculous money maps or compstomped with friends. They just like doing stuff together and doing fancy things together.
A relatively small fraction wants 1v1 versus play, and MOBAs just suit the rest a lot better. Plus it's easier to deflect blame in them than in a 1v1 game. 1v1 games by nature tend to focus on stuff like efficiency at the expense of flashy and cool things like making Battlecruisers, but people want to make Battlecruisers. With a MOBA, you level up and get cool flashy things and it is proper to get cool and flashy things.

It's a similar thing in MTG, where people tend to care more about the cards than the strategy behind playing them. Decks like Storm combo and RUG Delver (roughly analogous to a technical 1/1/1 push except that it's hella fast and a constant, harassing style intended to keep resources low.) aren't really favoured, because there the interaction between players matters a ton instead of what cool things the cards do, per se. The average player would rather cast Karn. His motivations are just fundamentally different from mine (I enjoy the huge decision trees and broken things combo decks do, and working around the defenses of "fair" decks).

There's more of them than there is of me, and that's why MTG is moving in that direction. Not much that can be done about it, except to cultivate people who like to play the way I like and keep a for-fun scene around for as long as possibile. Like the BW people are doing, like the Street Fighter 2 players are doing. Like the Smash Bros. players are doing, with jack for support from Nintendo. A good number of those scenes are actually healthy, by the way, because they exist due to the players, for the players, not due to the corporations.
In the end, we don't really need pros. The pros may make the game greater, but in the end it's not about watching others play. It's about competing with friends. We need community, friends and fun games. The sooner people understand that and play the games they like, the better.

I think a quality free to play RTS game could be extremely successful, if it was enjoyable to play casually versus friends and if it would be player friendly.

In my opinion the main problem with starcraft 2 is the price and a simple fact that most people just don't really find it fun to play at all...

I hate to break it to you, most people don't enjoy RTS games as a multiplayer game. Most people never touch the competitive aspect of any RTS game because they know how hard it will be. All my friends who know I play SC2 competitively say the same thing "But I will have to deal with people cheesing me, right?" and I have to answer yes. Most folks do not enjoy the super stressful aspect of SC2 or any RTS game. But it that stress and variety of gameplay that defines them.

I don't think using 3 koreans who ended up returning to starcraft (which shows to me that they simply prefer the game) and somebody who is a streamer as examples is very good, the darkforce point remains though. I think you interpretated people saying he switched to lol cause it's easier meaning that it's super easy to become pro and make a shit tone of money in lol. People are saying that competing vs Europeans with 4 other people playing on your team for a chance to get a really good salary is easier to accomplish than playing by yourself vs koreans in every tournament you could enter with little salary and a usually top heavy prize pool (dreamhack for star 2 for example only pays top8). Which is a fair point imho.

Good luck dude! I remember early in WOL I didn't know who you were but you came onto the scene and really surprised me with beating some really good people in tournaments.
